Albert and Plotinus would be a perfect match. Triggering plotinus within Albert could be starting point.
Plotinus is a library that adds a searchable command palette to any GTK+ 3 application, similar to the Atom and Sublime Text Command Palette feature (or Unity HUD).

I fully agree with you. I'd even use this extension. This extension would be awesome.
But technological reasons make it impossible to write a plotinus extension. Plotinus is a wrapper-library around GTK3 to steal the information of the menu-bar and display it within the process, which uses the GTK3 library. Plotinus has no API to provide albert the neccessary information about possible menu items of the GTK3-application.
@tristan-k Please ask the Plotinus-devs first to make Plotinus even compatible to albert.
@ManuelSchneid3r As long as Plotinus does not have any API, this issue can be safely closed.

It now does.
@p-e-w When looking at the API description, I don't see a way to integrate plotinus into albert yet. IIUC, you can retrieve the current list of available commands (GetCommands) and you can trigger the plotinus window to pop up with a selected list of commands (ShowCommands). But there is no way send a command to the DBus API, which will get invoked!? Right?
If that's the case, the plotinus API still fails to match albert's minimum requirement. Albert invokes actions.
I dont like the idea of abusing albert for this. It feels like a violation of the unix philosophy. Plotinus works fine without albert. However if you want it you are free to implement it.

If I understand this correctly plotinus is an injected launcher for every gtk3 app. How exactly do you want
to combime this with albert?
ManuelSchneid3r commentedon Oct 28, 2017
Can somebody please describe a usecase + workflow?
ManuelSchneid3r commentedon Mar 21, 2018
Apart from the fact that I still dont understand what this extension would do, is there anybody interested in this extension at all?
rabin-io commentedon Mar 21, 2018
I think I get it, it's like using albert as in app luncher as well, by exposing the application menu/command/shortcuts to albert via Plotinus, e.g.
geditand write some text.sowill give you in the menu the optionsort linescorrect me if i'm wrong
ManuelSchneid3r commentedon Mar 22, 2018
Hmm okay. But why not just directly invoke plotinus instead?
rabin-io commentedon Mar 22, 2018
"one luncher to rule them all" I guess :)
tristan-k commentedon Mar 22, 2018
@rabin-io Just what I had in mind. Thanks for answering.
