Let the phone answer a find with a destination - #22
codemode-mcp op find WORDS --out-file PATH and the secrets server's find_references with env_file and var now reach the phone. They go out as one described item, like op read --describe. A Mac that answers first lists the matches and writes nothing, as before. On the phone, the owner enters or AutoFills the value the words describe, and it is written to the file. op find prints {"written": PATH}, and find_references answers written with the path and variable.
A find without a destination gives up after 30 seconds, down from 5 minutes. Its error tells the program to retry with a destination so the phone is asked.
The server guidance and the find_references description tell agents to describe the item when they only need the value written. They should use op find only when they need the reference itself, such as for a template.
docs/operations.md, docs/design.md and op find --help describe the new behavior.
Why
A find goes only to Macs, because the phone app cannot search 1Password. In a T3 thread, the owner was away from every Mac, but a companion MacBook Air was paired. The agent's op find sent a prompt to that Mac that nobody saw and waited out the 5-minute timeout. The phone was never asked, even though the agent only needed values that the owner could have entered there.
Verification
New integration test a_find_with_a_destination_is_entered_on_the_phone_while_a_companion_mac_waits. The owner is away and the companion Mac's prompt stays up. The test checks that op find --out-file writes the value entered on the phone with mode 0600, that the phone saw the description, and that find_references with env_file/var writes APP_TOKEN=….
cargo test passed in three full runs. One earlier run failed a_phone_that_answers_first_takes_the_other_prompts_down, a timing-dependent test that passes when run alone.
cargo clippy --all-targets and cargo fmt are clean.
No test covers the 30-second limit, because the test would take 30 seconds.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
op find can now send a search with an output destination to a phone, where you can select or enter a value to save. Values are written to the specified file with private permissions.
Searches with an output destination can also save a phone-entered value to an environment-file variable. If a Mac returns matches first, they’re shown and nothing is written.
Bug Fixes
Searches without a destination fail after 30 seconds if no Mac responds and explain how to continue on a phone.
Documentation
Updated guidance clarifies phone and Mac search behavior and approval steps.
A find goes only to Macs, since the phone app cannot search 1Password.
With the owner away and a companion Mac paired, an agent's op find
waited the full 5 minutes on that Mac's unseen prompt and never reached
the phone.
op find --out-file and find_references with env_file and var now go
out as a description, so a Mac answers with the matches and the phone
has the owner enter the value, which is written there. A find without
a destination gives up after 30 seconds, and its error points at the
phone. The guidance tells agents to describe the item when they only
need the value, and to find a reference only when they need it.

Walkthrough
The change adds destination-based value entry to op find and find_references. It also updates ordinary find timeout behavior, error guidance, and documentation.
Changes: Phone-assisted reference lookup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Ordinary find timeout and routing src/companion/find.rs, docs/design.md, docs/operations.md
Ordinary finds use a 30-second first-answer wait and append phone-search guidance to relevant failures. The documentation distinguishes ordinary searches from searches with a destination.
find_references accepts env_file and var together and reports a write result when a value is entered. Guidance describes destination-based entry and Mac search behavior.
CLI output path and integration test src/main.rs, tests/gateway/harness.rs, tests/gateway/companion.rs, tests/gateway/phone.rs
op find accepts output-file options and writes returned values. Gateway tests check phone entry, file permissions, and env-file writing.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Clean up the test output directory.
This directory is separate from the harness state directory. rig.stop() does not remove its token and env files, so each run leaves credential-like test output in the system temp directory. Use a per-test cleanup guard so assertion failures also remove the files. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Based on learnings, Rust integration tests must clean up per-test artifacts.

About the cleanup note on tests/gateway/phone.rs: leaving it as it is. The new test uses temp_state_dir() the same way the existing CLI tests do, such as the signing.p12 test in tests/gateway/companion.rs, and the files hold only fixed test strings. Cleaning up temp directories should be one change across all the tests, not part of this PR.
