fix(input): restore the rest of what #1439 removed, and keep the editor on the bottom screen - #2242
Follow-up to #2238. An audit of the five #1439 regression reports against current main found these still broken or only partly restored, plus three bugs #1439 introduced. Each item was checked against the code before #1439 (22a675a66^).
Elements now have an "always shown" flag. The screen-key migration sets it, and a one-time VERSION 13 step sets it on keys earlier builds already merged.
When the gamepad is hidden, only the flagged keys stay. They also stay in Steam + QAM mode and are left out of the unfolded strip.
Labels on keyed D-pads and sticks. A D-pad or stick bound to keys (e.g. WASD) draws each key's name again when Show label is on. The row is offered for every D-pad and stick.
Unfolded strip with a Deck pad: the Gamepad, Grips, Left, Right and Both tabs and the right trackpad are back. Other pads keep the two-stick strip.
The layout editor jumped off the bottom screen (reported on an AYN Thor): it opened on the bottom screen, then snapped away and came back at random.
Cause: the editor was a second bottom-screen window under the panel. Any stray window event on that display made DroidDeck yield the bottom screen and then reopen the panel on top of the editor. Leaving and returning to the app did the same.
Fix: while the editor or the bottom Input settings window is open, the panel keeps its mode but doesn't open a new window over it. It comes back when the editor closes.
The bottom-screen watcher ignores another app's window event that is older than DroidDeck's newest window on that display. A real app opened on the bottom screen still makes DroidDeck yield.
The editor picks its display again only when a display is added or removed, not on a refresh-rate change, and it doesn't open on a bottom screen another app holds.
The Profile controls panel had no bar: there was no Close, Menu or Steam on the bottom screen, and no way to swap back from the top. It now uses the same bar, with Swap.
Cleanup
Removed controller settings and a drawer field that nothing calls.
Removed setGamepadSurface and the deck_surface_switch string from all locales, both unused now.
Not changed
Per-resolution layouts (layout.WxH) are still selectable saved layouts and are not switched automatically, because the editor would then edit a different layout from the one on screen. This only matters where the main display changes size, such as a Fold's inner and outer screens.
Testing
Unit tests: the full suite passes. New tests cover:
the always-shown keys and both migrations;
D-pad and stick labels;
the Deck strip;
the bottom-screen watcher with stale and fresh window events;
the editor's display choice;
the panel waiting under the editor;
the Profile controls bar;
the snap setting.
Device (Retroid Pocket Duo):
Close in the docked menu closes the bottom panel, and the Duo's own bottom home takes over.
Profile controls shows the bar on the bottom screen, and Swap works to the top and back.
With the editor open on the bottom screen, another app opened there and closed a second later left the editor in place, 3 s and 25 s later. Before, this is what made it jump away.
A real app opened on the bottom screen still takes it over, and the panel comes back when that app closes.
Unticking Snap is still unticked after Done and reopening.
…idden
Screen keys used to be shown on their own, whatever the gamepad did. Since
they were merged into the gamepad layout they disappeared with a controller
connected, in desktop sessions, with on-screen controls set to Never, in
Steam + QAM mode and in Steam's touch mode.
Elements now carry an always-shown flag. The screen key migration sets it on
imported keys (and once on keys merged by earlier builds), and the on-screen
controls keep flagged elements drawn while the rest of the pad is hidden,
in buttons-only mode and with the quick toggle, without duplicating them in
the unfolded strip.
The bottom panel was recreated above an open input editor or input
settings window whenever it closed and reopened (session stop/start, or
the bottom screen briefly reported as taken), hiding the editor. The panel
now waits while one of our input windows holds its display and reopens
when the last one closes.
An app arrival recorded before one of our windows covered the bottom
screen no longer marks the screen taken, the editor picks its display only
when a display is added or removed, and it skips a bottom screen another
app holds.
Screen key D-pads and sticks used to show each direction's key (W, A, S, D)
when labels were on. The unified renderer drew no direction labels and only
offered Show label for buttons and gamepad sticks, so imported labels did
nothing.
D-pads and sticks bound to directional keys now draw each bound key's name
at its direction through the shared key-label helper, and Show label is
offered for every D-pad and stick.
…strip
With Deck controls, the unfolded strip used to offer the Gamepad, Grips,
Left, Right and Both tabs and put a trackpad in the right stick slot. The
unified strip only showed the gamepad with two sticks.
For Deck pads the strip bar now carries the shared Deck panel tabs and
title, the other tabs show the same stock Deck panel layouts as the second
screen, and the docked gamepad takes its stick or trackpad per side from the
Deck gamepad layout. Other pads keep the plain two-stick strip.
…layout
The Deck controls Gamepad tab used to let each side switch between a stick
and a trackpad. That choice is now part of the editable Deck gamepad
layout, but the saved choice was never moved over and its setter was left
without callers.
The library upgrade now applies a saved non-default choice to the Deck
gamepad layout once, only while that layout is still the stock one, and the
unused setter is removed.
Unfolded Deck controls can show panel tabs and display the selected panel in a dedicated view.
Pin selected on-screen controls so they remain visible when regular controls are hidden.
Deck layouts can use configured trackpad and stick surfaces, with directional key labels on supported controls.
Improvements
Custom second-screen controls retain their session bar and swap action.
The input editor avoids displays already in use, and second-screen controls wait until the editor closes.
The editor’s snap setting follows your saved preference.
Bug Fixes
Bottom-screen app detection now accounts for when windows appear, improving which app is shown.
This change adds pinned on-screen controls and unfolded Deck panel selection. It updates Deck layout migration and docking, coordinates input-editor windows with second-screen presentation, and adds mapped direction labels and saved snap settings. Tests cover these behaviors. Translated stick/trackpad switch strings were removed.

Input elements gain an alwaysShown flag. Library upgrades pin migrated screen keys and apply saved surface choices to an unchanged built-in Deck gamepad layout. Tests cover migration and upgrade behavior.
Docked and pinned control rendering app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/input/OnScreenLayout.kt, LegacyGamepadLayout.kt, OnScreenControls.kt, app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/SessionActivity.kt, app/src/test/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/input/*
Dock placement accepts selected left and right controls. Pinned elements remain rendered in buttons-only, quick-hidden, and pinned-only modes. Session control visibility uses pinned-only mode when regular controls are hidden.
Unfolded Deck panels and controls bar app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/SessionActivity.kt, app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/ui/SecondScreenPresentation.kt, SessionOverlay.kt, app/src/main/res/values*/strings.xml, app/src/test/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/ui/SecondScreenBarTest.kt, SessionSecondScreenTest.kt
Unfolded panels use cached layouts and panel tabs. Non-gamepad panels render through an input surface. Custom controls share the session bar’s swap action. Translated stick/trackpad switch strings were removed.
Input-editor display candidates exclude occupied displays. SessionActivity tracks input windows and defers second-screen presentation while a target display hosts an editor. Bottom-screen arrival tracking uses event timestamps.
Input-editor settings and direction labels app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/input/ControllerPrefs.kt, InputSurfaceSource.kt, app/src/main/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/ui/InputElementProperties.kt, InputSurfaceDialog.kt, InputSurfaceView.kt, app/src/test/java/com/droiddeck/launcher/ui/InputSettingsTest.kt, InputSurfaceViewTest.kt
The editor reads and saves its snap setting. Stick and D-pad label options apply to directional actions. Input surfaces render labels from mapped directional keys.
Droid-Deck/DroidDeck#2084: Both changes update the second-screen bar and DrawerActions close behavior.
Droid-Deck/DroidDeck#1439: This PR restores Deck controls and editor behaviors that interact with APIs changed in #1439.
Droid-Deck/DroidDeck#1979: Both changes modify bottom-screen window tracking and second-screen restoration behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8ae1b
Some renamed keys can disappear when controls hide, and uncommon window events can interfere with the bottom panel. Label controls also have edge cases. These risks are bounded but merit owner awareness.

Offer Show label for diagonal-only sticks.
A valid stick action can set all four cardinal codes to zero and assign diagonal codes. InputSurfaceView draws those diagonal labels, but this condition hides Show label. Include nonzero diagonal codes in the eligibility check for sticks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use the draft action to control Show label.
If a user changes a custom stick or D-pad from a native action to directional keys, this call still passes the saved current action. Show label stays unavailable until the user saves and reopens the editor. Pass InputActionEditor’s draft action to the properties UI so the control updates during the edit. The surface-dialog caller needs the same change. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
