[Document Scanner] Italian translation of "Auto capture" is misleading ("Scatto multiplo" means "Multiple shot") #1057

Description

@davidecastello

Bug

The Italian translation of the "Auto capture" toggle in ML Kit Document Scanner's camera UI is "Scatto multiplo", which translates back to English as "Multiple shot" / "Multiple snap". Italian users naturally read this as a control for capturing multiple pages, not as a control for the auto-shutter behavior on document detection.

This is especially misleading when the integrator has set setPageLimit(1) — the UI implies a multi-page action that, by configuration, cannot happen.

Library / dependency

implementation 'com.google.android.gms:play-services-mlkit-document-scanner:16.0.0'

Reproduce

  1. Add the dependency above.
  2. Configure with at least:
    val options = GmsDocumentScannerOptions.Builder()
    .setGalleryImportAllowed(false)
    .setPageLimit(1)
    .setResultFormats(GmsDocumentScannerOptions.RESULT_FORMAT_JPEG)
    .setScannerMode(GmsDocumentScannerOptions.SCANNER_MODE_BASE)
    .build()
  3. Set the device language to Italian (Impostazioni → Sistema → Lingue e immissione → Italiano).
  4. Launch the scanner with GmsDocumentScanning.getClient(options).getStartScanIntent(activity).
  5. Observe the toggle in the top-right of the camera viewfinder: in English it reads "Auto capture" and toggles between Auto / Off (controls whether the camera auto-fires when a document is detected); in Italian it reads "Scatto multiplo".

Expected behaviour

The Italian string should clearly communicate "automatic capture" — i.e. the camera will auto-fire when it recognises a document — without implying multi-page behaviour.

Suggested translation

  • Cattura automatica — direct equivalent, unambiguous.
  • Alternative: Scatto automatico — slightly more colloquial for the camera context; matches the "Scatto" naming convention but with the correct semantic (automatico = automatic, not multiplo = multiple).

Both convey the same meaning as the English string and are unambiguous to Italian native speakers.

Environment

  • ML Kit Document Scanner: 16.0.0 (latest at time of report)
  • Tested on:
    • Pixel 8 emulator (API 35, 16 KB page size) — sdk_gphone16k_arm64
    • Pixel 7 emulator (API 35, 4 KB page size) — sdk_gphone64_arm64
    • Pixel 6a physical device (Android 16, API 36, 4 KB pages) — bluejay
  • Device language: Italian (it-IT)
  • Behaviour identical across all three.
