🚨 Severity: HIGH

💡 Vulnerability:

1. Missing Rate Limiting: The rate limiting middleware was explicitly commented out in app.ts, leaving the API vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) and brute-force attacks on sensitive endpoints like /auth/login and /auth/nonce.
2. Dependency Conflict: The project used @fastify/jwt v10+ which requires Fastify v5, but the project uses Fastify v4. This caused the application to crash on startup if dependencies were freshly installed, acting as a potential availability vulnerability.

🎯 Impact:

• Attackers could flood the API with requests, causing service degradation or outage.
• Attackers could brute-force authentication endpoints without restriction.
• The application was unstable due to invalid dependency versions.

🔧 Fix:

1. Enabled Rate Limiting: Uncommented and configured the rate limit registration in backend/src/app.ts.
2. Fixed Dependencies: Downgraded @fastify/jwt to ^8.0.0 to match the Fastify v4 ecosystem.
3. Added Testing: Created a regression test suite to verify that 429 Too Many Requests is returned when limits are exceeded.

✅ Verification:
Run the new security test:

cd backend
npm test src/__tests__/security/rate_limit.test.ts

The test sends 110 requests (limit is 100) and asserts that the final requests return a 429 status code with the correct error message structure.
