In past the online stream buffer indicator bug was also very hard to fix but later it was fixed. That was not even a deal breaking issue.
But this is playback related, it's not something we can avoid. Seeking forward backward is very common task. So take time.
Issue description:
Whenever streaming video using yt-dlp then the seek within buffer area is slow. It gives a feeling that the video is not buffered or the seek is outside of buffer. But in reality it's inside buffer but it's still very slow.
It doesn't happen when the video has audio video combined format. For example, many pirated sites give direct mkv file link. Those have no issue.
The issue mostly happens with YouTube because it has separate audio and video stream. I said mostly. Because some YouTube videos seek fine. So exact cause is unknown.
Fix:
Fix is hard because we don't know the reason. The only way is to try older builds.
If anyone has secondary device then first check the stable builds.
Install 2.5.0, if issue found then install 2.4.0 then 2.3.0 and so on. When you find fixed version then try beta builds one by one and find out the exact patch when it was broken.
This is the only way we can find the issue.
I don't have extra device. Please someone do this.
Final thoughts:
If you are busy or don't want to work on this then it's okay. There are other persons too. WaruiDevil, Arnab, Utsav and most importantly the person who developed yt-dlp SunnyVishnu.
Anybody can look into this.
Notes: I don't know this is mpv issue or not. Official mpv doesn't have yt-dlp integration. So can't check this in mpv. But I checked this in mpvRex latest stable version. It has no issue.
