feat: harden cross-language output parity and release tooling - #8
Conversation
- generate help, usage, and doctor text from fixtures/messages.json for TypeScript, Rust, and Python instead of hand-duplicating strings - add and cover it in every implementation - emit non-ASCII JSON consistently (Python now uses ensure_ascii=False) and replace Unicode control characters in human-readable output - add shared CLI fixtures for help, version, all doctor setup kinds, non-ASCII agent names, and control-character sanitizing - verify generated assets are current via npm run check:generated - build Python packages into dist-python instead of sharing dist with tsc - test JS and Rust on macOS and Windows, and Python on 3.10 and 3.13 - fix the npm README banner, refresh the native binary matrix, and check awk and tr in install.sh

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[medium] String.prototype.replace interprets $ patterns in the agent name, breaking TS/Rust/Python parity.
With a string pattern, JS still expands $&, $', $` and $$ in the replacement. agenthint init 'x$&y' prints AI_AGENT=x{agent}y in TS, but AI_AGENT=x$&y in Rust and Python. agenthint init "a\$'b" pastes the rest of the template into the value. Use a replacer function so the value is inserted literally:
| return MESSAGES.init.output.replace("{agent}", sanitizeForDisplay(normalized)); | |
| return MESSAGES.init.output.replace("{agent}", () => sanitizeForDisplay(normalized)); |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in e522c7c: init now uses a replacer function (() => sanitizeForDisplay(normalized)) so $ patterns are inserted literally. Covered by fixture init keeps dollar patterns in custom names. Verified TS/Rust/Python match for a$&b.

[low] Same $-pattern expansion in the fallback hint.
AGENTHINT_FORCE=1 AGENTHINT_AGENT='a$&b' agenthint doctor prints hint: Set AI_AGENT=a{agent}b ... in TS, but a$&b in Rust and Python.
| const hint = hints[agent] ?? MESSAGES.doctor.fallbackHint.replace("{agent}", agent); | |
| const hint = hints[agent] ?? MESSAGES.doctor.fallbackHint.replace("{agent}", () => agent); |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in e522c7c: fallback hint uses replace("{agent}", () => agent) and text formatter sanitizes (sanitizeForDisplay(setup.hint)), JSON keeps raw hint per SPEC Output Safety. Covered by doctor text keeps dollar patterns in hints.

| return json.dumps(result.to_dict(), indent=2) | ||
| return json.dumps(result.to_dict(), indent=2, ensure_ascii=False) |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[medium] ensure_ascii=False, together with the forced strict UTF-8 stdout in cli.py, crashes the CLI on non-UTF-8 env values.
On POSIX, Python decodes an invalid byte in AI_AGENT with surrogateescape, giving 'a\udcffb'. Before this change --json escaped it as "a\udcffb". Now print(format_json(result)) raises UnicodeEncodeError: surrogates not allowed. The traceback exits with 1, which callers read as "no agent detected". I reproduced this by running the CLI with env {b"AI_AGENT": b"a\xffb"}. doctor --json (line 143) fails the same way.
Also, sys.stdout.reconfigure(encoding="utf-8") without errors= resets errors to strict. Under the C/POSIX locale (UTF-8 mode, where the default is surrogateescape), --explain and doctor now crash on the same input too.
Options: keep ASCII escaping for JSON, pass errors="backslashreplace" or "replace" to reconfigure, or treat surrogates (category Cs) as unprintable in sanitize_for_display.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in e522c7c: added _normalize_text (surrogateescape -> U+FFFD) applied to env names/values in detect_agent, plus errors=replace on stdout reconfigure. --json/--explain/doctor --json with invalid UTF-8 now exit 0 with U+FFFD. Covered by test_cli_survives_invalid_utf8_env. Follow-up c728c7c also fixes the non-env lone-surrogate fallback to emit U+FFFD instead of ?.

| pyproject = Path(__file__).resolve().parents[2] / "pyproject.toml" |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
[low] package_version() may read an unrelated project's pyproject.toml.
parents[2] is only the agenthint repo root in the source layout. If the package is installed with pip install --target myproj/deps, or vendored as myproj/vendor/agenthint, parents[2] is myproj. agenthint --version then reports whatever version = "..." appears first in that project's pyproject.toml. Prefer importlib.metadata.version("agenthint") first. Or, before trusting the file, check that it declares name = "agenthint".

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[low] execFileSync("npx.cmd", ...) fails with spawnSync npx.cmd EINVAL on Windows.
Since the CVE-2024-27980 fix (Node 18.20.2 / 20.12.2+, including the lts pinned in mise.toml), Node refuses to spawn .cmd/.bat files without shell: true. This change was meant to support Windows, but npm run generate and npm run check:generated still fail there. Pass shell: true on win32, or run biome through process.execPath with its JS entrypoint.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in e522c7c: generate.mjs runs Biome via process.execPath + resolved @biomejs/biome/bin/biome entrypoint instead of npx/npx.cmd, avoiding the CVE-2024-27980 EINVAL on Windows. Follow-up c728c7c applies the same process.execPath fix to check-generated.mjs which still hardcoded node.

[low] The setup hint is sanitized even in JSON output, which contradicts the new SPEC "Output Safety" section.
The SPEC says JSON output should rely on standard JSON escaping. In all three implementations, the shared setup-hint helper is also used by doctor --json. With AGENTHINT_FORCE=1 and AGENTHINT_AGENT set to a<ESC>b, the JSON shows "agent": "ab" but "hint": "Set AI_AGENT=ab ...". The agent value inside the hint no longer matches the agent field, so a JSON consumer cannot use the hint verbatim. Sanitize only in the text formatters (TS src/doctor.ts, Rust format_doctor, Python format_doctor).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in e522c7c: _setup_hint/setupHint now return raw hints for JSON; only text formatters sanitize (format_doctor in TS/Rust/Python). Covered by doctor json escapes control characters without sanitizing vs doctor text sanitizes control characters fixtures.
- use replacer functions for init and doctor hint interpolation so `$`` patterns in agent names are inserted literally (JS only; Rust and Python already insert literally) - normalize surrogate-escaped env values to U+FFFD in Python so invalid UTF-8 no longer crashes --json/--explain/doctor with exit 1 - read env with vars_os and lossy conversion in Rust so invalid UTF-8 panics are avoided, matching Node's U+FFFD behavior - verify name = "agenthint" before trusting a vendored pyproject.toml for --version - run Biome through its Node entrypoint instead of npx.cmd so generate and check:generated work on Windows - keep setup hints unsanitized in doctor JSON and sanitize only in the text formatter, as SPEC Output Safety describes - add shared fixtures and regression tests for all of the above

Review: verified second push addresses all 6 prior threads.
npm run check green locally. LGTM. Non-blocking nits: package_version regex narrow (single-quote/indent), TS display handles Cc only vs Python Cc+Cs, check-generated hardcodes node, _normalize_text fallback yields ? for non-env lone surrogates. |
- sanitize lone surrogates (Cs) in TS display for parity with Python - allow single quotes, indent and trailing comments in package_version - map non-surrogateescape lone surrogates to U+FFFD instead of '?' - use process.execPath in check-generated for pinned toolchains
