The Helm chart still defaulted GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET to changeme. Any install that did not override it signed UI logins with a secret printed in this repository, so anyone could forge a session. Compose was fixed in #78; the chart was not.

It was worse than a weak default. The values file suggested envFrom for secrets, but the chart rendered env with changeme next to it, and Kubernetes lets env win. A Secret supplied that way was silently replaced.

The fix

  • No default. helm install, helm upgrade and helm template stop before touching the cluster when the secret is missing, set in two places, empty, or a placeholder (changeme, change-me, your-secret-here, any case). The error prints the openssl rand -hex 32 line and the values key.
  • uiJwtSecret.existingSecret reads the secret from a Kubernetes Secret, so it never sits in a values file or the Deployment spec. env.GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET and an extraEnvVars entry keep working, so releases that already set a real secret upgrade unchanged.
  • Schema refuses an empty value and the placeholders. NOTES say where the secret came from and how to roll the pods after rotating it. Env values are now YAML-quoted.
  • Chart 0.6.0. appVersion and image.tag are both 1.2.16.6, the newest image tag.
  • Docs, examples and the README now show the generate line or existingSecret. The Helmfile example is pinned to 0.6.0 so its values match the chart.

CI

chart.yml adds one job, chart, on every pull request and push to main, with no path filter so it always reports. It runs on ubuntu-latest with SHA-pinned actions:

  1. helm lint --strict.
  2. .github/scripts/chart-guard.sh. Eight unsafe inputs must fail with the expected message. Four supported inputs must render and pass kubeconform. The pinned image must equal appVersion and never be latest.
  3. .github/scripts/chart-install.sh in kind. It installs with the secret in a Secret and checks that the container holds that value. It checks that the UI answers 200 and that helm test passes. Last, it checks that an upgrade without the secret is refused while the release stays at revision 1.

Red-then-green, run locally on Helm 4.3.0 and 3.22.0:

# guard suite against main's chart
FAIL defaults: rendered, but it must be refused
FAIL changeme: rendered, but it must be refused
...
10 case(s) failed
# against this branch
all cases passed

release-chart.yml keeps publishing through chart-releaser to the gh-pages index. Its actions are now pinned by SHA.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Helm chart 0.6.0 lets you provide the UI JWT secret through an existing Kubernetes Secret or a configured environment value.
    • Chart installation, upgrades, and rendering reject missing, empty, duplicate, or placeholder UI JWT secrets. No default secret is provided.
    • Chart notes identify the configured secret source and explain how to restart the deployment after rotating the secret.
  • Documentation

    • Updated setup guides and examples explain how to generate and supply the required secret for Docker Compose and Helm, including using an existing Kubernetes Secret.

…shipping changeme

The chart defaulted GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET to changeme, so any install that
did not override it signed UI logins with a public secret. A Secret supplied
through envFrom did not help either: env (with the default) wins over envFrom.

The default is gone. install, upgrade and template now stop before touching
the cluster when the secret is missing, set twice, empty or a placeholder, and
the error prints the openssl line and the values key. uiJwtSecret.existingSecret
reads it from a Kubernetes Secret; env.GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET and extraEnvVars
keep working. The schema refuses the placeholders, NOTES says where the secret
came from, and the chart is 0.6.0.

A new chart workflow runs on every pull request: helm lint, a guard suite in
which every unsafe input must fail and every supported one must render and pass
kubeconform, and a kind install that checks the secret reached the container,
the UI answers, helm test passes and an upgrade without the secret is refused.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Helm chart now requires a UI JWT secret from one configured source and supports referencing a Kubernetes Secret. New CI checks validate chart rendering and installation. Documentation and examples describe secret configuration and use chart version 0.6.0.

The chart removes the default JWT secret and validates that exactly one supported source is configured. It supports an existing Kubernetes Secret, quotes environment values, and reports secret-source guidance in Helm NOTES. The chart version changes to 0.6.0.
Render validation and CI wiring
.github/scripts/chart-guard.sh, .github/workflows/chart.yml, .github/workflows/release-chart.yml, CHANGELOG.md
The guard checks rejected and accepted render cases, manifest content, strict kubeconform validation, and the rendered image tag. The chart workflow runs the checks, and the release workflow pins its actions to commit SHAs.
Kind installation checks
.github/scripts/chart-install.sh, .github/workflows/chart.yml, CHANGELOG.md, docs/how-it-works.md
The installation check verifies Secret delivery, the UI response, and helm test. It also verifies that an upgrade without the secret fails and leaves the release revision unchanged.

Add a UI JWT secret source to both external MongoDB installs.

Both commands omit GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET and uiJwtSecret.existingSecret. The chart now rejects both installs before deploying GenieACS. Add a generated --set env.GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET=... value or a reference to a Secret created in the namespace.

Make both new chart scripts POSIX-compatible. Both scripts use Bash shebangs and pipefail; the guard script also uses local.

…examples the guard now rejects

Trim the UI JWT secret before the placeholder check, so " changeme " and a
blank value are refused too; the guard suite covers both. The two external
MongoDB examples in Getting started now pass a secret, and every example that
creates a Secret creates the namespace first. The chart scripts are POSIX sh,
as the repo requires, and the install test checks the revision it compares.

Outside-diff finding on getting-started.md: fixed in ee56c69. The inline-URL example passes --set env.GENIEACS_UI_JWT_SECRET=$(openssl rand -hex 32). The Secret example creates the namespace, a genieacs-ui-jwt Secret next to the MongoDB one, and sets uiJwtSecret.existingSecret.

POSIX nitpick: taken, since the repo rule asks for #!/bin/sh. Both scripts pass shellcheck -s sh and run under dash. The ERR trap in chart-install.sh became an EXIT handler that dumps cluster state on any failure.
