Partial overrides can invert warning/critical Z-score ordering
Medium Severity
resolveDetectorConfig naively merges overrides onto defaults without validating cross-field invariants. Because the DTO validator (CriticalGreaterThanWarningValidator) only checks warningZScore < criticalZScore when both fields are in the same request payload, a partial PATCH like { connections: { warningZScore: 9.5 } } passes validation but produces a resolved config where warningZScore (9.5) exceeds the default criticalZScore (3.0). The spike detector then operates with an inverted threshold, likely suppressing warnings entirely or producing nonsensical severity classifications.

Fixed in settings.service.ts — updateDetectorConfig now validates the fully resolved state (defaults + stored + new delta) before persisting.

Thanks @amitkojha05 - this is a well-built feature. I checked the tricky parts: the service-layer validation correctly re-validates the fully-resolved merged state (z-score and absolute ordering) for every metric, so the partial-PATCH inversion case is genuinely covered, and the hot-reload preserves the circular buffers and detectDrops. Nice work. A few things before it merges:
1. Scope creep - drop the cache_proposals changes. sqlite.adapter.ts bundles in the pending-cache_proposals uniqueness guard (~10 lines, the same change as #198), which is unrelated to anomaly thresholds and will conflict with that PR. Please remove it and keep this PR focused on detector config.
2. Infinity → null in the API (Bugbot medium, still open). DETECTOR_DEFAULTS uses POSITIVE_INFINITY for the absolute thresholds, and GET /settings/anomaly/detectors serializes those to null - clients can't tell "no absolute threshold" from "unset," and a GET→edit→PATCH round-trip breaks. Please emit an explicit sentinel, omit the field, or document the null.
3. Rebase + sign. The branch is 155 commits behind and currently conflicting, and the commit is unsigned. Please rebase onto master (so CI gives a real green signal on the current tree) and sign the commit.
Optional: spike-detector.updateConfig re-hardcodes the DETECTOR_DEFAULTS values as its own ?? fallbacks - fine today since callers always pass a complete config, but worth a comment so it doesn't drift.
Once those are in, this should be close. Thanks!

Thanks @KIvanow — all three blockers addressed on force-push ( 1. Scope creep dropped. Removed the 2. 3. Rebased + signed. On current master, CI is now running against a real tree. Optional: added a JSDoc block on Not touched: the service-layer re-validation and the hot-reload path — you called both correct and I didn't want to churn either. |

Thanks @amitkojha05 - the earlier blockers are all sorted: the cache_proposals scope creep is gone, the Infinity → null serialization is fixed and tested, and it's signed + rebased with a real green CI run. The validation defense-in-depth (DTO first line + authoritative merged-state re-check in updateDetectorConfig) is solid.
Two things still hold this back, though:
1. Drop the dead-code fallbacks in spike-detector.ts updateConfig(). Every caller passes a fully-resolved config (toSpikeDetectorConfig(resolveDetectorConfig(...))), so the config: SpikeDetectorConfig = {} default and the ?? 2.0 / ?? 3.0 / ?? Infinity / ?? 3 / ?? 60000 fallbacks are unreachable, and they silently duplicate DETECTOR_DEFAULTS. That's a second source of truth that will drift the moment someone tunes a default in one place and not the other - I don't want to carry that.
Please make the config non-optional and assign the resolved fields directly, e.g.:
updateConfig(config: SpikeDetectorConfig): void {
this.config = {
...config,
detectDrops: config.detectDrops ?? this.config.detectDrops,
};
}(keep the detectDrops preservation - that part is legitimate.) If you genuinely want a defensive default for a partial config, spread it from a single shared default object rather than re-typing the literals - but given the call sites, I'd rather just require the complete config and delete the fallbacks entirely.
2. Add the missing absolute-inversion test. The service correctly rejects a partial PATCH that inverts warningAbsolute/criticalAbsolute against stored config (settings.service.ts:157-162), but nothing exercises that path - the only absolute cross-field test is the same-payload DTO case, while the z-score side has the partial-vs-stored test. Please add the symmetric one: store { acl_denied: { criticalAbsolute: 50 } }, PATCH { acl_denied: { warningAbsolute: 100 } }, expect a 400. That's the branch most likely to regress silently.
Neither is large. Once the fallbacks are gone and that test is in, this is an approve.

Thanks for pushing on this, @amitkojha05. Good progress since last round: the absolute-inversion test is in (settings-anomaly-detectors.spec.ts stores { acl_denied: { criticalAbsolute: 50 } }, PATCHes { warningAbsolute: 100 }, expects a 400 — exactly the symmetric case I asked for), and the commits are signed now (verified=true). But the branch can't merge as-is — two blockers:
1. The updateConfig() change doesn't compile — api-tests is red. This is the requested cleanup, but as written it fails typecheck at spike-detector.ts:186:
proprietary/anomaly-detection/spike-detector.ts(186,5): error TS2322:
Type '{ detectDrops: boolean; warningZScore?: number; criticalZScore?: number; ... }'
is not assignable to type 'Required<SpikeDetectorConfig>'.
The internal field is private config: Required<SpikeDetectorConfig> (all fields non-optional), but updateConfig(config: SpikeDetectorConfig) takes the optional variant, so this.config = { ...config, ... } spreads number | undefined fields into a Required<> target. My suggested snippet used SpikeDetectorConfig for the param — my mistake — but the fix is to make the whole chain non-optional rather than re-add the ?? fallbacks. toSpikeDetectorConfig() already resolves every field, so have it return Required<SpikeDetectorConfig> and type the param to match:
// anomaly.types.ts
export function toSpikeDetectorConfig(config: Required<DetectorConfig>): Required<SpikeDetectorConfig> { ... }
// spike-detector.ts
updateConfig(config: Required<SpikeDetectorConfig>): void {
this.config = { ...config, detectDrops: config.detectDrops ?? this.config.detectDrops };
}That keeps a single source of truth (no duplicated defaults) and compiles. Right now this breaks the build: anomaly.service.spec.ts and the pre-existing spike-detector.spec.ts both fail to run (Test Suites: 2 failed), so api-tests never goes green. I reproduced it locally with tsc --noEmit -p apps/api/tsconfig.json.
2. The branch conflicts with master again. mergeable: CONFLICTING / DIRTY, and this time it came in as a merge commit (211afc84) rather than a rebase. Please rebase onto current master and resolve — same reason as last time: I want CI green on the actual merge result, not a stale tree. (The CLAAssistant check is also failing — looks like the CLA needs signing.)
Item 1 is a small, mechanical fix. Once it compiles, api-tests is green, and the branch is rebased cleanly, this is an approve — the feature itself is in good shape.

Thanks @KIvanow — CI blocker fixed : |
|
Thanks @amitkojha05 - persistence and validation both hold up, and I re-checked the merged-state re-validation, it's correct. One blocker before this merges. A saved threshold change never reaches the running detectors. When an operator PATCHes a new threshold, the live The cause is DI scoping, not the code in this PR. In @Optional() @Inject(ANOMALY_SERVICE) private readonly anomalyService?: IAnomalyService,
// ...
this.anomalyService?.reloadDetectorConfig(result);
So I reproduced it in a standalone Nest application context with the same module layout (a global CI stays green because the unit test hand-provides a mock Fix, any one of:
Please also add a test that pulls Lower priority: even once wired, a PATCH in a multi-replica deploy only updates the replica that served it. The others keep the old thresholds until their next start. Worth a line in the docs. |

@KIvanow thanks for tracking down the DI issue — you were right, the controller never got the service. I went with your option 3: AnomalyModule is proprietary and loaded dynamically, so SettingsModule can't import it and @optional would still hide a miss. SettingsService now exposes onDetectorConfigChange(); AnomalyService subscribes in onModuleInit and unsubscribes on destroy, and the controller no longer touches ANOMALY_SERVICE. If the proprietary module isn't loaded, nothing subscribes, which is the correct no-op. Test for the hole: anomaly.service.spec now drives a real SettingsService. A PATCH through updateDetectorConfig changes the live SpikeDetector's thresholds without resetting its buffer, reset restores defaults, and after destroy updates no longer reach it. It fails if the subscription line is removed (expected 2.7, received 2). Also in this push:
I've also updated the PR description to match the current design. All checks are green. |

Re-checked against @KIvanow's reviews: all items are addressed (scope creep dropped, Infinity→null, Required<> chain, inversion test, DI inverted via onDetectorConfigChange, multi-replica limitation documented). The outdated Cursor thread on anomaly.types.ts is fixed by the merged-state re-validation and can be resolved. Two issues introduced by moving the config into AppSettings:
apps/api/src/settings/settings.controller.ts:46:PUT /settingsnow acceptsanomalyDetectorConfigwith no validation (SettingsUpdateRequestis an interface, soValidationPipedoes nothing), no lock and no notification. E.g.{anomalyDetectorConfig:{connections:{warningZScore:9,criticalZScore:1}}}persists inverted bands that apply on next restart and make subsequent PATCHes fail the merged-state check. The whole-row read-merge-write in sqlite/postgresupdateSettingscan also overwrite a concurrent PATCH. Suggest stripping/rejecting the field inupdateSettingsunless it comes fromapplyDetectorConfigUpdate.apps/api/src/settings/settings.service.ts: Follow-ups, non-blocking: (a) no way to clear a single override or disable an absolute threshold (null rejected, Infinity not expressible in JSON), only the all-metrics reset; (b) the three endpoints have noFeature.ANOMALY_DETECTIONgate, so on tiers/builds without the module PATCH returns 200 and persists but nothing listens; (c) no sqlite/postgres round-trip test foranomaly_detector_config, which is where the INSERT column-count bug lived.

Thanks, all prior points are addressed: reset keeps the overrides under the shared lock, PUT rejects anomalyDetectorConfig, every write path uses withSettingsWriteLock, single-metric DELETE, LicenseGuard on the detector endpoints, and a round-trip spec. One blocking bug in the new "0 disables" path:

Disabled thresholds now survive the SQL JSON round-trip (null → Infinity on read, Number.isFinite in the sanitizers), with sqlite and postgres coverage. LGTM.

@KIvanow your Aug 21 blocker (detector config never reaching live detectors) was fixed earlier by inverting the dependency, and @jamby77 amby has since approved. For a quick re-review, here's where each of your points landed:

The dependency inversion fixed my earlier blocker. I merged master in and checked the rest: 1835 unit tests pass and the Postgres round-trip e2e passes against real Postgres. Validation rejects NaN, Infinity, negatives, unknown keys and inversions, persisted config loads before AnomalyService.onModuleInit, and hot reload reaches every connection including the lazily created slowlog detector. One validation hole left.
1. Explicit null gets past validation and goes live (update-anomaly-detectors.dto.ts:54 and the other @IsOptional fields, settings.controller.ts:152 / :160)
@IsOptional() skips every validator when the value is null (I checked with the real ValidationPipe). So {"connections":{"warningZScore":null,"cooldownMs":null,"consecutiveRequired":null}} passes, stripUndefined copies the nulls because it only checks !== undefined, and the merged-state check at settings.service.ts:281 doesn't catch it because null >= 3 is false. The nulls are persisted and pushed to live detectors. In SpikeDetector.detect, absZScore >= null and count >= null are always true and ts - last < null is always false, so every poll with a positive z-score fires a WARNING with no cooldown. It survives a restart, since normalizeDetectorConfigMap only repairs the absolute fields. Separately, {"connections": null} makes stripUndefined(null) throw and the request returns 500.
Fix: @ValidateIf((_, v) => v !== undefined) instead of @IsOptional() on both the per-metric objects and the numeric fields, so null gets a 400. Defensively, stripUndefined should skip null and resolveDetectorConfig should fall back to defaults for any non-finite z-score, count or cooldown. Please add tests for null at both levels.
2. Multi-replica has a cheap fix (settings.service.ts:102-111)
The docs note covers this, but GET reads the settings cache, which refreshCache updates every 30s. So other replicas report the new resolved values while their detectors still run the old ones. Comparing anomalyDetectorConfig with the cached one in refreshCache and calling notifyDetectorConfigChange(normalizeDetectorConfigMap(...)) when it differs would make them consistent and remove the caveat. Not blocking.
3. detectDrops is never preserved (spike-detector.ts:184, anomaly.types.ts:163)
toSpikeDetectorConfig always sets detectDrops: false, so the ?? this.config.detectDrops fallback never runs. None of the configurable metrics use drops today, but if one does later, a hot reload will turn them off. Keep this.config.detectDrops in updateConfig or leave the field out of toSpikeDetectorConfig.
4. Empty updates still count and notify (settings.controller.ts:105/126/137)
PATCH {} or a DELETE for a metric with no override still increments betterdb_detector_config_updates_total and notifies listeners, and {connections:{}} stores an empty override. Skip all three when nothing changed.
5. 0 means disabled, but @Min(0) suggests it's a valid threshold
It's documented, but the Swagger text reads as if 0 is allowed. Reword it, or use an explicit sentinel once 1 is fixed.
6. SettingsUpdateRequest still includes anomalyDetectorConfig (packages/shared/src/types/settings.types.ts:70)
PUT now rejects it with 400, so it should be Omitted. The {defaults, overrides, resolved} response shape isn't in @betterdb/shared either, which a future UI will need.
…ettings/anomaly/detectors
… e2e fixture and schema

Re-checked 7c17097..8f8279b against KIvanow's 2026-10-19 review: all six points look fixed (null rejection at both levels, replica sync only on change, detectDrops preserved, no-op PATCH/DELETE/reset skip the write and the counter, Swagger wording, shared types). PUT rejection, reset preservation, the single write lock and the Infinity↔null round-trip on SQLite/Postgres all check out. One low-severity hardening point:

All six points from my last review are fixed in 8f8279b. null gets a 400 at both levels, refreshCache syncs other replicas under the write lock, updateConfig keeps detectDrops, empty updates skip the metric and the notification, the Swagger text for 0 is reworded, and SettingsUpdateRequest omits the config with the response types now in @betterdb/shared. CI is green. Approving; the notes below can be follow-ups.
1. Absolute thresholds on lifetime counters (anomaly.service.ts:602-605)
evicted_keys, keyspace_misses, acl_denied and slowlog_last_id are fed raw INFO totals, and SpikeDetector.detect checks currentValue >= criticalThreshold. PATCH {"evicted_keys":{"criticalAbsolute":1000}} on a server that has evicted 1000 keys since start fires CRITICAL every cooldown until Valkey restarts. The acl_denied 10/50 defaults already behave this way, but the API makes it easy to set on any counter. Document which metrics are cumulative in docs/anomaly-detection.md, or reject absolute fields on those four.
2. An unknown stored metric key turns every write into a 500 (anomaly.types.ts:54-71, :159-161)
normalizeDetectorConfigMap keeps any key, and resolveDetectorConfig then reads DETECTOR_DEFAULTS[metric][f] for it and throws. After a metric rename, a downgrade or a hand-edited row, every PATCH and DELETE returns 500 until someone calls /reset. Drop keys that aren't in MetricType during normalization.
3. PATCH validates every stored metric, startup validates none (settings.service.ts:310-332)
If a later release changes a default so a stored partial override becomes inverted, a PATCH on an unrelated metric returns 400 naming the other one, and the same inverted config goes live at boot unchecked. Validate only the metrics in the request, and log and skip invalid ones on load.
Smaller
- Thresholds are global across connections. That's fine, but the docs should say so.
cacheGenerationis mostly redundant now that the refresh runs under the write lock.
