Idea: A New Project — Avalon Safe, a Privacy-First Document Manager
Hi Alfred,
I've been using and following your work on Scanner, and I really like the simplicity and focus of the project.
I'd like to share an idea with you that may be interesting to explore together.
I'm the creator of a new open-source iOS project called Avalon Safe.
The idea is simple:
Your private island for important documents.
Avalon Safe is not intended to be another scanning app, password manager, or cloud drive.
Its purpose is to give people one private place for the documents they really don't want to lose or expose — such as IDs, passports, certificates, contracts, property documents, vehicle documents, medical records, and other important files.
The core experience I'm aiming for is very simple:
Scan / Import → Securely Store → Find When Needed
Security is the most important part.
The design direction I'm working toward is:
Local-first storage
Each document independently encrypted
Encrypted filenames as well as file contents
No user password to manage
Secure key management using Apple's system security mechanisms such as Keychain
iCloud used primarily as encrypted backup/sync, so a lost or replaced iPhone doesn't mean losing everything
Minimal, elegant interface
No AI analysis of documents
No unnecessary features
The goal is not to build a feature-heavy "digital vault".
I want Avalon Safe to do one thing extremely well: protect and manage important documents.
Why I'm posting this here
I'm not a programmer.
What I can contribute is the product vision, positioning, information architecture, user experience, requirements, documentation, and design direction. I've spent a lot of time thinking through what Avalon Safe should and should not be.
What I'm looking for is someone who can take the technical lead and turn that product vision into a well-designed, secure, maintainable iOS application.
And that's why I'm reaching out to you specifically.
I think your experience with Scanner could make you particularly well suited to understand the kind of focused, simple experience I'm trying to create.
I'm not asking you to simply contribute a few lines of code to an existing project.
I'm wondering whether you might be interested in leading the technical development of Avalon Safe and potentially shaping the project together as an open-source project.
I would continue to take responsibility for the product direction and user experience, while you could lead the engineering side.
Of course, this is just an idea at this stage, and I completely understand if you are not interested or don't have the time.
If this sounds interesting to you, I'd be very happy to discuss the project, the product requirements, and the technical direction in more detail.
