Description

Overview

Implement comprehensive file path pattern matching and classification for the StringyMcStringFace binary analyzer. This feature will enable automatic detection and tagging of file system paths across different operating systems and Windows registry paths.

Background

The classification system (documented in docs/src/classification.md) defines patterns for file paths but lacks the actual implementation in src/classification/mod.rs. This feature is critical for malware analysis, as file paths often indicate:

  • Persistence mechanisms (startup folders, system directories)
  • Data exfiltration targets
  • Configuration file locations
  • Temporary file usage patterns

Technical Requirements

1. POSIX File Path Detection

Pattern: /[^\0\n\r]*

Characteristics:

  • Must start with forward slash /
  • May contain multiple path components separated by /
  • Valid characters: alphanumeric, dots, underscores, hyphens, spaces
  • Should handle both absolute and relative paths
  • Common prefixes: /usr/, /etc/, /var/, /home/, /tmp/

Examples:

  • /usr/bin/malware
  • /etc/passwd
  • /var/log/system.log
  • /home/user/.config/app

Validation Rules:

  • Minimum length: 2 characters (e.g., /a)
  • No null bytes, carriage returns, or line feeds
  • Path components should not be empty (no //)
  • Should detect common system directories for confidence boosting

2. Windows File Path Detection

Pattern: [A-Za-z]:\\[^\0\n\r]*

Characteristics:

  • Must start with drive letter followed by :\
  • Backslashes as path separators
  • Case-insensitive drive letters
  • May contain spaces in path components
  • Common prefixes: C:\Windows, C:\Program Files, C:\Users

Examples:

  • C:\Windows\System32\evil.dll
  • D:\Data\config.ini
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\App\binary.exe

UNC Path Support (stretch goal):

  • Pattern: \\\\[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\\[^\0\n\r]*
  • Example: \\server\share\file.txt

Validation Rules:

  • Minimum length: 3 characters (e.g., C:\)
  • Drive letter must be A-Z (case insensitive)
  • Must use backslashes, not forward slashes
  • Should detect common system directories

3. Windows Registry Path Detection

Pattern: HKEY_[A-Z_]+\\[^\0\n\r]*

Root Keys:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU)
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR)
  • HKEY_USERS (HKU)
  • HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG (HKCC)

Examples:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\App\Settings
  • HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services (abbreviated form)

Validation Rules:

  • Must start with valid HKEY root
  • Support both full names and abbreviations (HKLM, HKCU, etc.)
  • Backslash path separator
  • Keys associated with persistence should boost confidence score

Confidence Scoring Criteria

High Confidence (0.8-1.0)

  • Matches pattern AND starts with known system directory
  • Found in appropriate binary format (POSIX paths in ELF/Mach-O, Windows paths in PE)
  • Contains file extension matching context
  • Part of known persistence location

Medium Confidence (0.5-0.8)

  • Matches pattern with valid structure
  • Contains multiple path components
  • Has reasonable length (not too short)

Low Confidence (0.3-0.5)

  • Matches pattern but very short
  • Found in unexpected context
  • Potential false positive (e.g., C:\x could be format string)

Acceptance Criteria

  • FilePathClassifier struct implemented with regex patterns
  • POSIX path detection with validation
  • Windows path detection with validation
  • Registry path detection with all root keys
  • UNC path detection (Windows network paths)
  • Confidence scoring based on context and known paths
  • Integration with SemanticClassifier
  • Comprehensive unit tests covering:
    • Valid POSIX paths
    • Valid Windows paths
    • Valid registry paths
    • Edge cases (short paths, special characters)
    • False positive prevention
    • Confidence score calculations
    • Context-aware classification
  • Documentation updates in classification.md
  • Performance benchmarks for regex matching

Dependencies

Security Implications

File paths in binaries often indicate:

  • Persistence mechanisms: Startup folders, cron jobs, LaunchDaemons
  • Data exfiltration: Sensitive file locations
  • Configuration: Where malware stores settings
  • Logs: Forensic artifacts

High-confidence classification enables analysts to quickly identify these indicators.

Performance Considerations

  • Compile regexes once at initialization (lazy_static or once_cell)
  • Short-circuit on first match to avoid unnecessary regex evaluations
  • Consider string length pre-filtering before regex matching
  • Profile regex performance with criterion benchmarks

    ## Dependencies

    - **Blocked by**: Issue #16 - Semantic Classification Framework (implement base \`SemanticClassifier\` structure)
    - **Related**: Requirements 3.4 (File System Pattern Detection), 3.5 (Registry Path Detection)

    ## Security Implications

    File paths in binaries often indicate:
    - **Persistence mechanisms**: Startup folders, cron jobs, LaunchDaemons
    - **Data exfiltration**: Sensitive file locations
    - **Configuration**: Where malware stores settings
    - **Logs**: Forensic artifacts

    High-confidence classification enables analysts to quickly identify these indicators.

    ## Performance Considerations

    - Compile regexes once at initialization (\`lazy_static\` or \`once_cell\`)
    - Short-circuit on first match to avoid unnecessary regex evaluations
    - Consider string length pre-filtering before regex matching
    - Profile regex performance with \`criterion\` benchmarks

    Plan

    Observations

    The codebase has a well-structured foundation with complete container parsing (ELF, PE, Mach-O) and a functional semantic classification system. The base SemanticClassifier has been implemented with IPv4/IPv6 address detection and URL/domain classification. The task requires implementing file path classification for POSIX, Windows, and Registry paths as the next phase of Issue #17.

    Key findings:

    • src/classification/mod.rs exists with module structure and re-exports
    • src/classification/semantic.rs is fully implemented with URL, domain, and IP detection
    • Tag::FilePath and Tag::RegistryPath already exist in types.rs
    • The regex crate is already in dependencies (version 1.12.2)
    • lazy_static is already in dependencies (version 1.5)
    • FoundString type is the primary input for classification (not StringContext)
    • The classification pattern is to extend SemanticClassifier::classify() with new detection methods
    • Task 9.3 in tasks.md specifically covers this implementation

    Approach

    Extend the existing semantic classification system with file path and registry path detection:

    1. Add file path detection methods to SemanticClassifier in semantic.rs for POSIX, Windows, and UNC paths
    2. Add registry path detection methods to SemanticClassifier in semantic.rs for Windows registry paths
    3. Integrate new detection methods into the main classify() method
    4. Use lazy-static compiled regex patterns for efficient matching
    5. Implement confidence scoring based on pattern characteristics and known suspicious paths
    6. Add comprehensive unit tests for all new detection methods
    7. Update module documentation to reflect file path and registry path capabilities

    Reasoning

    I explored the repository structure and found that the semantic classification system is already partially implemented with URL, domain, and IP address detection. The SemanticClassifier is the primary classifier that processes FoundString objects. Rather than creating separate classifier modules, the most efficient approach is to extend the existing SemanticClassifier with file path and registry path detection methods, following the established pattern of the IPv4/IPv6 and URL/domain detection. This maintains code consistency and simplifies the architecture.

      • is_suspicious_registry_path(&self, text: &str) -> bool: Checks if registry path matches persistence locations
    4. Update the main classify() method to include file path and registry path detection:

      • After checking URLs, domains, and IP addresses
      • Call each path detection method in sequence
      • Append any matching tags to the results vector
      • Return the complete vector of tags
    5. Add helper methods:

    file:tests/classification_integration.rs (New)

    References:

    • file:tests/integration_elf.rs
    • file:src/classification/semantic.rs (Modify)

    Create integration tests for the expanded classification system:

    1. Test setup: Import necessary types from stringy::classification and stringy::types.

    2. End-to-end classification tests:

      • test_classify_mixed_indicators: Test a collection of strings (URLs, paths, registry keys, IPs) and verify each gets correct tags
      • test_classify_all_path_types: Test POSIX, Windows, UNC, and registry paths in a single test
    3. Performance tests:

      • test_classification_performance: Classify 1000+ strings and verify it completes in reasonable time (< 100ms)
      • test_regex_caching: Verify that regex patterns are compiled once and reused
    4. False positive tests:

      • test_no_false_positives_on_random_data: Test random binary data doesn't get classified as paths
      • test_format_strings_not_paths: Verify format strings like C:\\%s don't get classified as paths
      • test_version_numbers_not_paths: Verify version numbers like 1.2.3.4 are classified as IPv4 (not paths)
    5. Snapshot tests: Use insta crate to create snapshot tests of classification results for a set of known strings.

    These integration tests verify the entire classification pipeline works correctly with the new path detection capabilities.

    file:.kiro/specs/stringy-binary-analyzer/tasks.md (Modify)

    Update task 9.3 to mark it as completed:

    1. Change the checkbox from [ ] to [x] for task 9.3 "Implement file path classification"

    2. Add a completion note under task 9.3 indicating:

      • POSIX file path pattern matching implemented
      • Windows file path pattern matching implemented
      • UNC path detection implemented
      • Registry path detection implemented
      • Comprehensive unit tests added
      • Integration tests added

    This tracks the completion of the file path classification feature as specified in the requirements.

    ## Overview

    Implement comprehensive file path pattern matching and classification for the StringyMcStringFace binary analyzer. This feature will enable automatic detection and tagging of file system paths across different operating systems and Windows registry paths.

    ## Background

    The classification system (documented in `docs/src/classification.md`) defines patterns for file paths but lacks the actual implementation in `src/classification/mod.rs`. This feature is critical for malware analysis, as file paths often indicate:
    - Persistence mechanisms (startup folders, system directories)
    - Data exfiltration targets
    - Configuration file locations
    - Temporary file usage patterns

    ## Technical Requirements

    ### 1. POSIX File Path Detection

    **Pattern**: `/[^\0\n\r]*`

    **Characteristics**:
    - Must start with forward slash `/`
    - May contain multiple path components separated by `/`
    - Valid characters: alphanumeric, dots, underscores, hyphens, spaces
    - Should handle both absolute and relative paths
    - Common prefixes: `/usr/`, `/etc/`, `/var/`, `/home/`, `/tmp/`

    **Examples**:
    - `/usr/bin/malware`
    - `/etc/passwd`
    - `/var/log/system.log`
    - `/home/user/.config/app`

    **Validation Rules**:
    - Minimum length: 2 characters (e.g., `/a`)
    - No null bytes, carriage returns, or line feeds
    - Path components should not be empty (no `//`)
    - Should detect common system directories for confidence boosting

    ### 2. Windows File Path Detection

    **Pattern**: `[A-Za-z]:\\[^\0\n\r]*`

    **Characteristics**:
    - Must start with drive letter followed by `:\`
    - Backslashes as path separators
    - Case-insensitive drive letters
    - May contain spaces in path components
    - Common prefixes: `C:\Windows`, `C:\Program Files`, `C:\Users`

    **Examples**:
    - `C:\Windows\System32\evil.dll`
    - `D:\Data\config.ini`
    - `C:\Program Files (x86)\App\binary.exe`

    **UNC Path Support** (stretch goal):
    - Pattern: `\\\\[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\\[^\0\n\r]*`
    - Example: `\\server\share\file.txt`

    **Validation Rules**:
    - Minimum length: 3 characters (e.g., `C:\`)
    - Drive letter must be A-Z (case insensitive)
    - Must use backslashes, not forward slashes
    - Should detect common system directories

    ### 3. Windows Registry Path Detection

    **Pattern**: `HKEY_[A-Z_]+\\[^\0\n\r]*`

    **Root Keys**:
    - `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE` (HKLM)
    - `HKEY_CURRENT_USER` (HKCU)
    - `HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT` (HKCR)
    - `HKEY_USERS` (HKU)
    - `HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG` (HKCC)

    **Examples**:
    - `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run`
    - `HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\App\Settings`
    - `HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services` (abbreviated form)

    **Validation Rules**:
    - Must start with valid HKEY root
    - Support both full names and abbreviations (HKLM, HKCU, etc.)
    - Backslash path separator
    - Keys associated with persistence should boost confidence score

    ## Implementation Structure

    ### Proposed Module Structure

    ```rust
    // src/classification/mod.rs
    mod file_path;
    mod registry;
    mod url;
    mod network;
    // ... other classifiers
    pub struct SemanticClassifier {
        file_path: FilePathClassifier,
        registry: RegistryPathClassifier,
        // ... other classifiers
    }
    impl SemanticClassifier {
        pub fn new() -> Result<Self> {
            Ok(Self {
                file_path: FilePathClassifier::new()?,
                registry: RegistryPathClassifier::new()?,
            })
        }
        pub fn classify(&self, text: &str, context: &StringContext) -> Vec<ClassificationResult> {
            let mut results = Vec::new();
        }
    }
    ```

    ## Confidence Scoring Criteria

    ### High Confidence (0.8-1.0)
    - Matches pattern AND starts with known system directory
    - Found in appropriate binary format (POSIX paths in ELF/Mach-O, Windows paths in PE)

    - Part of known persistence location

    ### Medium Confidence (0.5-0.8)
    - Matches pattern with valid structure
    - Contains multiple path components
    - Has reasonable length (not too short)

    ### Low Confidence (0.3-0.5)
    - Matches pattern but very short
    - Found in unexpected context

        assert!(classifier.is_posix_path("/home/user/.bashrc"));
    }

    #[test]

    ### Windows Tests
    ```rust
    #[test]
    }
    #[test]
    fn test_registry_abbreviated() {
        assert!(classifier.is_registry_path("HKLM\\System\\CurrentControlSet"));
    }
    ```

    ## Dependencies

    - **Previously blocked by**: Issue `#16` - Semantic Classification Framework ✅ **RESOLVED** - Base `SemanticClassifier` structure is now implemented with IPv4/IPv6 and URL detection
    - **Related**: Requirements 3.4 (File System Pattern Detection), 3.5 (Registry Path Detection)

    ## Security Implications

    File paths in binaries often indicate:
    - **Persistence mechanisms**: Startup folders, cron jobs, LaunchDaemons
    - **Data exfiltration**: Sensitive file locations
    - **Configuration**: Where malware stores settings
    - **Logs**: Forensic artifacts

    High-confidence classification enables analysts to quickly identify these indicators.

    ## Performance Considerations

    - Compile regexes once at initialization (`lazy_static` or `once_cell`)
    - Short-circuit on first match to avoid unnecessary regex evaluations
    - Consider string length pre-filtering before regex matching
    - Profile regex performance with `criterion` benchmarks

    @traycerai

    I have updated the Implementation Plan to reflect the recent changes in the ticket.

    Previous Plan

    Observations

    The codebase has a well-structured foundation with complete container parsing (ELF, PE, Mach-O) but the classification module is essentially empty. The task requires implementing file path classification for POSIX, Windows, and Registry paths as part of Issue #17, which is blocked by Issue #16 (Semantic Classification Framework). This means we need to implement both the base framework and the specific classifiers.

    Key findings:

    • src/classification/mod.rs is empty (just a comment)
    • Tag::FilePath and Tag::RegistryPath already exist in types.rs
    • Documentation in docs/src/classification.md provides pseudocode patterns
    • The regex crate is NOT in dependencies yet
    • StringContext and ClassificationResult types are documented but not implemented
    • The container parsers use HashSet for deduplication, establishing a pattern
    • Task 9.3 in tasks.md specifically covers this implementation

    Approach

    Implement a modular classification system with:

    1. Add missing dependencies (regex, once_cell for lazy regex compilation)
    2. Define supporting types (StringContext, ClassificationResult) in types.rs
    3. Create base SemanticClassifier structure in classification/mod.rs
    4. Implement FilePathClassifier in classification/file_path.rs for POSIX, Windows, and UNC paths
    5. Implement RegistryPathClassifier in classification/registry.rs for Windows registry paths
    6. Use confidence scoring based on context (binary format, known directories, suspicious paths)
    7. Add comprehensive unit tests for all classifiers
    8. Update documentation to reflect actual implementation

    Reasoning

    I explored the repository structure and identified that the classification module is empty. I examined the types definitions, documentation patterns, container parser implementations, test structure, and task planning documents. I verified that the regex crate needs to be added and that supporting types need to be defined. I reviewed the existing code patterns (like HashSet usage in ELF parser) to maintain consistency.

    Proposed File Changes

    file:Cargo.toml (Modify)

    Add the regex crate (version ~1.10) and once_cell crate (version ~1.19) to the [dependencies] section. These are required for pattern matching in the classification system and for lazy initialization of compiled regex patterns to improve performance.

    file:src/types.rs (Modify)

    Add two new types at the end of the file:

    1. StringContext struct: Contains context information for classification decisions including:

      • section_type: SectionType - the type of section where string was found
      • section_name: Option<String> - name of the section
      • binary_format: BinaryFormat - the binary format (ELF, PE, MachO)
      • encoding: Encoding - the encoding of the string
      • source: StringSource - where the string came from
    2. ClassificationResult struct: Represents the result of classification with:

      • tag: Tag - the semantic tag assigned
      • confidence: f32 - confidence score from 0.0 to 1.0
      • evidence: Vec<String> - list of evidence strings explaining why this tag was assigned

    Both structs should derive Debug and Clone. Add documentation comments explaining their purpose in the classification pipeline.

    file:src/classification/mod.rs (Modify)

    References:

    • file:docs/src/classification.md (Modify)
    • file:src/types.rs (Modify)

    Implement the base semantic classification framework:

    1. Module declarations: Add pub mod file_path; and pub mod registry; to declare the submodules.

    2. Re-exports: Add pub use file_path::FilePathClassifier; and pub use registry::RegistryPathClassifier; for convenient access.

    3. SemanticClassifier struct: Create the main classifier that orchestrates all specific classifiers. It should contain:

      • file_path: FilePathClassifier - for file path classification
      • registry: RegistryPathClassifier - for registry path classification
    4. Implementation:

      • new() -> Result<Self>: Constructor that initializes all sub-classifiers. Returns Result to handle regex compilation errors.
      • classify(&self, text: &str, context: &StringContext) -> Vec<ClassificationResult>: Main classification method that:
        • Calls each sub-classifier in sequence
        • Collects all classification results
        • Returns a vector of results (strings can match multiple patterns)
    5. Documentation: Add module-level documentation explaining the classification system architecture and how to use it.

    Follow the pattern shown in docs/src/classification.md but adapt to actual Rust implementation.
    Add unit tests at the end of the file in a #[cfg(test)] module:

    1. Integration tests:

      • test_semantic_classifier_creation: Verify SemanticClassifier::new() succeeds
      • test_classify_posix_path: Test that POSIX paths are correctly classified
      • test_classify_windows_path: Test that Windows paths are correctly classified
      • test_classify_registry_path: Test that registry paths are correctly classified
      • test_classify_multiple_patterns: Test a string that doesn't match any pattern returns empty vector
      • test_classify_with_context: Test that context affects confidence scores
    2. Error handling tests:

      • test_empty_string_classification: Verify empty strings return empty results
      • test_invalid_utf8_handling: Test handling of invalid UTF-8 sequences (if applicable)
    3. Helper functions: Create helper functions to build test StringContext objects with different binary formats and section types.

    These tests verify that the SemanticClassifier correctly orchestrates the sub-classifiers and returns appropriate results.

    ## Proposed File Changes

    ### file:Cargo.toml (Modify)

    Add the `regex` crate (version ~1.10) and `once_cell` crate (version ~1.19) to the `[dependencies]` section. These are required for pattern matching in the classification system and for lazy initialization of compiled regex patterns to improve performance.

    ### file:src/types.rs (Modify)

    Add two new types at the end of the file:

    1. **`StringContext` struct**: Contains context information for classification decisions including:
       - `section_type: SectionType` - the type of section where string was found
       - `section_name: Option<String>` - name of the section
       - `binary_format: BinaryFormat` - the binary format (ELF, PE, MachO)
       - `encoding: Encoding` - the encoding of the string
       - `source: StringSource` - where the string came from

    2. **`ClassificationResult` struct**: Represents the result of classification with:
       - `tag: Tag` - the semantic tag assigned
       - `confidence: f32` - confidence score from 0.0 to 1.0
       - `evidence: Vec<String>` - list of evidence strings explaining why this tag was assigned

    Both structs should derive `Debug` and `Clone`. Add documentation comments explaining their purpose in the classification pipeline.

    ### file:src/classification/mod.rs (Modify)

    References:

    - file:docs/src/classification.md (Modify)
    - file:src/types.rs (Modify)

    Implement the base semantic classification framework:

    1. **Module declarations**: Add `pub mod file_path;` and `pub mod registry;` to declare the submodules.

    2. **Re-exports**: Add `pub use file_path::FilePathClassifier;` and `pub use registry::RegistryPathClassifier;` for convenient access.

    3. **`SemanticClassifier` struct**: Create the main classifier that orchestrates all specific classifiers. It should contain:
       - `file_path: FilePathClassifier` - for file path classification
       - `registry: RegistryPathClassifier` - for registry path classification

    4. **Implementation**:
       - `new() -> Result<Self>`: Constructor that initializes all sub-classifiers. Returns `Result` to handle regex compilation errors.
       - `classify(&self, text: &str, context: &StringContext) -> Vec<ClassificationResult>`: Main classification method that:
         - Calls each sub-classifier in sequence
         - Collects all classification results
         - Returns a vector of results (strings can match multiple patterns)

    5. **Documentation**: Add module-level documentation explaining the classification system architecture and how to use it.

    Follow the pattern shown in `docs/src/classification.md` but adapt to actual Rust implementation.
    Add unit tests at the end of the file in a `#[cfg(test)]` module:

    1. **Integration tests**:
       - `test_semantic_classifier_creation`: Verify `SemanticClassifier::new()` succeeds
       - `test_classify_posix_path`: Test that POSIX paths are correctly classified
       - `test_classify_windows_path`: Test that Windows paths are correctly classified
       - `test_classify_registry_path`: Test that registry paths are correctly classified
       - `test_classify_multiple_patterns`: Test a string that doesn't match any pattern returns empty vector
       - `test_classify_with_context`: Test that context affects confidence scores

    2. **Error handling tests**:
       - `test_empty_string_classification`: Verify empty strings return empty results
       - `test_invalid_utf8_handling`: Test handling of invalid UTF-8 sequences (if applicable)

    3. **Helper functions**: Create helper functions to build test `StringContext` objects with different binary formats and section types.

    These tests verify that the `SemanticClassifier` correctly orchestrates the sub-classifiers and returns appropriate results.

    Execution Information

    Branch: main
    Commit: bdd6206

    New Plan

    Observations

    The codebase has a well-structured foundation with complete container parsing (ELF, PE, Mach-O) and a functional semantic classification system. The base SemanticClassifier has been implemented with IPv4/IPv6 address detection and URL/domain classification. The task requires implementing file path classification for POSIX, Windows, and Registry paths as the next phase of Issue #17.

    Key findings:

    • src/classification/mod.rs exists with module structure and re-exports
    • src/classification/semantic.rs is fully implemented with URL, domain, and IP detection
    • Tag::FilePath and Tag::RegistryPath already exist in types.rs

    References:

    • file:src/types.rs (already has Tag::FilePath and Tag::RegistryPath)
    • file:docs/src/classification.md

    Extend the existing SemanticClassifier with file path and registry path detection:

    1. Add lazy-static regex patterns at the top of the file (after existing patterns):

      • POSIX_PATH_REGEX: Pattern ^/[^\0\n\r]* for POSIX paths
      • WINDOWS_PATH_REGEX: Pattern ^[A-Za-z]:\\[^\0\n\r]* for Windows paths
      • UNC_PATH_REGEX: Pattern ^\\\\[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\\[^\0\n\r]* for UNC paths
      • REGISTRY_PATH_REGEX: Pattern ^HKEY_[A-Z_]+\\[^\0\n\r]* for full registry paths
      • REGISTRY_ABBREV_REGEX: Pattern ^HK(LM|CU|CR|U|CC)\\[^\0\n\r]* for abbreviated registry forms
    2. Add static HashSet collections (using lazy_static!) for:

      • SUSPICIOUS_POSIX_PATHS: Common persistence locations like /etc/cron.d/, /etc/init.d/, /usr/local/bin/, /tmp/, /var/tmp/
      • SUSPICIOUS_WINDOWS_PATHS: Like C:\\Windows\\System32\\, C:\\Windows\\Temp\\, C:\\Users\\*\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup\\

    ### Observations

    The codebase has a well-structured foundation with complete container parsing (ELF, PE, Mach-O) and a functional semantic classification system. The base `SemanticClassifier` has been implemented with IPv4/IPv6 address detection and URL/domain classification. The task requires implementing file path classification for POSIX, Windows, and Registry paths as the next phase of Issue #17.

    Key findings:
    - `src/classification/mod.rs` exists with module structure and re-exports
    - `src/classification/semantic.rs` is fully implemented with URL, domain, and IP detection
    - `Tag::FilePath` and `Tag::RegistryPath` already exist in `types.rs`
    - The `regex` crate is already in dependencies (version 1.12.2)
    - `lazy_static` is already in dependencies (version 1.5)
    - `FoundString` type is the primary input for classification (not `StringContext`)
    - The classification pattern is to extend `SemanticClassifier::classify()` with new detection methods
    - Task 9.3 in tasks.md specifically covers this implementation

    ### Approach

    Extend the existing semantic classification system with file path and registry path detection:
    1. Add file path detection methods to `SemanticClassifier` in `semantic.rs` for POSIX, Windows, and UNC paths
    2. Add registry path detection methods to `SemanticClassifier` in `semantic.rs` for Windows registry paths
    3. Integrate new detection methods into the main `classify()` method
    4. Use lazy-static compiled regex patterns for efficient matching
    5. Implement confidence scoring based on pattern characteristics and known suspicious paths
    6. Add comprehensive unit tests for all new detection methods
    7. Update module documentation to reflect file path and registry path capabilities

    ### Reasoning

    I explored the repository structure and found that the semantic classification system is already partially implemented with URL, domain, and IP address detection. The `SemanticClassifier` is the primary classifier that processes `FoundString` objects. Rather than creating separate classifier modules, the most efficient approach is to extend the existing `SemanticClassifier` with file path and registry path detection methods, following the established pattern of the IPv4/IPv6 and URL/domain detection. This maintains code consistency and simplifies the architecture.

    - file:docs/src/classification.md

    Extend the existing `SemanticClassifier` with file path and registry path detection:

    1. **Add lazy-static regex patterns** at the top of the file (after existing patterns):
       - `POSIX_PATH_REGEX`: Pattern `^/[^\0\n\r]*` for POSIX paths
       - `WINDOWS_PATH_REGEX`: Pattern `^[A-Za-z]:\\[^\0\n\r]*` for Windows paths
       - `UNC_PATH_REGEX`: Pattern `^\\\\[a-zA-Z0-9.-]+\\[^\0\n\r]*` for UNC paths
       - `REGISTRY_PATH_REGEX`: Pattern `^HKEY_[A-Z_]+\\[^\0\n\r]*` for full registry paths
       - `REGISTRY_ABBREV_REGEX`: Pattern `^HK(LM|CU|CR|U|CC)\\[^\0\n\r]*` for abbreviated registry forms

    2. **Add static HashSet collections** (using `lazy_static!`) for:
