Welcome to the OpenMaya wiki!

Here you will find an overview over the system, how it works and why I created it this way.

I like rendering and I really appreciate the work of smart peope who are able to write renderers. But very often I was annoyed by the fact that I first have to build my scene in maya, export is as obj, load it into the renderer, maybe write some scripts, try to create lights, assign renderes own shaders and render over commandline or in the renderers own interface. So my idea was to create a frameworks which enables to start the renderer from within maya and is able to do a lot of the basic work which is needed to implement a renderer.

And indeed after some years, I now have an framework wich can create a the structure of a new renderer plugins with one script. All the basic elements are copied from a template repository and it can be compiled and loaded into maya. Of course it does not do anything if you hit render, but hey, it works ;)

With this basic plugin a working version can be implemented quite fast. Of course it depends a bit from the renderers API. But if it is well designed, meshes, lights and cameras can be created and a renderer can be started within one or two days.

I released this as an OpenSource project because I got so much input from others and use a lot of OpenSource software and I wanted to give the community back somthing that can be useful.

Here you find an overview of the frameworks structure: Overview
