Specification: optional Flisk start path next to docker-compose.yaml (feature 104) - #4936
This is the specification PR of the two-PR workflow in docs/Contribute.md: spec, plan, tasks and open questions for feature 104, no implementation. I'd like to know whether you want this at all (Q-104-01) before sending the implementation.
What it proposes
An optional second way to start the same stack with Flisk: one service.json per Compose service under services/lychee/, and a Compose file generated from them in .autogenerated/docker-compose.yml. docker-compose.yaml stays the documented main path and is not edited; no PHP, frontend, API or image change.
Same Docker volume names (lychee_prod_mysql, lychee_ai_vision_embeddings, lychee_nsfw_queue) and ./lychee/* bind mounts, so an existing install switches without copying data.
lychee_api / lychee_db keep working as hostnames (network aliases).
The generated file runs with plain Compose, no Flisk needed; a CI job checks it stays in step.
Original docker-compose.yaml, fresh volumes: API healthy in 104 s, / → /install/admin. I wrote a marker row into the database, then down (volumes kept).
Generated file (flisk-import 0.14.0 → flisk-export 0.7.0) on the same volumes: API and worker healthy in 12 s, the marker row is read back, lychee_api resolves from lychee_facial_recognition, and the installer page is the same as with docker-compose.yaml (screenshots of both below).
A per-service comparison of docker compose config --no-interpolate for both files leaves only equivalent forms (CMD-SHELL vs CMD sh -c, explicit 0.0.0.0 bind, read_only: false omitted).
Not checked yet: flisk up itself (it needs the Flisk release that is being cut now), the optional profiles, Linux/amd64.
Disclosure
I work on Flisk. This was prepared with Claude Code (Opus) following AGENTS.md, and run and checked by me. If an optional start path isn't something you want, closing this is completely fine.
Added a draft specification for optional Flisk startup of the Lychee stack, covering service configuration, generated Compose output, compatibility requirements, and setup scenarios.
Added a draft implementation plan and task checklist outlining configuration, verification, documentation, and CI work.
Added open questions about an optional Flisk start path and the generated Compose file location.
Added the feature to the roadmap as a low-priority draft pending review.
Optional Flisk start path next to docker-compose.yaml (unchanged): spec,
plan, tasks and open questions only, per the two-PR SDD workflow.

- Line 41: **Align the importer version used for verification.**
The re-check uses `flisk-import 0.17.1`, but the reproducible command pins
`flisk-import@0.16.0`. Run the import and parity checks with the pinned version,
or update the pin and task commands to the tested version.
- Line 37: **Include restart-policy parity.**
`docker-compose.yaml` defines restart policies for existing services. Add
`restart` to the FR-104-04 parity fields so CI detects drift in this behavior.
- Line 65: **Add `--wait` to the S-104-01 start command.**
The scenario runs `flisk up lychee` and then expects a healthy API and the
`/install/admin` redirect. The recorded check of this path used `flisk up lychee
--wait` (spec line 85). Without `--wait`, the assertion can run before the
services report healthy. Use the same command in the scenario, `tasks.md`
(T-104-06 and its verification command), and `plan.md` so the three documents
match the recorded check.

Walkthrough
The change adds draft documentation for Feature 104, an optional Flisk launch path for Lychee. It describes requirements and scenarios, proposes implementation increments and tasks, records open questions, and adds the feature to the roadmap.
The draft specification describes an optional Flisk launch path alongside the existing Compose path. It defines requirements, scenarios, verification checks, and fixture entries.
Plan and tracking docs/specs/4-architecture/features/104-flisk-option/plan.md, docs/specs/4-architecture/features/104-flisk-option/tasks.md, docs/specs/4-architecture/features/104-flisk-option/open-questions.md, docs/specs/4-architecture/roadmap.md
The draft plan and checklist outline implementation increments and verification tasks. The open-questions log lists two active questions. The roadmap adds Feature 104 as a low-priority draft awaiting review.
This change only adds specification documents; no application behavior changes. A few spec and checklist gaps should be fixed before implementation, mainly the missing health-check task and the readiness and version alignment, but none of them blocks merging the draft.

Pin and record the required Flisk contract before implementation.
The plan depends on container.networkAliases, healthCheck.startPeriod, flisk import . --yes, and flisk export compose --check, but it does not pin the Flisk CLI release that provides these fields and options. The plan and specification also use different forms of the export command.
Resolve these exact fields and commands against the selected releases. If a contract is unsupported or differs, record it in open-questions.md and revise the affected requirements before implementation.

Self-review: a real flisk up on the existing install (10 screenshots and logs)
I ran the implementation that goes with this spec (not pushed yet; it's the follow-up PR) three ways on the same Docker volumes: the original docker-compose.yaml, the generated .autogenerated/docker-compose.yml with plain Compose, and flisk up on the released Flisk 1.4.28. Below is what I checked, what I had to change, and what's still open. The terminal-style images are the real command output, saved as logs and shown as pages; the text of each log is under its image.
Setup: Lychee master at 4e5d5c8 (this spec PR is 39cf640) plus the generated files: services/lychee/*/service.json from flisk-import@0.16.0, .autogenerated/docker-compose.yml from flisk-export@0.9.0. macOS (Apple Silicon, Docker 29.5.2 in Colima). .env holds only APP_KEY, DB_PASSWORD, DB_ROOT_PASSWORD and APP_URL=http://localhost:8000 (no APP_PORT). The volumes lychee_prod_mysql and lychee_ai_vision_embeddings hold an install made earlier by the original docker-compose.yaml, with a flisk_marker table written by it. Flisk was started with FLISK_HTTP_PORT=8180 FLISK_HTTPS_PORT=8543 flisk up because other stacks were running on this Mac.
1. Lychee opens the same installer page
Original docker-compose.yaml: / → 307 /install/admin:
After flisk up, same volumes: the same page:
Both show the red "Please fix the errors before going to the next step." banner with an empty error list. It's there with the original file too, so it isn't caused by Flisk; I didn't dig into it and didn't click through the installer (that would write to the install).
2. Flisk brought the stack up (13 of 14, one failure explained below)
flisk up output: lychee-db, lychee-api and lychee-worker ready; lychee-facial-recognition fails its health check, so Flisk reports "not ready":
08-flisk-up.log (text)

4. The API port traced .env → service.json → generated Compose → Docker
.env has no APP_PORT, so every layer falls back to 8000 the same way: docker-compose.yaml → extraPorts.publish in lychee-api/service.json → both generated Compose files → Docker's binding ("HostIp":"", all interfaces, as with the original). The same log shows the DB settings the API container actually got:
Network: 0.0.0.0:8000 and [::]:8000, the same as the original file. Loopback and this Mac's LAN address both answer (307 to the installer, /up 200), which is what "${APP_PORT:-8000}:8000" does today. Flisk's own router is on 127.0.0.1:8180 only; the LAN address gets no connection there:
"DATABASE_URL": "" on lychee-api and lychee-worker. Flisk 1.4.28 adds a DATABASE_URL pointing at its own PostgreSQL to every service, and Laravel's config/database.php reads 'url' => env('DATABASE_URL') ahead of DB_HOST. The API crash-looped on connection to server at "lychee_postgres" ... "client_encoding": "utf8mb4". The empty value keeps it on MariaDB (DATABASE_URL= in 10-config.log); docker-compose.yaml never sets the variable, so plain Compose is unaffected. Flisk-side: bug(engine): flisk up injects DATABASE_URL (shared Postgres) into bring-your-own services that do not use it flisk-sh/flisk#2991.
flisk-import 0.16.0 now keeps condition: service_healthy in each dependsOn (0.14.0 wrote bare names); the generated Compose file is byte-identical either way.
Checked
Same volume names (lychee_prod_mysql, lychee_ai_vision_embeddings, lychee_nsfw_queue) and the same ./lychee/* bind mounts; the existing install was picked up with no copying.
Optional profiles stay optional: phpmyadmin, nsfw and geo-decoding keep their profiles in the generated file and didn't start.
Behaviour changes worth knowing
Under flisk up the containers are named lychee-lychee-autogenerated-<service>-1 instead of lychee-api / lychee-worker (container_name is dropped). Anything that does docker exec lychee-api ... needs the new name; other containers reach the services by the lychee_api / lychee_db aliases as before.
flisk up waits for lychee-facial-recognition to be healthy, so the curl-less health check (section 2) makes it report "not ready". A fix on Lychee's side would be a health check the image can run, e.g. its own python3; I left it as is to match docker-compose.yaml.
phpmyadmin/service.json gets a validation warning (Invalid port: 80. Must be integer 3000-9999); it's in a profile and wasn't started.
flisk up writes .tiltignore, shared-platform-engineering/ and services/platform/ into the repo; the implementation PR needs them in .gitignore.
Still not verified
Linux and amd64, and a second machine. One reason: this Mac is the only machine here (Colima on Apple Silicon), so there is no Linux/amd64 host to run it on and no other host to reach port 8000 from. Not faked.
A photo upload (the write I made through the app is an album, not a photo), and why the installer shows an empty red "Please fix the errors" banner (it does so on the original file too).
Re-verified (second pass)
Same install, same volumes (lychee_prod_mysql, lychee_ai_vision_embeddings). Test admin account created for this run (password not shown). Part A is Flisk 1.4.28 and plain Compose; part B is Flisk 1.4.29 from npm.
A1. Installer, admin account, and a write that survives a restart (generated Compose file, then the original)
Opened http://127.0.0.1:8000/install/admin on the generated file (docker compose --env-file .env -f .autogenerated/docker-compose.yml up -d), created the admin through the installer form ("Admin account has been created."), signed in, and created an album through the app's "+" menu:
Then down (volumes kept) and up again. The sign-in session is gone with the container, so I signed in again with the same account: it works, and the album is there. The DB read shows the same rows:
01-gen-restart.log (text)

A2. Profiles on the generated file, and under flisk up --profile
Without a profile only the four default services exist (config --services). With --profile geo-decoding --profile phpmyadmin --profile nsfw all three start. geo-decoding answers /health 200 and a real reverse lookup (Paris); phpMyAdmin serves its login page (I did not sign in); nsfw answers 200 on /api/nsfw/health from inside its container:

flisk up --profile geo-decoding phpmyadmin nsfw (1.4.28) starts all three; phpMyAdmin is healthy, the other two plus facial recognition end "not ready" for the health-check reason above. Tilt shows 3 red (those three), 24 green. Also seen in that run's output: nsfw started before lychee-api was healthy and exited twice with "Cannot connect to Lychee at http://lychee_api:8000/up", then restart: unless-stopped brought it up; Compose waits for the dependency, Flisk did not.

On 1.4.28 geo-decoding was OOM-killed by Flisk's default 512M limit (oom=true exit=137, 12 restarts), and again at 1G. It only came up with "memory": "2G" (it peaks near 1.9 GiB while loading, about 2.5 minutes). That is flisk-sh/flisk#2992 again; plain Compose has no limit.

# (captured in this session before the "memory" entry was added; with "1G" it was OOM-killed again, 15 restarts; with "2G" it was killed once more while loading (it peaks near 1.9 GiB over about 2.5 minutes), then answered)
# plain Compose (no limit) used about 540 MiB once loaded; at start-up it peaks above 1.2 GiB:
$ docker stats --no-stream # with 2G, right after start

A3. Facial recognition's health check fails under their original Compose file too (upstream, not changed)
docker-compose.yaml checks it with curl -f http://localhost:8000/health. On the original file (no Flisk, no generated file) the container is unhealthy with exec: "curl": executable file not found, there is neither curl nor wget in the image, and /health answers 200 when asked with the image's own Python. The image is ghcr.io/lycheeorg/lychee-facial-recognition (digest in the log); the fix belongs in that image or in their health check, and I did not change either.

B. Flisk 1.4.29, from a fresh clone
bun add @flisk-sh/flisk@1.4.29 in a scratch folder, a fresh clone of Lychee into a folder named Lychee (capital L), .env copied, then regenerated with flisk-import@latest (0.17.1) and @flisk-sh/flisk-export@latest (0.9.0). Compared with the earlier hand-edited files, the only differences are the workarounds (DATABASE_URL, two memory entries) and phpMyAdmin's port written as "publish": "8080". flisk up lychee with no workaround:
Local workaround
On 1.4.29
Project name lychee
Fixed. Import writes it lowercase from the Lychee folder; I did not touch it.
memory: 4G on facial recognition
Fixed.docker inspect memory limit is 0 (unlimited), not OOM-killed. geo-decoding and nsfw are 0 too.
"DATABASE_URL": "" on api/worker
Not fixed.lychee-api still gets Flisk's Postgres DATABASE_URL and crash-loops.

Why: flisk-sh/flisk#3001 stops the injection unless the service asks for the shared database, but discovery fills databaseName for every service (discovery/manifest/loading.star), and the 1.4.29 check treats any databaseName as asking. No service.json here sets one. I added a temporary print() to my local copy of the vendored extension to see the input; that is the only edit to Flisk code and it is reverted. flisk-sh/flisk#2991 is still open.

It ends "not ready" only because of the curl-less health check (A3). Facial recognition also started before the API was healthy, was restarted twice (restarts=2) after "Cannot connect to Lychee", and recovered (Lychee is reachable (status=200)). C. Flisk 1.4.30: no workaround left
Flisk 1.4.30 has the #2991 fix (flisk-sh/flisk#3010: a databaseName that discovery computed no longer counts as asking for the shared Postgres). Fresh clone into a folder named Lychee, bun add @flisk-sh/flisk@1.4.30, regenerated with flisk-import@latest (0.17.1) and @flisk-sh/flisk-export@latest (0.9.0), no local workaround: no "DATABASE_URL": "" on api/worker, no memory on facial recognition, project name lowercase only because import wrote it from the Lychee folder. The only memory entries left are the 2G that docker-compose.yaml itself sets on api and worker. Same volumes. flisk up lychee:
lychee-api and lychee-worker healthy, lychee-db healthy, /up 200, no restarts.
The api container has noDATABASE_URL and no TILT_DATABASE_URL; the generated app Compose file has no DATABASE_URL at all. DB_CONNECTION=mysql, DB_HOST=lychee_db. env | grep -i DATABASE still shows DATABASE_NAME=lychee_lychee (Flisk's own name for the database it would create; Lychee ignores it), next to Lychee's own DB_DATABASE and QUEUE_CONNECTION.
Facial recognition: memory limit 0 (unlimited), not OOM-killed. It started before the API was healthy and was restarted twice (restarts=2) before it could reach Lychee, as on 1.4.29. It ends "not ready" only because its health check calls curl (A3).
The account and album from A1 are still there (DB read and signed in under flisk up).

What this means for the implementation
On Flisk 1.4.30 or later none of the four local workarounds is needed. "DATABASE_URL": "" on lychee-api and lychee-worker is only for Flisk 1.4.29 and older (set DATABASE_URL to an empty string there); the project-name and memory entries are only for 1.4.28 and older.
The spec says this (FR-104-06, FR-104-07, FR-104-08).
Updated the spec with what the real flisk up run found (FR-104-06 … 09, T-104-06): lowercase project name, an empty DATABASE_URL on api/worker, a memory limit on facial recognition, and the .gitignore entries. The three Flisk-side causes are filed (flisk-sh/flisk#1519, #2991, #2992) and being fixed there; until then they are requirements of the implementation PR. Also recorded as out of scope (N-104-04): the facial-recognition health check and the installer banner, which behave the same with docker-compose.yaml.
…sk 1.4.29
FR-104-06 and FR-104-08 are fixed in 1.4.29 (kept as a note for older versions);
FR-104-07 is still needed (discovery fills databaseName, so DATABASE_URL is still injected).

Updated my self-review comment above with a "Re-verified" section (screenshots and logs), and pushed 009aa33 to the spec branch.
What changed in the spec: on Flisk 1.4.29, FR-104-06 (lowercase project name) and FR-104-08 (facial recognition memory) need no workaround any more; the older-version note is kept. FR-104-07 ("DATABASE_URL": "" on api/worker) is still needed: 1.4.29 still injects it, the section above says why.
Still not verified: Linux/amd64 and a second machine (only this Mac is available).
Re-checked from a fresh clone with no workaround: API and worker healthy, no
DATABASE_URL or TILT_DATABASE_URL in the api container. T-104-06 shrinks to the .gitignore.

Re-checked on Flisk 1.4.30 (fresh clone, no workaround at all): API and worker healthy, no DATABASE_URL or TILT_DATABASE_URL in the api container, and the album from the earlier test reads back. Screenshots and the raw log are in a new section C of my self-review comment above. Spec updated and pushed: FR-104-07 is now "fixed in Flisk 1.4.30, no workaround needed" (older versions: set DATABASE_URL to an empty string), and T-104-06 shrinks to the .gitignore.
Unchanged: facial recognition, geo-decoding and nsfw still report unhealthy because their images lack curl/wget; Linux/amd64 and a second machine are not verified.
…nd an APP_KEY-only .env, from a Linux amd64 run

Checked on a second machine and OS: Linux amd64 (GitHub ubuntu-latest, Docker on Ubuntu 24.04), Flisk 1.4.30, flisk-import 0.16.0, @flisk-sh/flisk-export 0.9.0, fresh clone of this branch. Run: https://github.com/odykyi/Lychee/actions/runs/41359851265 (logs, docker ps and flisk status --json are in its artifact).
Result: flisk up lychee --wait exits 0 with Stack is healthy. lychee-api, lychee-worker, lychee-db and lychee-facial-recognition are healthy, / returns 307 to /install/admin, /up returns 200.
Getting there found two mistakes in the spec, now fixed and pushed:
.env: S-104-01/02 said cp .env.example .env. That file is the bare-metal one (DB_CONNECTION=sqlite), so the API restarts with Database file at path [lychee] does not exist, under docker-compose.yaml too. The steps now write a .env with only APP_KEY.
Facial recognition (new FR-104-10): its health check calls curl, which the image does not have, so flisk up --wait exits 1 on every Flisk version. The Flisk service.json now uses the image's own Python (urllib.request.urlopen('http://localhost:8000/health')), which returns 200 in the container. docker-compose.yaml is unchanged.
Also merged the current master (the roadmap row for feature 105 conflicted); both rows are kept.
Not checked: the nsfw and geo-decoding profiles on Linux (their health checks are unchanged, N-104-04).
Re-checked on Flisk 1.4.31 (Linux amd64, GitHub ubuntu-latest): flisk up lychee --wait exits 0, lychee-api, lychee-worker, lychee-db and lychee-facial-recognition healthy, / → 307 /install/admin, /up → 200. Flisk's own PostgreSQL no longer starts (flisk-sh/flisk#2963, in 1.4.31). Run: https://github.com/odykyi/Lychee/actions/runs/41364699358. The spec now asks for 1.4.31.

## Known `flisk up` requirements (found on Flisk 1.4.28, re-checked on 1.4.29 and 1.4.30)
Running the generated stack under `flisk up` (not only as plain Compose) needed three things that the plain Compose path does not on Flisk 1.4.28 (flisk-sh/flisk#1519, #2991, #2992). Flisk 1.4.29 (flisk-sh/flisk#3001) fixes two of them and Flisk 1.4.30 (flisk-sh/flisk#3010) the third. Re-checked from a fresh clone with `flisk-import` 0.17.1 and `@flisk-sh/flisk-export` 0.9.0:

Align the importer version used for verification.
The re-check uses flisk-import 0.17.1, but the reproducible command pins flisk-import@0.16.0. Run the import and parity checks with the pinned version, or update the pin and task commands to the tested version.
| S-104-01 | Fresh clone, `echo "APP_KEY=base64:$(openssl rand -base64 32)" > .env` (`.env.example` is the bare-metal file: its `DB_CONNECTION=sqlite` makes the API look for a SQLite file and restart, under `docker-compose.yaml` too), then `flisk up lychee`: API healthy, `/` redirects to `/install/admin`. |
The scenario runs flisk up lychee and then expects a healthy API and the /install/admin redirect. The recorded check of this path used flisk up lychee --wait (spec line 85). Without --wait, the assertion can run before the services report healthy. Use the same command in the scenario, tasks.md (T-104-06 and its verification command), and plan.md so the three documents match the recorded check.

-[ ] T-104-04 – Add `.github/workflows/flisk.yml`: re-import from `docker-compose.yaml` and export with the pinned versions in a scratch copy, then `git diff --exit-code -- services .flisk .autogenerated`; and the normalised per-service `docker compose config` comparison of `docker-compose.yaml` vs the generated file (S-104-04).
_Verification:_ the job fails on a test branch that edits `docker-compose.yaml` only, and on one that edits a `service.json` only.
-[ ] T-104-06 – Apply FR-104-09 (`.gitignore`). FR-104-06, 07 and 08 need no workaround on Flisk 1.4.30 (keep them only for older versions). Re-run `flisk up lychee` from a fresh clone on 1.4.30 (S-104-01).
_Verification commands:_`flisk up lychee`; `docker inspect` memory limit; API healthy; `docker exec <api> env | grep -i DATABASE_URL` is empty.
-[ ] T-104-05 – Record S-104-01 … 05 with screenshots and logs in the implementation PR.
_Verification commands:_ for each of S-104-01 to S-104-05, attach the command output and a screenshot, labelled with the scenario ID, to the implementation PR.

Add FR-104-10 to the checklist and use the pinned Flisk version.
The checklist must include the Python health-check change and verify lychee-facial-recognition with flisk up lychee --wait on Flisk 1.4.31 or later. Update T-104-06 so it no longer validates Flisk 1.4.30.

This is the specification PR of the two-PR workflow in
docs/Contribute.md: spec, plan, tasks and open questions for feature 104, no implementation. I'd like to know whether you want this at all (Q-104-01) before sending the implementation. What it proposes
An optional second way to start the same stack with Flisk: one
service.jsonper Compose service underservices/lychee/, and a Compose file generated from them in.autogenerated/docker-compose.yml.docker-compose.yamlstays the documented main path and is not edited; no PHP, frontend, API or image change.lychee_prod_mysql,lychee_ai_vision_embeddings,lychee_nsfw_queue) and./lychee/*bind mounts, so an existing install switches without copying data.lychee_api/lychee_dbkeep working as hostnames (network aliases).Already checked (scratch machine, macOS, Docker 29.5.2)
docker-compose.yaml, fresh volumes: API healthy in 104 s,/→/install/admin. I wrote a marker row into the database, thendown(volumes kept).lychee_apiresolves fromlychee_facial_recognition, and the installer page is the same as withdocker-compose.yaml(screenshots of both below).docker compose config --no-interpolatefor both files leaves only equivalent forms (CMD-SHELLvsCMD sh -c, explicit0.0.0.0bind,read_only: falseomitted). Not checked yet:
flisk upitself (it needs the Flisk release that is being cut now), the optional profiles, Linux/amd64.Disclosure
I work on Flisk. This was prepared with Claude Code (Opus) following
AGENTS.md, and run and checked by me. If an optional start path isn't something you want, closing this is completely fine.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
