HelpScout's links to conversations look like https://secure.helpscout.net/conversation/{ID}/{number}/, and they're all over Slack, Trac, and docs. Imported conversations keep HelpScout's number, but not its ID, which is HelpScout's own. So swapping in FreeScout's address, as people have been told to, opens nothing, or a different conversation.

WPOrgSite now redirects those links to the conversation the HelpScout one was imported as:

  • /conversation/{ID}/{number}, a HelpScout link with FreeScout's address, is a new route. The ID says which conversation it is; the number is ignored.
  • /conversation/{ID} is core's route, which would answer with a 404. A middleware redirects it first, when there's no FreeScout conversation with that ID. HelpScout's IDs are 9 or 10 digits, far beyond FreeScout's, so they don't stand for one. Viewing a conversation costs one primary-key lookup more.
  • Agents are redirected once they're logged in, and only to a conversation they may see; otherwise it's a 404, so the link doesn't tell them where it is.
  • The IDs are kept in WPOrgSite's own wporgsite_helpscout_conversations table, so links keep working once the importer and its tables are gone. Its migration copies the importer's table in one INSERT … SELECT. The conversations the importer imports from then on, like the Data mailbox's and the Plugins mailbox's new ones, are added through the eloquent.saved event of its model. The model is named rather than used, so nothing breaks once the importer is removed.

Testing: npm run freescout:test from environments/ (487 tests). HelpScoutLinksTest covers both link forms (the full one with a trailing slash and HelpScout's folderId), the 404 for an agent without access, and both ways IDs reach the table. Each test fails with the middleware, the access check, or the importer listener taken out.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • HelpScout conversation links using FreeScout’s address now redirect to the corresponding imported conversation.
    • Both supported link formats are handled automatically.
    • Access is limited to signed-in agents who can view the conversation; unavailable or unauthorized conversations return a 404 error.
    • Existing HelpScout conversation links remain usable after importer data is removed.
  • Documentation

    • Added setup and usage guidance for HelpScout conversation links and access requirements.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for redirects, access restrictions, and preservation of imported links.

HelpScout's links, `secure.helpscout.net/conversation/{ID}/{number}/`, are
all over Slack, Trac, and docs. Imported conversations keep HelpScout's
number but not its ID, so swapping in FreeScout's address opened nothing,
or the wrong conversation.

WPOrgSite now redirects `/conversation/{ID}/{number}` and `/conversation/{ID}`
to the conversation the HelpScout one was imported as, for agents who may see
it. It keeps its own table of HelpScout IDs, copied from the importer's and
added to as the importer saves more, so links keep working once the importer
is removed.

📝 Walkthrough

WPOrgSite now stores mappings between HelpScout IDs and imported FreeScout conversations. It handles HelpScout links through a dedicated route and middleware, and redirects authenticated agents when they can view the mapped conversation.

Changes: HelpScout Conversation Links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist imported conversation mappings
freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/Services/HelpScoutLinks.php, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/Database/Migrations/*, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/Providers/WPOrgSiteServiceProvider.php, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgHelpScoutImport/README.md
The service records mappings and copies existing importer records into a new table. The provider records mappings when importer models are saved. The importer setup guidance now describes retaining those mappings after importer-table cleanup.
Register and handle HelpScout links
freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/Http/*, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/Providers/WPOrgSiteServiceProvider.php, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/tests/HelpScoutLinksTest.php, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/README.md, freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgSite/module.json, freescout.wordpress.net/AGENTS.md
The module registers a dedicated route and middleware for core conversation routes. Both use the mapping service to resolve links; the controller returns 404 when no accessible conversation is found. Tests cover both link forms, access restrictions, and mapping synchronization. The module documentation and version were updated.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8a5b1

HelpScout links for some imported conversations could fail to redirect if an import runs while the migration is applied. The window is narrow and the fix is small, so merge is low risk once the copy is made idempotent.

🟡 Changes recommended

The migration has a race-prone non-idempotent copy, and importer mapping write failures can leave permanent missing redirects.

Make the importer copy idempotent.

If an importer save occurs after the destination table is created and before copy_imported() runs, the saved listener can insert the same helpscout_id. The plain INSERT then fails on the destination table's primary key. A retry skips the copy because the table already exists.

Create the table only when it is missing, then always call copy_imported(). Skip IDs already present in the destination table. The importer schema makes conversation_id non-null, so no null-row filter is needed.
