Summary

Adds CachedChatModel, a BaseChatModel wrapper for LangChain that caches at the model level instead of through LangChain's BaseCache, so bound tool schemas (.bindTools(...)), tool_choice, and the wrapped model's sampling parameters are all included in the cache key. This closes the tool-schema-drift limitation documented under [0.7.0] in this package's changelog:

LangChain's BaseCache interface exposes only (prompt, llm_string), so tool definitions are structurally unreachable.

BetterDBLlmCache is unchanged, so existing cache keys remain fully compatible. CachedChatModel is a new opt-in export for applications that bind tools.

Changes

src/adapters/langchain.ts

  • Adds CachedChatModel, CachedChatModelOptions, CachedChatModelCallOptions.
  • Adds helpers: convertMessage, convertTools, tokensOf, textOfContent, buildToolCallBlocks, rebuildGeneration.
  • Overrides _generate() and _streamResponseChunks() so both .invoke() and .stream() participate in cache lookup and storage.
  • Bypasses the cache (read and write, in both methods) when any bound tool cannot be converted, so the key never represents fewer tools than the model receives.

src/adapters/__tests__/langchain.test.ts: 22 tests covering:

  • cache hit with identical tools; cache miss when bound tools differ
  • no-tools behavior matching BetterDBLlmCache
  • tool-call round-trip through storeMultipart
  • token extraction from usage_metadata
  • tool-schema drift regression (different Zod schemas produce different keys)
  • tool_choice and sampling params (temperature, max_tokens, etc.) participate in the key
  • streaming miss passes chunks through while storing the aggregate; streaming hit replays without invoking the model
  • array-content streaming chunks forward their text to handleLLMNewToken and ChatGenerationChunk.text
  • bypass when a bound tool is unconvertible: the model is invoked and check, store, and storeMultipart are never called
  • fail-open on cache read and write errors

README.md: new "Tool-schema-aware caching (CachedChatModel)" section. Known limitations updated: CachedChatModel is the recommended path for tool-aware caching; BetterDBLlmCache retains the BaseCache limitation by design; three CachedChatModel-specific limitations documented (no token usage on cache hits, unconvertible tools skip caching, callback traces appear as separate root runs).

CHANGELOG.md: [Unreleased] entry.

examples/langchain/index.ts: new askWithTools example: same prompt, different bound tool sets, second set is a cache miss.

package.json: adds "zod": "^4.3.6" as a devDependency (matches the range already used by other workspace packages, so the lockfile has a single zod major). Used only by the schema-drift regression tests; no runtime or peer dependency changes.

Implementation notes for reviewers

bindTools. BaseChatModel.bindTools() has no default implementation, and @langchain/core@^1.1.35 no longer has Runnable.bind() (superseded by withConfig()). CachedChatModel.bindTools() uses this.withConfig({ tools, ...kwargs }), the same approach ChatOpenAI.bindTools() uses internally. It returns a new runnable and does not mutate the instance.

Tool schema normalization. Schemas go through LangChain's convertToOpenAITool() before contributing to the key. Raw Zod schemas don't serialize deterministically with JSON.stringify() (in Zod v3, object shapes are lazy functions under _def.shape, so structurally different schemas could hash identically). convertToOpenAITool() produces canonical JSON Schema, leaves already-OpenAI-formatted tools unchanged, and $schema is stripped before hashing so a Zod v3 to v4 upgrade does not invalidate cache entries.

Unconvertible tools. Calls bypass the cache when any bound tool fails convertToOpenAITool, so the key always reflects the tools the model receives. Without this, a tools-bound call could replay a response cached for the same messages without tools.

Streaming. _streamResponseChunks() is overridden because the default falls back to _generate(), which would silently turn .stream() into a single response. On a miss, upstream chunks pass through unchanged and the aggregate is stored on completion. Text is extracted with textOfContent(), so providers that emit array-of-blocks content (e.g. Anthropic) are handled. On a hit, the cached output replays as a single chunk, matching wrapStream in the Vercel AI SDK adapter (#262).

Cache-key inputs beyond messages and tools. Call options (tool_choice) and wrapped-model parameters from invocationParams() (temperature, top_p, max_tokens, seed, stop). Requests that differ only in sampling parameters do not share entries, consistent with the openai-chat, anthropic, and ai adapters.

@KIvanow ready for review whenever you have a moment.

Two things not covered in the description:

  • .github/workflows/api-tests.yml doesn't actually run packages/agent-cache's tsc/vitest (same gap as chore(agent-cache): release v0.11.0 (streaming cache) + fix TS build #306) — I've run both locally and they're clean on this branch. Happy to add a workflow job for this in a separate PR if useful.
  • The new zod devDep is test-only (regression test for the schema-drift fix), not a runtime/peer dep.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an opt-in LangChain CachedChatModel that keys chat responses using normalized messages, tools, and model parameters. It caches text and tool-call responses, supports streaming, and leaves existing BetterDBLlmCache keying unchanged.

Changes: LangChain chat caching

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize cache-key inputs
packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/langchain.ts, packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/__tests__/langchain.test.ts, packages/agent-cache/package.json
Adds helpers to normalize message content and tool schemas and build cache parameters. Tests cover key inputs. Adds the zod development dependency.
Cache invocations and responses
packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/langchain.ts, packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/__tests__/langchain.test.ts
Adds cache lookup, fail-open invocation and persistence, tool binding, and reconstruction of text and tool-call responses. Tests cover cache hits, tool handling, usage metadata, and unconvertible tools.
Cache streaming responses
packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/langchain.ts, packages/agent-cache/src/adapters/__tests__/langchain.test.ts

CachedChatModel is opt-in and leaves the existing BetterDBLlmCache keying unchanged. Cache failures fall through to inference, and a bound tool that cannot be converted bypasses the cache. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

@KIvanow @jamby77 rebased on current master and force-pushed. The earlier conflicts in package.json and pnpm-lock.yaml are resolved and the branch is mergeable.

What changed since the first push:

  • zod devDependency is now ^4.3.6 to match the other workspace packages (was ^3.25.0), so the lockfile has a single zod major. PR description updated.
  • The CI gap I mentioned earlier no longer applies: package (agent-cache) now runs on this PR, so I've dropped the follow-up workflow offer.

Scope is unchanged: BetterDBLlmCache and existing cache keys are untouched, CachedChatModel is a separate opt-in export, and zod is test-only. Happy to adjust anything on review.

@KIvanow @jamby77 pushed 49f8217 addressing both CodeRabbit findings:

  • Unconvertible tools: calls now bypass the cache (read and write, in both _generate and _streamResponseChunks) when any bound tool fails convertToOpenAITool, so the key never represents fewer tools than the model receives.
  • Array-content streaming: the stream path uses a shared textOfContent(), so providers that emit content blocks (e.g. Anthropic) forward text to handleLLMNewToken.

Regression tests added for both (22 in langchain.test.ts, 293 across the package). README limitations and the PR description are updated. All checks green; ready for review.
