ADR Boundary Slice

  • Canonical ledger: none; no programme is active.
  • Slice: opt-in, bounded request-to-decision receipts for mcp wrap.
  • Builder: Codex (root).
  • Reviewer: non-building Codex (request_receipt_final_review); its exact-head record will be relayed separately. Claude Desktop and Muse supplied advisory review, not quorum.
  • Final head SHA: fb676331cd64208aebafdc2572160daaad1a7cd0.
  • ADR invariants affected: preserve ADR-042/043 identifiers, source-admission boundaries, and separation of observations, policy decisions and outcomes.

Behavior

mcp wrap --request-receipts-out PATH optionally retains original request-line bytes and the identifier/digest of the actual emitted decision event in a separate, privately created file. Existing identifiers, policy decisions and forwarding remain unchanged. The option requires decision logging.

Receipt capture is bounded to 1 MiB per request, 48 records and 4 MiB serialized total. A limit or write failure stops receipt capture with an incomplete diagnostic while normal proxy handling continues. Existing output files and output-path aliases are rejected before producers start. The guide documents reconciliation and evidence limits.

Non-Claims

  • No scalar trust score or whole-action verdict
  • No generic identity, delegation, federation, HTTP/OAuth, or broad MCP scan
  • No provider-outcome, compliance, certification, partnership, or safe-agent claim

The receipt records a producer-reported association with caller-asserted metadata. It does not establish authenticated identity, delivery, execution, durable completeness, kernel causality or vendor-source admission. No production recipient validator is added. Full A/B/C remains on HOLD, including the remaining real-session comparison scope; this PR does not authorize or claim that experiment.

Test Evidence

Linux verification used Ubuntu 24.04/aarch64, Linux 6.8.0-147, rustc 1.96.0, in isolated snapshot /home/ubuntu/request-receipt.

RED

The pre-change release binary rejected the missing opt-in flag. At implementation commit 5e7dac93d9c248c3e2d161c49aef0f0be3fe8b59, a compiled mutation bypassing the actual request decorator failed the receipt/event-population regression; no-op and restored controls passed. This mutation evidence belongs to that commit, not the final fixture-only portability commit.

GREEN

At 5e7dac93d9c248c3e2d161c49aef0f0be3fe8b59: 39 proxy unit tests, 27 Rust tests across five integration targets, and affected-target clippy with -D warnings passed.

At earlier head 5d1c90b0fd6c57581785b2db74df3a7870963f08: fresh receipt integration, affected-target clippy, formatting and diff checks passed. The final change sends fixture stdin as bytes to avoid platform newline translation; production code is unchanged. An independent reviewer reran all 19 synthetic scenarios on Linux with zero skips and matched the complete committed source inventory. That earlier debug binary SHA-256: 4d54180cef347c066c7290df90caca672749774f6220947510dc492734655597.

Controls cover default-off parity, exact bytes/event binding, ID types and reuse, missing/null IDs, metadata variants, allow/deny/dry-run, invalid JSON, size/count/total ceilings, output reservation, partial writes, and corrupted/missing/surplus/reordered receipts. No Windows runtime verification is claimed by the local evidence. Hosted CI remains the integration gate.

A retained mutation helper receipt was overwritten by its supervisor; its hash fields were independently recomputed from the retained patch and source and explicitly recorded as recovery, not original historical evidence. The actual test logs remain retained; the reviewer accepted this limited evidence disposition.

Review Quorum

  • One non-building agent review on the final head (READY; carrier posted separately)
  • Every actionable finding is fixed or has a technical disposition
  • Lane classifier accepted this exact head; no delegated kernel proof is required for these paths.

The review publisher and actual reviewer are distinct roles; relay metadata does not authenticate reviewer identity. Merge only after required CI and any required exact-head delegated proof pass.

Historical first-head review record: #3403 (comment)

Independent CodeQL false-positive disposition (alerts 1364/1365): #3403 (comment)

Normal pre-push controls passed on the initial head, including workspace clippy and Linux cross-target compilation. After resource-floor stops, the successful attempt used CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0; no hook was skipped.

Final review follow-up: fb676331cd64208aebafdc2572160daaad1a7cd0

The first hosted Linux run caught the new companion flag missing from the existing describe non-selector classification. It is now listed beside the other companion outputs, preserving the S0 selector vocabulary. CodeRabbit also identified ambiguous reservation errors; the receipt call now adds cannot reserve --request-receipts-out output while preserving underlying causes and existing session-context diagnostics. Both new diagnostic assertions failed on the earlier Linux binary before the fix. The scanner dismissal rationale is retained in the repository ledger.

On the final committed source in /home/ubuntu/request-receipt, Linux verification passed: 713 CLI unit tests (two existing explicit ignores), 27 tests across five CLI integration suites, and affected-target clippy with -D warnings. Formatting and diff checks passed. An initial unit invocation overlapped source archive extraction and is excluded from proof; the accepted unit suite was rerun after source publication and complete hash validation. All 5560 source files matched this final head. Independent review reran all 19 synthetic receipt cases with no skips. Final binary SHA-256: a6f44c880bdc4634aff367a6b36cc087b1e56b09f33de41da3a96a9699b17534.

The earlier mutation evidence remains attributed to its original implementation commit; it is not relabelled as a final-head execution. Full A/B/C remains HOLD.

Review in Change Stack →

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an experimental, opt-in option to assay mcp wrap to write bounded request-to-decision receipts. Receipt capture is limited to valid tool calls and does not change policy decisions or request forwarding.
    • Receipt capture can stop at configured size or count limits, or after a write failure, while decision emission and proxy operation continue.
  • Documentation
    • Added a guide covering receipt contents, limits, failure handling, and correlation checks, including the limits of what receipts establish.

The MCP wrapper adds an opt-in, bounded NDJSON sidecar that associates valid tool-call requests with decision events. Receipt capture preserves request data and does not replace decision emission, policy handling, or forwarding.

Independent CodeQL triage at 5d1c90b0fd6c57581785b2db74df3a7870963f08 by codex/request_receipt_final_review, relayed by Rul1an.

Alerts 1364 and 1365 are false positives in the synthetic test fixture. The executable-selection dataflow is real, but does not cross a lower-trust boundary. The Rust integration harness explicitly overwrites ASSAY_BIN with Cargo's CARGO_BIN_EXE_assay path before launching this test-only fixture. Direct Python execution intentionally lets the invoking test operator select the executable under test at that operator's existing privileges. Both subprocess calls use argument lists without shell=True; request frames are passed on stdin and cannot select the executable. No application/config/trace input reaches ASSAY_BIN through this harness. shell=False alone would not make arbitrary executable selection safe; the runner-owned selection boundary is the relevant distinction.

No source fix is required. Revisit if this fixture becomes a production entry point, the Rust harness stops overriding ASSAY_BIN, or lower-trust application/config/trace input can select it. This is static triage, not new execution evidence. Reviewer identity/independence remain declarations, not authenticated by the relay account. The exact-head READY review remains unchanged. Full A/B/C remains HOLD.
