📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request standardizes sensor feature macros, adds AS7341 spectral and flicker sensing, introduces shared fixed-point FFT processing, and extends noise sensing with cached RMS and peak-frequency readings.

Changes

Sensor support and signal processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sensor contracts and build configuration
lib/Sensors/Sensors.h, lib/Sensors/Sensors.cpp, lib/Shared/Config.h, sam/platformio.ini, sam/src/Commands.h, sam/src/SckBase.h
Sensor guards now use SCK_WITH_*. Noise peak frequency and AS7341 sensor types are registered. Sensor IDs and indexes now use uint16_t. The AS7341 dependency is pinned.
Shared fixed-point FFT engine
sam/src/SckFFT.*, sam/src/SckTables.h
A fixed-point FFT engine supports spectrum, dominant-bin, modulation-depth, RMS, and min/max calculations for noise and AS7341 samples.
AS7341 acquisition and routing
sam/src/SckAux.*
AS7341 startup, shutdown, adaptive gain, normalized spectral readings, cached flicker capture, and FFT-based metrics were added. Flicker output now uses peak-to-peak values.
Noise processing and runtime integration
sam/src/SckUrban.*, sam/src/Commands.cpp, sam/src/SckBase.cpp, sam/src/SckList.cpp
Noise sampling now uses shared FFT processing, configurable timing, cached readings, RMS, weighted levels, and peak frequency. Runtime sensor paths use the renamed feature guards and wider iteration types.

1002-1040: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not cache a weighted noise result as if it were sensor-independent.

The early return skips the switch that applies A, C, or Z weighting. After a dBA request, a dBC, dBZ, or peak-frequency request inside the 500 ms interval returns data derived from the prior request. Cache raw samples or an unweighted spectrum, then derive the requested metric on every call.

28-32: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Document or bound the fixed RAM cost of the FFT buffers.

scratchData is a function-local static. It is shared by every Sck_FFT<N> object of the same N and stays allocated for the whole program. With scaledSource in the header, each Sck_FFT<512> instantiation reserves about 3 KB of SRAM, plus the caller buffers (source and readingFFT in Sck_Noise). The shared buffer is also not reentrant, so a second concurrent caller of the same instantiation would corrupt results.

Both current callers run in a single context, so behavior is correct today. Add a short comment that states the single-caller assumption, or move the scratch buffer into the class so ownership is explicit.

♻️ Option: make the scratch buffer an explicit member
-    static int16_t ALIGN4 scratchData[SAMPLE_NUM * 2];
+ // Not reentrant: one call at a time per Sck_FFT<N> instance.
+    int16_t *scratchData = scratchBuffer;

Add the member in sam/src/SckFFT.h:

private:
    int16_t ALIGN4 scratchBuffer[SAMPLE_NUM * 2];

43-50: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Software pow calls for squaring on a CPU without an FPU. Both sites square values with pow(x, 2). On the SAMD21 this calls a software double routine inside per-bin loops; plain multiplication gives the same values at much lower cost.

  • sam/src/SckFFT.cpp#L43-L50: square scratchData elements with int32_t multiplication instead of pow.
  • sam/src/SckFFT.cpp#L68-L75: square magnitude[i] with a multiplication of a double copy instead of pow.

- Around line 80-86: Preserve existing SensorType ordinals by assigning stable
explicit values and appending the new noise members without renumbering prior
entries; apply this consistently at both affected declarations in
lib/Sensors/Sensors.h:80-86 and lib/Sensors/Sensors.h:289-302. Add a schema
version to Configuration and update SckBase::loadConfig() to migrate compatible
EEPROM records or reset incompatible ones before accepting them based on valid.

In `@sam/src/SckAux.cpp`:
- Around line 3075-3103: Track whether any getReadingAtGain call succeeds in the
spectral acquisition flow, and return false when all attempts fail before
normalizing or publishing spectralReadings. Preserve the existing gain-retry and
saturation behavior, while ensuring failed attempts do not publish zero or stale
values as a successful capture.
- Around line 3020-3025: Check the boolean result of Adafruit_AS7341::begin
before proceeding in the surrounding initialization function; return false
immediately when it fails, and only enable the metric and set started to true
after successful initialization.
- Around line 3154-3182: Remove the averaging and centering of flickerSource
before sckFFT.computeSpectrum(); pass the raw fifoSamples values through so
flickerMod retains the DC reference used by modulationDepth(). Keep
dominantBin() and the existing flicker frequency/modulation calculations
unchanged.

In `@sam/src/SckFFT.cpp`:
- Around line 62-67: Preserve a valid mean-level reference for modulationDepth
by preventing getFlickerReading from removing the DC offset before
computeSpectrum, or by supplying the measured mean converted to the same
post-window FFT scale used for magnitude[0]. Ensure computeSpectrum’s DC-bin
scaling remains consistent, and document that modulationDepth requires this
reference.

Migrate EEPROM configuration before changing SensorType ordinals.

Configuration::sensors is a positional FlashStorage(eepromConfig, Configuration) array. SckBase::loadConfig() accepts records based only on valid, so these additions remap saved settings to different sensors and change the Configuration layout.

Keep existing ordinals stable and add a schema version with migration or reset for incompatible records.

3084-3109: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Allow retry after a failed gain fallback.

Line 3085 updates lastReadSpectrum after any successful, potentially saturated capture. If every later lower-gain read fails, Line 3104 clears getReadingOK, but the fresh timestamp prevents another acquisition until SCK_AS7341_INTERVAL_MS expires. Reset lastReadSpectrum before returning failure.

Proposed fix

+            lastReadSpectrum = 0;
+            return false;

Prevent indefinite spectral-read blocking.

readAllChannels() performs two delayForData(0) calls. The pinned driver treats 0 as an unlimited wait. If the sensor never reports data-ready, updateSensors() blocks and cannot process later sensors. Use the asynchronous read API with an application timeout, or use a driver version with bounded waits.

3027-3027: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep started true while another AS7341 metric is enabled.

Line 3027 clears started whenever any one metric stops. If multiple AS7341 metrics are enabled, the remaining metrics still use the device but the next start() calls adafruit_as7341.begin() again. Clear started only after marking the requested metric disabled and confirming that no enabled metric remains.

Rename the range feature guard.

This header still uses WTIH_RANGE, while the change standardizes feature macros to SCK_WITH_*. When SCK_WITH_RANGE is enabled, the range declarations remain excluded, but the matching runtime path expects Sck_Range. The range-enabled build can fail to compile. Rename both range guards in this header to SCK_WITH_RANGE.

Proposed fix
-#ifdef WTIH_RANGE
+#ifdef SCK_WITH_RANGE

Apply the same change around the Sck_Range declaration.
