fix(gamescope): direct-touch drags work again in games that confine a hidden cursor - #2220
In Direct touch, dragging stopped working in games that draw their own cursor (Balatro, Stardew Valley). A drag moves the pointer but never holds a button down; taps still click.
Since #2053, patch 0128 makes gamescope switch to relative mouse for any game that hides the cursor and confines the pointer, not only for games that lock it. Those cursor games confine the pointer to their window, so gamescope took the host pointer lock. DroidDeck then treats every direct-touch swipe as camera motion.
Repro on a RedMagic Astra 2: a guest X11 window with a blank cursor that confines the pointer to itself. A tap gives press and release. A swipe gives 94 MotionNotify events with state 0x0 and no ButtonPress.
Fix
New gamescope patch 0133-confined-pointer-relative-when-held:
Goes relative: a confine (not a lock) switches to relative mouse only while the game actually holds the X pointer, i.e. stays more than 48 px from gamescope's pointer on 3 moving frames within 500 ms, as games that recentre or clip the pointer do.
Goes back: after 60 moving frames where the pointer follows again, when the confine ends, or when the cursor shows.
Unchanged: locks, the 0131 follow rule, forced relative mode and the per-game Off switch.
The app needs no change: its "a pointer lock means camera" rule is right again once gamescope only locks for real holds.
Tests
test_gamescope_confined_pointer_hold.py compiles the rule straight from the patch and checks that:
a confined pointer that follows never goes relative;
a held pointer goes relative after 3 frames and is released when it follows again or the confine ends;
locks are unaffected.
All gamescope patch tests and the direct-touch app tests pass.
Device checks with the CI-built gamescope to follow on this PR.
Relative mouse mode now better reflects whether a game holds the pointer. Hinted constraints start in relative mode; other constraints enter it when the pointer follows less than a quarter of sent movement on three frames within half a second. Hinted constraints leave relative mode after 30 frames of pointer movement following sent motion.
Tests
Added coverage for pointer-hold detection, movement, timing, and constraint release.
Documentation
Updated patch notes to describe the behavior and its tests.
Patch 0133 adds pointer-hold tracking to Gamescope and uses the detected state to select relative-mouse mode. It also updates patch documentation and adds tests for hold detection, release behavior, and mode selection.
Tracks constrained-pointer movement against cursor movement and accumulated sent-motion deltas. Three qualifying frames within 500 ms mark the pointer held; 30 qualifying frames without a large mismatch release it.

Explanation
[#2199] Requirement: touch-drag must work in games such as Balatro. The issue gives no further acceptance criteria. At head, tools/gamescope/patches/0133-constraint-relative-when-held.patch changes the relative-mouse gate in src/steamcompmgr.cpp. Relative mode now requires bGameHoldsPointer = bHasPointerConstraint && s_bPointerHeld, not any pointer constraint. update_pointer_hold compares seat cursor motion with root pointer motion from QueryRootPosition. A miss above 75% of seat motion (seat motion at least 4 px) on 3 moving frames within 500 ms marks the pointer held. A following pointer stays absolute, which keeps direct-touch button state. Held state clears after 30 free moving frames or when the constraint ends. A constraint with a hint starts held and clears after 30 following frames. tools/tests/test_gamescope_pointer_hold.py (read at head) compiles the rule from the patch when a C++ compiler exists. It asserts following, held, recentring, clipped, spaced, hinted, chained and released cases. The latest commit (79240a8) changes hint handling for a hint that arrives after tracking starts. The head patch shows that change. The incremental patch diff was unavailable, so I read the full head patch file. I did not execute the test. On-device behavior in Balatro is not verified. Device checks are manual and not coding requirements. The PR description is stale. It names 0133-confined-pointer-relative-when-held and test_gamescope_confined_pointer_hold.py, and it describes a 48 px threshold and confine-only gating. Those names and that logic do not exist at head.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#2199] Changes at head are limited to the gamescope relative-mouse path. They are: patch 0133 (PointerHold, pointer_hold_step, update_pointer_hold, and the relative-mode gate in steamcompmgr.cpp), the flSentDX/flSentDY accumulation in wlserver.cpp and wlserver.hpp (used only by update_pointer_hold), the regression test tools/tests/test_gamescope_pointer_hold.py, and tools/gamescope/PATCHES.md (per the AI summary; not read directly). The gate keeps the forced-relative, s_bFollowClientPointer and nRelativeMouse == 2 terms. The test asserts that the only removed line is the constraint term. No unrelated change is evident. Behavior point: the gate does not separate confines from locks. Unhinted locks now switch to relative mouse only after hold detection, about 3 moving frames. The PR description says locks are unchanged, which is not accurate. The change is on the same gate and serves the same fix, so it is not an unrelated change. The PR description should state this behavior and name the files that exist at head.

Patch 0128 made every hidden-cursor confine relative. Games that hide the
system cursor, draw their own and confine the pointer to their window then
took the host lock, and a direct touch drag became camera motion with no
button held, so cards and items could not be dragged.
A confine now goes relative once the X pointer stays away from the seat
position while input moves, as when a game recentres it or clips it to a
small rectangle, and returns to absolute when the pointer follows again or
the confine ends. Locks and the warp follow rule are unchanged.
…e holds the X pointer
Xwayland turns a hidden-cursor grab into a lock with no cursor position hint, so the confine-only rule never applied to games that draw their own cursor (Stardew Valley, Balatro). A hinted constraint is relative at once, as upstream. An unhinted lock or confine goes relative once the X pointer stops following the seat's motion, which a recentring or clipping game does and a drawn-cursor game does not.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Away count survives intervening free frames, so the hold can trigger on sparse noise.
Free frames do not reset nAwayFrames. Only a gap over 500 ms between away frames resets it. When bHeld is false, a "free" frame takes no branch, so the counter stays unchanged.
A game can follow the seat for most frames and still have three isolated away frames inside any 500 ms window. For example, a brief pointer clip at a screen edge can cause these. Then bHeld becomes true. The game gets relative mode, and direct-touch drags turn into camera motion again. This is the regression the patch aims to fix.
The documentation says "three frames within half a second". It does not say "any three frames, even if separated by free frames".
Decide if this is intended. If not, reset nAwayFrames on free frames while bHeld is false.
Proposed fix
- else if ( state.bHeld && ++state.nFreeFrames >= 60 )- {- state = PointerHold{};- }+ else if ( state.bHeld )+ {+ if ( ++state.nFreeFrames >= 60 )+ state = PointerHold{};+ }+ else+ {+ state.nAwayFrames = 0;+ }
If you want to keep the current behavior, confirm that "consecutive" is not required. Then update tools/gamescope/PATCHES.md to match the code.

… the X pointer
Stardew Valley's grab with a hidden cursor becomes an Xwayland lock with a cursor position hint, which upstream made relative at once. Without relative mode that lock still follows gamescope's relative motion and touches still place the pointer, so the hold rule now decides for every constraint, hinted or not.
…ointer follows
Releasing a hinted lock only through the hold rule let a recentring game's first touch swipe press the button. A hinted lock now starts relative as upstream and is released after 30 moving frames on which the X pointer follows the motion gamescope sends, counted from the relative motion while the seat is locked.

Clear the hold when tracking is disabled outside vblank.
If the cursor shows and hides between vblanks, the selector can reuse the previous hold. Off mode has the same problem if it is turned off and back on between vblanks. A following pointer can then enter relative mode, causing touch drags to act as camera motion until the hold clears.

Reset hold tracking when the focused constraint changes.
If focus moves between eligible constrained windows before a reset vblank, the new window can inherit the held state and enter relative mode immediately. This can break direct-touch drags until enough following movements release the state. A cursor comparison alone is not sufficient because windows can share a cursor.
Track the focused window and constraint identity. Reinitialize the hold state and movement baseline when either changes, while preserving the current hint behavior.
