ADR Boundary Slice

  • Canonical ledger: none. No programme is active (AGENTS.md), so this is a standalone fix.
  • Slice: kernel event open-flag labels (operation_flags).
  • Builder: Claude Code (claude/ branch).
  • Reviewers: pending. One non-building review is needed on the final head.
  • Final head SHA: b011f5f5715f887664e30370ee78253eef73b656. Measured on macOS arm64 in the
builder worktree; the push ran the repository pre-push hooks.
  • ADR invariants affected: none changed. Retained v0 kernel sources keep verifying under their own
rule, the ADR-043 grid is untouched, and the v1 input format gets the same observation ceiling as v0
(unknown without context, capped at limited).

Behavior

kernel_event.v0 derives the exclusive operation flag from bit 0o400. On Linux that bit is
O_NOCTTY; O_EXCL is 0o200. So O_EXCL opens went unlabelled and O_NOCTTY opens were labelled
exclusive. A real capture showed both: flags 524481 (O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_EXCL|O_CLOEXEC) labelled
["create"], and 655616 (O_CLOEXEC|O_NOFOLLOW|O_NOCTTY) labelled ["exclusive"].

The same mapping is the admission check (validate_emitted, used by incident-package
verification). Fixing v0 in place would refuse every retained v0 source with those flags, including
the checked-in golden combined_session_3345.tar. This PR therefore:

  • Adds a corrected v1 mapping. assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 with open_operation_flags_v1
(exclusive = 0o200). open_operation_flags (v0) is unchanged and its rustdoc carries an
    erratum.
  • Dispatches validation by schema. validate_emitted picks the mapping from the event's schema.
An unknown schema still refuses with UnknownSchema.
  • Switches the producer to v1. The runner writes v1, with KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 added in
assay-runner-core. The v0 constant is kept.
  • Adds a v1 input format for incident packages. runner-kernel-ndjson-v1 has the same rules,
limits and observation ceiling as v0. Each format admits only its own schema; a mixed line refuses
    with unknown_schema.
  • Updates the docs. A new kernel-event-v1.schema.json; an erratum in the v0 schema description
(enum and const unchanged); the SPEC, the runner artifacts reference and the CHANGELOG.

The raw flags value was always correct and stays authoritative. The change is additive:
cargo-semver-checks was not run.

Decision record: Grok 4.7 High and Muse (muse-wonder-1.0) were consulted read-only and both
recommended this additive v1 over an in-place fix or a docs-only change. The non-public decision
record is kept separately.

Non-Claims

  • No scalar trust score or whole-action verdict
  • No generic identity, delegation, federation, HTTP/OAuth, or broad MCP scan
  • No provider-outcome, compliance, certification, partnership, or safe-agent claim

Also not claimed: per-call kernel causality, or any change to what operation_flags proves. The
labels remain open-intent hints, not fd-level evidence.

Test Evidence

RED

Commit bd3fcab6a adds the tests only. Against unchanged code:

  • cargo test -p assay-runner-schema --lib: the v1 test fails, left: Err(UnknownSchema) right: Ok(Filesystem).
  • cargo test -p assay-runner-core --lib openat_event: the producer test fails, left: "assay.runner.kernel_event.v0" right: "...v1".
  • cargo test -p assay-evidence --test incident_kernel_admission kernel_v: the v1 format is refused
(PackageRefused), and v0-in-v1 gives UnknownFormat where UnknownSchema is expected.

The v0 frozen-mapping controls already passed at RED.

GREEN

  • cargo test -p assay-runner-schema, -p assay-runner-core and -p assay-evidence: all pass. The
golden fixture and the existing v0 admission tests are unchanged and still pass.

  • One intentional golden update: the producer wire-format test in
    assay-runner-core/src/kernel/tests/events.rs now expects kernel_event.v1.

  • cargo clippy -p assay-runner-schema -p assay-runner-core -p assay-evidence -p assay-cli --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.

  • cargo fmt, and the pre-commit and pre-push hooks: passed.

  • Mutations, each restored afterwards; all six are caught:

    Mutation Caught by
v1 exclusive back to 0o400 yes
v1 dispatched to the v0 function yes
v0 mapping changed to 0o200 yes
v1 append bit moved yes, after adding v1_operation_flags_follow_the_linux_open_bits: the first run let this mutation survive
v1 format mapped to the v0 schema yes
    producer stamping v0 yes

Review round 1

Grok 4.7 High reviewed the first head (074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0) and returned BLOCKED.
Its findings are on this PR. Each one is fixed in b011f5f57:

  • kernel_event.v1 is now listed in docs/architecture/CLI-JSON-IDENTITIES.md; this was the ubuntu cli_json_identities failure.
  • The v1 JSON Schema examples now carry v1, with an O_EXCL example added, and the configuration crosswalk is regenerated. Locally the drift check passes on 22 files.
  • The four runner-spike-*-acceptance.sh scripts now expect the v1 schema the runner writes.
  • The SPEC admission sentence now names runner-kernel-ndjson-v1.
  • The v1 observation ceiling is now pinned: kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0. A mutation that narrows the ceiling check back to v0 fails it.

Locally green: cargo test -p assay-evidence --test incident_kernel_admission (12 tests),
cargo test -p assay-cli --test cli_json_identities, and the pre-commit and pre-push hooks.

Review Quorum

  • One non-building agent review

…nd frozen v0 mapping

RED: v1 events, the v1 producer stamp and the runner-kernel-ndjson-v1
incident format do not exist yet. v0 controls already pass.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
kernel_event.v0 derived the "exclusive" operation flag from bit 0o400,
which on Linux is O_NOCTTY, not O_EXCL (0o200). O_EXCL opens went
unlabelled and O_NOCTTY opens were labelled exclusive. The same mapping
is the admission check, so correcting v0 in place would refuse every
retained v0 archive with those flags, including a checked-in golden.

Add kernel_event.v1 with the corrected mapping (open_operation_flags_v1)
and keep the v0 function unchanged, documented as an erratum. The
producer now writes v1. validate_emitted dispatches by schema. Incident
packages admit a new runner-kernel-ndjson-v1 input format with the same
rules and observation ceiling as v0; each format admits only its own
schema. flags remains authoritative in both versions.

Decision: Grok 4.7 High and Muse (muse-wonder-1.0) both recommended
this additive v1 over an in-place fix or a docs-only change.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A mutation that moved the v1 append bit survived the earlier tests.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • New kernel event records correctly identify exclusive opens using O_EXCL; the previous label could incorrectly reflect O_NOCTTY.
    • The corrected labeling applies to v1 records, while v0 records retain their existing behavior for compatibility.
  • New Features
    • Incident packages now accept both v0 and v1 kernel event records, with each version checked against its matching schema.
  • Documentation
    • Runner references now describe both schema versions and their operation-flag mappings.

The runner now emits kernel event v1 records with a corrected exclusive flag mapping. Incident packages accept v1 alongside v0, with version-specific schema validation and the existing limits and surface mapping.

Add separate producer fixtures for O_EXCL and O_NOCTTY.

The combined fixture does not distinguish the v1 helper from the v0 helper. With both bits set, the v0 helper still emits "exclusive", so reverting decoded_open_event to open_operation_flags would pass the current assertion. Add separate producer cases and assert that O_NOCTTY produces no "exclusive" label.

Admit the network kinds emitted by the runner.

The v1 schema omits sendto and sendmsg. The runner emits both, and KernelLayerEvent::validate_emitted admits them at crates/assay-runner-schema/src/kernel_event.rs Line 220. A valid v1 network record therefore fails this published line schema. Add both kinds and their event_type mappings (6 and 7).

Non-building review of head 074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0 (merge-base 35d4cca1ccc2213398edc9d0a96c963ac0c886f5) in worktree /Users/roelschuurkes/wt-rev-3404. I did not build this change. I was consulted on the B/C decision only (additive v1 versus an in-place fix); I did not author the governing spec or this implementation.

Verdict: BLOCKED. The v0 function body, the Linux bit values, format isolation, and the v1 open-label dispatch hold. Four defects block: an unclassified production identity (CI red), a stale generated crosswalk (CI red), delegated acceptance readers that still require kernel_event.v0, and a SPEC sentence that still says kernel NDJSON is admitted only as v0.

Toolchain: rustc 1.96.0 (ac68faa20 2026-05-25) from rust-toolchain.toml channel 1.96.0. Tests used CARGO_TARGET_DIR=/Users/roelschuurkes/wt-claude-open-flags/target and CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0. Disk stayed at 7.0 GiB free. git status --short was empty after the mutations were restored. git rev-parse HEAD was still 074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0.

What held

v0 body. open_operation_flags is byte-identical to base (399 bytes), including exclusive at bit 0o400:

pub fn open_operation_flags(flags: u64) -> Vec<String> {
    let mut out = Vec::new();
    if flags & 0o100 != 0 { out.push("create".to_string()); }
    if flags & 0o1000 != 0 { out.push("truncate".to_string()); }
    if flags & 0o2000 != 0 { out.push("append".to_string()); }
    if flags & 0o400 != 0 { out.push("exclusive".to_string()); }
    out
}

Extracted with git show <rev>:crates/assay-runner-schema/src/kernel_event.rs at both SHAs. git diff 35d4cca1ccc2213398edc9d0a96c963ac0c886f5 074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0 -- crates/assay-evidence/tests/fixtures/incident_package/combined_session_3345.tar is empty. The kernel object inside that tar (objects/2e37d748bce52096fc2d39ddd9d8604b08bab61303cae6c93bf21b44727d9a82) is 36 lines, every one schema=assay.runner.kernel_event.v0. Seq 35 is flags 524481 with operation_flags:["create"], which is what the frozen v0 mapping produces for O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_EXCL|O_CLOEXEC (bit 0o200 unlabelled).

Tests that touch the golden, and what I actually ran:

  • writer_reproduces_retained_container_fixtures (crates/assay-evidence/tests/incident_container.rs:485) walks every *.tar in the fixture dir, including this one, and checks container byte round-trip. I did not run it; it is outside the allowed commands.
  • scripts/ci/verify_incident_replay.py loads combined_session_3345.tar plus the context and compares the report to combined_session_3345.report.json. The ubuntu Build + Test job never wrote /home/runner/work/_temp/incident-replay/ because the job exited 101 on cli_json_identities first (see F1). I did not get a replay comparison.

Pre-existing v0 tests I did run, all green, before any mutation: cargo test -p assay-runner-schema (33 lib + 9 parity + 15 coverage + 0 doctests), cargo test -p assay-runner-core --lib kernel (48 passed, 84 filtered out), cargo test -p assay-evidence --test incident_kernel_admission (11 passed). The v0 cases in that file include kernel_all_emitted_variants_optional_fields_and_present_empty_verify, kernel_three_surfaces_duplicate_occurrences_and_byte_identical_export_verify, kernel_surface_observation_is_unknown_without_context_and_at_most_limited_with_complete_health, kernel_rejects_invalid_schema_and_inconsistent_event_type_kind_or_fields, kernel_rejects_invalid_or_mismatched_surface_declarations, kernel_rejects_truncated_blank_bom_lone_cr_duplicate_key_and_deep_lines, kernel_enforces_selected_and_hard_source_record_and_count_limits, kernel_rejects_digest_locator_and_disclosure_mismatches, and kernel_rejects_strong_joins_and_absence_or_exhaustive_overclaims. Schema-side: open_flag_helpers_decode_access_and_operation_flags, validate_emitted_checks_schema_and_all_seven_admitted_variants, v0_keeps_its_frozen_mapping_so_existing_archives_still_verify.

Linux bits, both arches. Primary generic header, torvalds/linux tag v6.12, fetched from https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/torvalds/linux@v6.12/include/uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h. Each macro is behind #ifndef, so an arch overrides it only by defining it first:

  • line 23–25: O_CREAT 00000100 = 0o100
  • line 26–28: O_EXCL 00000200 = 0o200
  • line 29–31: O_NOCTTY 00000400 = 0o400
  • line 32–34: O_TRUNC 00001000 = 0o1000
  • line 35–37: O_APPEND 00002000 = 0o2000

Debian source linux 6.12.107-1 (trixie/sid), include/uapi/asm-generic/fcntl.h, has the same five lines. GitHub raw and kernel.org were 429.

aarch64: Debian linux 6.12.107-1 arch/arm64/include/uapi/asm/fcntl.h defines only O_DIRECTORY, O_NOFOLLOW, O_DIRECT, and O_LARGEFILE, then #include <asm-generic/fcntl.h>. The five bits under test are the generic values. The same text is on android.googlesource.com/kernel/common branch android16-6.12. I could not fetch the torvalds blob for this path (jsDelivr 403, package over 50 MB).

x86_64: Debian linux 6.12.8-1 and 6.12.107-1 arch/x86/include/uapi/asm/ has 50 files and no fcntl.h. include/uapi/asm-generic/Kbuild has mandatory-y += fcntl.h. scripts/Makefile.asm-headers says an arch that does not implement a mandatory header falls back to asm-generic, and the wrapper is #include <asm-generic/$*.h>. x86_64 therefore gets these five values from the generic header.

Format branches in verify.rs. Every base runner-kernel-ndjson-v0 site now also handles v1. Base (35d4cca1) sites and head sites:

base line role head
285 ADMITTED_FORMATS 285–286, v1 added
1411 source_byte_limit → transcript_bytes 1413–1414, same arm
1464 preflight_non_bundle_source byte check 1467–1468, same arm
1498 per-line kernel preflight 1503, v0 | v1
1810 locator scan 1815, v0 | v1
1815 kernel line framing inside that scan 1820, kernel_event_schema_for_format(...).is_some()
2156 observation ceiling Limited 2161, same helper
2474 action records, operation: input.format 2492, v0 | v1
3382 surface-order mapping 3400, v0 | v1

I searched runner-kernel-ndjson under crates/assay-evidence at both SHAs. The head has no v0-only arm left. The ceiling for a raw kernel input is ObservationCeiling::Limited at verify.rs:2171, reached for any format the helper recognizes, so v1 and v0 share it. unknown without context is derive_surface_result at verify.rs:2562–2567 and does not branch on format.

Format isolation. kernel_event_schema_for_format (verify.rs:2362–2368) maps v0→KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA and v1→KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1. validate_kernel_event_value (verify.rs:2379–2381) returns ResolveRefError::UnknownSchema when the line schema is not that value. verify.rs:1747 maps that to IncidentReason::UnknownSchema, which serde renames to unknown_schema (incident_package/mod.rs:44–53). Test kernel_v0_format_keeps_its_frozen_open_labels_and_formats_do_not_mix (incident_kernel_admission.rs:817–834) passed on the control run: v1 line in the v0 format and v0 line in the v1 format both come back UnknownSchema.

Schema JSON. Parsed both files. Structural diff is exactly five fields: $id, title, description, properties.schema.const, properties.operation_flags.description. I did not run a draft 2020-12 meta-schema validator (jsonschema is not installed; I did not install one). The v1 document declares $schema https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema and is an object schema. The examples are identical to v0, including "schema": "assay.runner.kernel_event.v0". That identity is what breaks the generated crosswalk (F2).

Public surface. Added: KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 and open_operation_flags_v1 in assay-runner-schema (kernel_event.rs:15, :98; re-exported lib.rs:67–71); KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 in assay-runner-core (kernel.rs:17; re-exported lib.rs:29). Changed: KernelEventValidationError::UnknownSchema display text is now kernel event schema must be {v0} or {v1} (kernel_event.rs:128). validate_emitted accepts v1. The builder writes KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 (kernel.rs:225). No item was removed. I did not run cargo-semver-checks. This is additive at the type level; the display string of an existing #[non_exhaustive] variant changed. KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA in runner-core still equals assay.runner.kernel_event.v0 while the builder writes v1. The new doc comment (kernel.rs:14–16) says the unversioned constant is the pre-v1 schema and KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 is what the builder writes. The unversioned name reads as the schema the crate emits; that reading is now wrong, and the doc comment is what corrects it at the definition. In-repo the only writer uses V1. A caller that still stamps KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA emits v0, which the v0 format still admits.

Helper seam. examined_unit still defaults operation to KERNEL_FORMAT (runner-kernel-ndjson-v0) at incident_kernel_admission.rs:120. single_line_kernel_package_in_format overwrites that field with the format argument (:199) and sets the inventory format from the same argument (:250). raw_kernel_bytes_package (:289) still hardcodes KERNEL_FORMAT and is not used by the v1 tests. A v1 package from the helper is not left on the v0 token.

CHANGELOG. The Unreleased fixed entry matches the code: v1 exclusive is O_EXCL 0o200, v0 stays frozen, incident packages gain runner-kernel-ndjson-v1 with the same ceiling, flags stays authoritative. It does not mention the identity inventory or the acceptance scripts.

F1 open — kernel_event.v1 is an unclassified production identity

crates/assay-runner-schema/src/kernel_event.rs:15 defines KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 = "assay.runner.kernel_event.v1". docs/architecture/CLI-JSON-IDENTITIES.md:130 records only assay.runner.kernel_event.v0 | kernel event stream entry.

Ubuntu Build + Test (ubuntu-24.04) on this head, job 120018307222, failed crates/assay-cli/tests/cli_json_identities.rs:578 every_production_identity_is_classified:

these identities ship but are in neither block of docs/architecture/CLI-JSON-IDENTITIES.md:
  assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 (crates/assay-runner-schema/src/kernel_event.rs:15)
test result: FAILED. 14 passed; 1 failed
error: test failed, to rerun pass `-p assay-cli --test cli_json_identities`

The job then had no /home/runner/work/_temp/incident-replay/ artifact. That is the upload step after the exit 101, not a golden-replay mismatch I observed.

Smallest fix: add assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 beside v0 in that non-document block.

F2 open — generated crosswalk is stale, and the v1 schema examples are why

kernel-event-v1.schema.json examples still set "schema": "assay.runner.kernel_event.v0" (same bytes as the v0 file; the structural diff does not touch examples). The crosswalk generator counts files whose records declare that schema (scripts/docs/generate-configuration-vocabulary-crosswalk.py, table column files). Adding the v1 file makes a second file carry kernel_event.v0.

Lint (pre-commit) job 120016802798, hook docs-generated-drift, and the same drift inside docs-generated-drift-self-test (gate-reads-working-tree wanted exit 0 and got exit 1):

--- docs/architecture/CONFIGURATION-VOCABULARY-CROSSWALK.md
-| `assay.runner.kernel_event.v0` | 1 |
+| `assay.runner.kernel_event.v0` | 2 |

Generated outputs match their generators failed with exit 1 on the same head. Kernel Matrix Summary failed because LINT_RESULT=failure.

Smallest fix: put assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 in the v1 schema examples, then regenerate the crosswalk so the v0 file count stays 1 and v1 is its own row if the generator sees it.

F3 open — delegated acceptance readers still require v0

KernelLayerBuilder writes KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 (kernel.rs:225). openat_event_stamps_v1_and_labels_o_excl_not_o_noctty passed and asserts record.schema == "assay.runner.kernel_event.v1". These scripts cargo build -p assay-cli from the tree and then require v0 on every kernel event:

  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-kernel-only-acceptance.sh:276
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-kernel-policy-acceptance.sh:198
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-gemini-google-genai-acceptance.sh:292
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-openai-agents-kernel-policy-acceptance.sh:252

The three-run wrappers call those scripts. runner-spike-openai-agents-kernel-policy-hidden-write-three-run-determinism.sh calls the OpenAI three-run wrapper. .github/workflows/runner-spike-delegated.yml runs them under gates=all. lane-check on this head already says Expected delegated gate: all and failed because no proof pack exists (lane-check/proof: delegated proof required: gates=all). I did not execute the scripts: this machine is Darwin, and each script exits 40 before the assertion when uname is not Linux. The assertion is a literal compare against assay.runner.kernel_event.v0, and the producer test above shows the writer emits v1, with no rewrite between kernel.rs:225 and apply_to_archive (kernel.rs:343).

Grep classification for git grep -n "kernel_event.v0\|KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA" 074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0 -- crates scripts:

  • The four acceptance scripts: readers that must accept v1. They do not. F3.
  • scripts/ci/test_runner_counter_publication.py:13: reads the kernel-only script as text to execute a bash loop. Fine.
  • assay-cli/.../logs.rs:122, assay-runner-core/src/policy.rs:293,315,336: one-line stubs so a test archive has a kernel line to count. Fine.
  • kernel/tests.rs:28 GOLDEN_EXEC_TRUE_EMPTY_RUN_ID_LINE: used only for a byte-length budget. v0 and v1 are the same length. Fine.
  • incident_kernel_admission.rs v0 literals, and the golden tar: retained v0 fixtures. Fine.
  • KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA definitions and the v0 match arm in verify.rs:2364: the v0 constant, still correct. The unversioned name is discussed above.
  • cli_json_identities does not contain the literal; it discovers it. That miss is F1, outside this grep.

F4 open — SPEC still says kernel NDJSON is admitted only as v0

docs/architecture/SPEC-Incident-Package-v1.md:138 adds runner-kernel-ndjson-v1. Lines 142–147 say every v0 rule applies to v1 and that a crossed line refuses with unknown_schema. Line 149 then says: "Runner kernel-layer NDJSON is admitted only as explicit runner-kernel-ndjson-v0 lines". That sentence excludes the format verify.rs:286 admits. Later sentences that name only v0 (framing at 175, wire contract at 198–202, operation= at 266, surfaces at 402–406, ceiling at 750–753) are the rules the paragraph at 142 says apply to v1. The "only" sentence is the one that contradicts the code.

docs/reference/runner/schemas-overview.md:30 still lists assay.runner.kernel_event.v0 as the kernel-layer archive contract and was not in this diff. artifacts-v0.md now says the runner writes v1, then the examples at lines 152 and 172 still show schema: kernel_event.v0.

Mutations (restored; after-control green)

Control before: the three allowed suites, all passed.

  1. kernel_event_schema_for_format v1 arm returned None. kernel_v1_format_admits_corrected_open_labels failed: left: (PackageRefused, Some(UnknownSchema)), right: (PackageVerified, None). The v0 mix test stayed green. Restored.
  2. verify.rs:2161 narrowed back to input.format == "runner-kernel-ndjson-v0". All 11 incident_kernel_admission tests passed. The ceiling equality is in the head (the helper), and this suite does not go red if that one site is narrowed again. Not a separate blocker: the head does apply Limited to v1. A test that asks for adequate on a v1 kernel input is what would pin it. The existing ceiling test builds with KERNEL_FORMAT (v0) only.
  3. validate_emitted used open_operation_flags for v1 when event_type != 1. v1_operation_flags_follow_the_linux_open_bits and v1_labels_o_excl_as_exclusive_and_leaves_o_noctty_unlabelled stayed green. operation_flags_for is applied only in the openat arm (kernel_event.rs:207), so the other arm is unused.
  4. v1 arm called open_operation_flags. v1_labels_o_excl_as_exclusive_and_leaves_o_noctty_unlabelled failed: left: Err(InputShape), right: Ok(Filesystem). Restored.

After-control: cargo test -p assay-runner-schema --lib v1_labels_o_excl passed. git status --short empty. HEAD unchanged.

CI on this head, outside the three local suites

Failed, and inside what I examined: Build + Test (ubuntu-24.04) (F1), Lint (pre-commit) and Generated outputs match their generators (F2), Kernel Matrix Summary (rollup of the lint failure), lane-check / lane-check/proof (no delegated proof; F3 is why a proof run would also fail), review-record-check (no record on this head yet).

Pending when I looked, not treated as green: Rustdoc (deny warnings), Build + Test (windows-latest), CodeRabbit, and other in-progress CI jobs. I did not re-read those logs.

… tests

Review of the previous head (BLOCKED) found four places still on v0 and
one unpinned rule:
- CLI-JSON-IDENTITIES.md lists assay.runner.kernel_event.v1;
- the v1 JSON Schema examples carry the v1 schema (plus an O_EXCL
  example), and the generated configuration crosswalk is regenerated;
- the four runner-spike acceptance scripts expect the v1 schema the
  runner now writes;
- the SPEC admission sentence names runner-kernel-ndjson-v1;
- the observation ceiling is pinned for the v1 format as well
(narrowing it back to v0 now fails a test).

Non-building review of head b011f5f5715f887664e30370ee78253eef73b656 (merge-base 35d4cca1ccc2213398edc9d0a96c963ac0c886f5) in worktree /Users/roelschuurkes/wt-rev-3404. I did not build this change. I was consulted on the B/C decision only; I did not author the governing spec or this implementation.

Verdict: READY. The four blockers from 074391c30bc8377a473cb64d5b3a6b811d2587b0 are fixed on this head, and the fix does not add a new defect I could show. Merge still waits on lane-check/proof (delegated Linux proof, gates=all), which I did not run, and on the CI aggregate, which was still pending when I wrote this.

Toolchain: rustc 1.96.0 (ac68faa20 2026-05-25), host aarch64-apple-darwin. Tests used CARGO_TARGET_DIR=/Users/roelschuurkes/wt-claude-open-flags/target and CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0. df -h / started at 1.3 GiB free, under the 6 GiB stop, so I removed only target/debug/incremental (about 6 GiB; that cache is unused when incremental compilation is off) and rechecked: 7.2 GiB free before the first compile, 6.4 GiB free after the last one. git rev-parse HEAD stayed b011f5f5715f887664e30370ee78253eef73b656. git status --short was empty after the mutation was restored with git checkout.

Delta from the blocked head is nine files: the identity row, the crosswalk, the SPEC admission sentence, the v1 schema examples, the four acceptance scripts, and a v1 ceiling test. Production Rust between those two SHAs did not change.

F1 fixed — identity inventory

docs/architecture/CLI-JSON-IDENTITIES.md:131 records assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 in the not-cli-documents block, next to the v0 row at line 130. The producer constant is KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA_V1 at crates/assay-runner-schema/src/kernel_event.rs:15, and KernelLayerBuilder writes it at crates/assay-runner-core/src/kernel.rs:225.

cargo test -p assay-cli --test cli_json_identities
test every_production_identity_is_classified ... ok
test result: ok. 15 passed; 0 failed; 0 ignored; 0 measured; 0 filtered out; finished in 0.46s

F2 fixed — schema examples and generated crosswalk

docs/reference/runner/schema/kernel-event-v1.schema.json:19 consts assay.runner.kernel_event.v1. A search of that file for kernel_event.v0 returned no matches. The examples, including the new open at seq 6 (flags 193 = O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_EXCL, operation_flags create+exclusive), carry v1. docs/architecture/CONFIGURATION-VOCABULARY-CROSSWALK.md:119 says 55 further record types, and line 154 adds assay.runner.kernel_event.v1 with count 1. v0 stays at count 1 (line 153).

bash scripts/ci/check-docs-generated-drift.sh
generated artifacts reproduce from their generators (22 files).

F3 fixed — acceptance readers

The four scripts now require the schema the producer writes:

  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-gemini-google-genai-acceptance.sh:292
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-kernel-only-acceptance.sh:276
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-kernel-policy-acceptance.sh:198
  • scripts/ci/runner-spike-openai-agents-kernel-policy-acceptance.sh:252

Each compares event.get("schema") to assay.runner.kernel_event.v1. decode.rs:70 labels opens with open_operation_flags_v1.

Search: rg -n 'kernel_event\.v0' crates scripts .github docs/reference. scripts/ and .github/ returned no matches. A separate search of those two trees for kernel_event in .github also returned no matches. I did not find a remaining check that would fail current producer output for still saying v0.

What that search did find, and why it does not fail the v1 producer:

  • KERNEL_EVENT_SCHEMA at kernel_event.rs:12 is the frozen v0 identity. Incident admission still accepts it only on runner-kernel-ndjson-v0 (verify.rs:2364).
  • The v0 lines in incident_kernel_admission.rs and the v0 fixture in kernel_event.rs:309 exercise that retained path.
  • policy.rs:293, :315, :336 and logs.rs:122 assign a one-line stub so a test can count a kernel line. They do not call KernelLayerBuilder and do not compare the schema.
  • kernel/tests.rs:28 is used only as a byte length (four_event_byte_cap_run_id). The v0 and v1 schema strings are the same length.
  • docs/reference/runner/schema/kernel-event-v0.schema.json and the v0 examples in artifacts-v0.md:152 are the older contract. artifacts-v0.md:74 and :96 say the writer now emits v1.
  • docs/reference/runner/schemas-overview.md:30 still lists only v0 in the orientation table. That page does not define the schema and nothing in this change fails a build on it. docs/reference/runner/index.md:36 already links the v1 schema file.

I did not run the Linux delegated proof. lane-check/proof on this head is fail, delegated proof required: gates=all (run 39839494534). That proof is outside this review.

F4 fixed — SPEC admission sentence

docs/architecture/SPEC-Incident-Package-v1.md:149-150 now says kernel NDJSON is admitted only as explicit runner-kernel-ndjson-v0 or runner-kernel-ndjson-v1. The v1 row is at line 138. Lines 142-147 say every v0 rule applies to v1 except the schema string and the operation_flags mapping. verify.rs:2362-2366 maps each format token to its own schema constant.

Ceiling pin

kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0 (incident_kernel_admission.rs:588-590) calls the same helper as the v0 test, with format runner-kernel-ndjson-v1. The cap is verify.rs:2161: any format kernel_event_schema_for_format recognizes is reduced to ObservationCeiling::Limited at line 2171.

Control, before the mutation, full suite:

cargo test -p assay-evidence --test incident_kernel_admission
test kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0 ... ok
test result: ok. 12 passed; 0 failed; 0 ignored; 0 measured; 0 filtered out; finished in 18.04s

Mutation: line 2161 narrowed from kernel_event_schema_for_format(&input.format).is_some() to input.format == "runner-kernel-ndjson-v0". Locator parsing at line 1820 was left on the helper. Result:

test kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0 ... FAILED
test kernel_surface_observation_is_unknown_without_context_and_at_most_limited_with_complete_health ... ok
thread 'kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0' panicked at crates/assay-evidence/tests/incident_kernel_admission.rs:724:5:
assertion `left == right` failed
  left: PackageRefused
 right: PackageVerified
test result: FAILED. 1 passed; 1 failed; 0 ignored; 0 measured; 10 filtered out

Line 724 is the case that records limited for a v1 kernel surface when the operator asked for adequate. Without the v1 cap, that assessment no longer matches. The v0 test stayed green. Restored with git checkout -- crates/assay-evidence/src/incident_package/verify.rs. After restore both ceiling tests passed, and git status --short was empty.

Other suites

cargo test -p assay-runner-schema
test result: ok. 33 passed (lib); 9 passed (claim_support_parity); 15 passed (coverage_descriptor); 0 doc-tests
cargo test -p assay-runner-core --lib kernel
test result: ok. 48 passed; 0 failed; 0 ignored; 0 measured; 84 filtered out; finished in 0.26s

openat_event_stamps_v1_and_labels_o_excl_not_o_noctty passed in that run.

CI at this head

Required contexts from .github/rulesets/main-required-ci-contexts.json:

  • CI — pending (job 120043571189). Not green. Build + Test on ubuntu-24.04, macos-latest, and windows-latest had passed; the aggregate had not finished. Inside the same workflow as the identity test I re-ran locally. I did not treat the pending aggregate as a pass.
  • lane-check/proof — fail, delegated proof required, gates=all. Outside this review. I did not run it.
  • host-capability-check — pass.
  • review-record-check — fail on the run that existed before this record (job 120036347203). That run cannot see the record posted with this comment.

git diff --check was clean.

Finding dispositions before merge (head b011f5f5715f887664e30370ee78253eef73b656):

  • Round 1 F1-F4 (identity doc, v1 schema examples and crosswalk, four acceptance scripts, SPEC sentence): fixed in b011f5f57. The round-2 record on this head marks all four fixed.
  • Round 1 unpinned v1 observation ceiling: fixed with kernel_v1_surface_observation_has_the_same_ceiling_as_v0. The reviewer's mutation fails it.
  • Round 2 note, docs/reference/runner/schemas-overview.md: the Active Contracts table lists only kernel_event.v0. Follow-up PR, docs only, after this merge.
  • Delegated Linux proof gates=all: run 39842629878 on this head, all five gates success.
