The plugins team reviews plugins in HelpScout with a browser extension, which this brings to FreeScout. The plugin directory's side landed separately in #1052.

  • WPOrgPluginReview:
    • A sidebar panel with a conversation's latest plugin review: its details, flags (UPD, TRM, OWN) with the team's replies to copy, its issues, and the plugin as it is now on WordPress.org.
    • Only in the Plugins mailbox and, with the Teams module, only for members of the "Plugin…" teams.
    • With the API & Webhooks module, GET /api/conversations takes reviewPluginId: an indexed lookup of a plugin's review conversations, for the review tools.
  • WordPress.org's copy of conversations (wporg_helpscout): FreeScout's webhook now keeps it up to date, as HelpScout's did. The HelpScout import can point it at the imported conversations once a mailbox moves.

Testing: run npm run freescout:setup, then open the five sample plugin reviews in Plugins. Then run npm run freescout:test.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Plugin Review panel in FreeScout with review details, flags, issues, ownership checks, plugin information, and suggested replies.
    • Plugin directory conversations can be handled through FreeScout, including review updates and upload confirmations.
    • Added tools to view and search conversations in the configured helpdesk.
    • Added controls to switch imported conversations from Help Scout to FreeScout, with progress and retry status.
    • Plugin-directory listings now show clearer review-status badges and reviewer assignments.
  • Improvements
    • Conversation copies and review information stay in sync across the plugin directory and FreeScout, including updates after imports and conversation merges.
    • FreeScout webhook events include relevant conversation updates and thread details, with oversized events retried without threads.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds FreeScout conversation copies and mailbox cutover, plugin-review indexing and a reviewer sidebar, webhook payload handling, and Plugin Directory support for FreeScout links and upload-confirmation replies.

Changes: FreeScout conversation copies

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conversation events and stored copies
freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgWebhooks/*, api.wordpress.org/public_html/dotorg/freescout/webhook.php, api.wordpress.org/public_html/dotorg/freescout/common.php, environments/plugin-directory/bin/database-tables.sql
Webhook payloads include refreshed conversation data, event-specific fields, selected threads, replacement identifiers, and size handling. WordPress.org stores or deletes copies and metadata under locks and transactions.
Imported conversation copy cutover
freescout.wordpress.net/Modules/WPOrgHelpScoutImport/*, api.wordpress.org/public_html/dotorg/freescout/replace-copies.php, environments/freescout/mock-api/index.php
The import module tracks mailbox copy state, batches replacements, handles merges and deletions, and supports starting, resuming, and catching up copy jobs.

Plugin Review

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6bd03

Replacing conversation copies during a mailbox cutover can race with HelpScout webhook writes and leave a stale old copy. Several earlier minor and moderate review concerns also remain open. Resolve the locking issue before merge.

Return early when delete_emails() gets no IDs.

With an empty $ids array, this function builds IN (), which is invalid SQL. The current callers guard against this: write_email checks $replaced, and log_email always passes $id. The helper is shared, though, and a future caller with no IDs would cause a SQL error.

137-156: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a caller-level transport-error test

The new test checks only FreeScout::api(). It does not call Upload_Handler::update_review_email() or check the warning that reports the failure. A regression in the caller can therefore restore 0: NULL while this test still passes.

Add a test that lets users/me succeed, makes the thread request return WP_Error, calls update_review_email(), and asserts that the warning includes Connection timed out.

Clarify the import-event clause.

The phrase “without the events live email fires” is hard to parse. Rewrite it as “without firing the events that live email triggers.”

Base sends() on whether the copy was already switched, not only on the current mailbox.

sends() checks only the switch state of the mailbox the conversation is in now. The wording "an imported one's only once its mailbox switched" in the docblock does not hold after an agent moves the conversation.

Trigger:

  1. Mailbox A is switched.
  2. WordPress.org's copy of imported conversation X is a FreeScout copy. It has helpdesk meta and names its HelpScout conversation.
  3. An agent moves X to mailbox B, which is not switched yet.

Result:

  • refresh() passes B's ID to the wporgwebhooks.copy filter.
  • sends() returns false, so the conversation.moved event and every later event leave out email.
  • The copy keeps mailbox A, the old status, and no new plugin or theme mentions.
  • HelpScout's webhook also skips X, because is_moved_to_freescout() finds the name.
  • The copy stays stale until B switches. At that point plan_copy_replacement() returns skip, and new events update the copy again.

Fix: also return true when the mailbox recorded at import time has a switch state. ImportedConversation.mailbox_id stores that mailbox.

Exclude upload confirmations from reviewer feedback.

Upload_Handler::reply_in_freescout() sends an automated upload confirmation as a FreeScout message thread. This mapping retains that type. get_feedback() then returns the confirmation as the latest reviewer message after an author uploads an update. Full history also labels it as reviewer feedback. Exclude these automated threads before selecting reviewer feedback, or carry a distinct marker through the mapping. FreeScout documents message as a user reply. (api-docs.freescout.net)

The plugin directory's review tools link to HelpScout, and upload
confirmations reply there. Once FREESCOUT_PLUGINS_MAILBOX_ID,
FREESCOUT_API_KEY and FREESCOUT_USER_ID are defined, the review tools link
to FreeScout instead, and confirmations of uploads whose review
conversation is FreeScout's are replied there. The abilities' plugin status
reads reviewers' feedback from FreeScout's conversations too.

Split out of WordPress#1035, unchanged, so that one can concentrate on the reviewers'
tools.

The plugins team reviews plugins in HelpScout with a browser extension.

Adds WPOrgPluginReview, a sidebar panel with a conversation's latest plugin
review, in the Plugins mailbox and, with the Teams module, for members of the
"Plugin…" teams: its details, flags (UPD, TRM, OWN) with the team's replies to
copy, its issues by the team's short names, and the plugin as it is now on
WordPress.org, from a new dotorg/freescout/plugin-review.php. It indexes which
replies are review emails, with wporgpluginreview:index to index them again,
and warns when a reply names another author's Review ID.

WPOrgWebhooks' events now carry what webhook.php needs to keep the copy of
conversations, wporg_helpscout, as HelpScout's webhook did. The HelpScout
import can point the copy at the imported conversations once a mailbox moves,
after which HelpScout's webhook leaves them alone.

Adds five plugin reviews to the local sample data, and the admin to Plugin
Reviews.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
FreeScout's minifier reads a regex literal right after an arrow as a
division and fails on the review script. Match the Review ID line with
String#match() instead, which Prettier leaves alone too.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…y're imported

WPOrgPluginReview listened for an event the HelpScout import no longer
fires, since the copy sync stopped needing it. It doesn't need it
either: the sidebar reads and indexes a conversation whose replies were
written without their hooks the first time its review is shown, and
`wporgpluginreview:index` does the rest in bulk. So the importer stays
as it is on trunk, the module only reindexes on moves, and the cutover
steps say to run the command after the last import.

…relative time.

"Updated 1 day ago" becomes "(1d)", with the full date in the tooltip, to fit the narrow sidebar.
The local environment's recorded panel uses the same format.

…nd aligned links.

Each plugin or theme now shows its name across the full width, then, unless it's published, a status line with an icon
and the status in words (the close reason, and the reviewer while in review), instead of a badge; delisted themes get
no icon. The slug line ends with the last update and the links: Gandalf, for released plugins and published themes, the
page on WordPress.org, once approved, and the download, which most have, at the right edge.

The Gandalf URL and what makes a plugin released move to common.php, shared with the Plugin Review panel.

Lists show those in review first and rejected ones last. The local mock panel uses the new format, with a sample
plugin in each review status.

…d URL from the ones to copy.

A button after each plugin's download link adds its URL to the header's Copy X URLs, or removes it once it's there.
URLs added this way stay until removed. WPOrgSidebar triggers wporgsidebar:panel once a panel loads, for the
buttons to be added.

- Match the Plugin Admins team's name, and log when a team isn't found.
- Keep other modules' tags and snooze icons out of the hidden subject.
- Mark only the previous conversations core shows in the sidebar.
- Only flag the ownership check when every check ran and none passed.
- Copy each marked subject at its own place in the selection.
- Keep a page's download URL when it can't get a lock, and let tabs settle before refreshing.
- Link the WordPress.org page only for plugins and themes that have one.
- Round short ages up to the next unit, like 1y instead of 12mo.
- Cache the worklist counts of agents who only see assigned conversations.
- Read the worklist members once per page.
- Name close reasons as the plugin directory does, and share the status labels between the panel and the sidebar.
- Update the README's rate limit, and tidy comments and types.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Close the hidden subject span only when it was opened, parsing the subject once per row.
- Keep the statuses of plugins and themes in one table, and label any status in the panel.
- Look up close and rejection reasons through one helper.
- Check whether a plugin is released once per item.
- Reuse is_folder(), inline markCheck(), and merge duplicate CSS rules.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Two tests write tags onto conversations, so they need the Tags module's
tables, which only the paid module creates. CI doesn't install it, so
the tests create the tables themselves, as the HelpScout import's do:
before each test's transaction, and dropped once it's rolled back.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Mythos 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Read the `Review: CHANGESNOTMADE|WRONGFORMAT` lines in the reply editor as
ReviewId does, so a follow-up naming another author gets the warning too.
- Name the local sample data's team Plugin Admins, as My Cases looks for it.
- Index review emails again after the import that follows the cutover.

The header button copies the URLs of the plugins in review the agent has open,
but an old review of a released plugin added its latest stable ZIP too. Those
can still be added from the sidebar.

The panel took the name after the subject's last colon, so a closure of
"Acme: Forms" showed "Forms". It now reads the name as the conversation's
subject does, after the first one following the kind.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…URLs.

Approved plugins aren't released until they're committed to SVN, so the
header still collected their last uploaded ZIP. Only plugins that are new
or pending review are collected now.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The index of review emails keeps each one's plugin ID, from the P0TDX…HGN
of its Review ID line, and the API's conversation list takes it as
`reviewPluginId`: an indexed lookup of a plugin's review conversations,
whatever their status, for the review tools.

From #4.

The stylesheet and scripts load for reviewers only, instead of on every
page for every agent. Without the Teams module, reviewers are who can see
the plugins team's mailbox, as Reviewers' docblock says, instead of
everyone.
