My name is Ian.
I am a Data Scientist at the Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships, developing the Vermont Data Collaborative. I previously studied Statistics at the University of Vermont, with minors in Psychology and Mathematics.
I am passionate about using data to understand communities, human behavior, and complex systems through statistical analysis, data engineering, and visualization. In my current role, I develop data-driven tools that integrate public datasets to support rural communities across Vermont. My work focuses on building data pipelines, interactive dashboards, and accessible visualizations that help communities explore topics such as demographics, housing, zoning, infrastructure, and environmental conditions.
- Programming & Data: Python, R, SQL, SAS, Stata
- Statistical Analysis: Regression methods, hypothesis testing, experimental design, statistical modeling, exploratory data analysis
- Data Engineering: ETL workflows, FastAPI, DuckDB, geospatial data processing, public data integration
- Visualization & Applications: React.js, FastAPI, ggplot2, Altair, Pydeck, Plotly, Recharts, Power BI
- Building scalable data systems with Python, FastAPI, and DuckDB
- Developing interactive web applications with React.js and the Mantine UI framework
Outside of data, I enjoy exploring the history of mathematics and statistics, especially how ideas in these fields have evolved over time. I am currently reading The Lady Tasting Tea by David Salsburg. I also enjoy cycling, listening to jazz, and collecting vintage mechanical wristwatches.
