ui: Tracks and Groups and Clips in full-height dock columns - #1088
Moves the side panels from split frames into dock columns, using craft-ui's shared docking.
Layout
Edit: Tracks and Groups is a full-height dock column on the left (168 pt), and Clips one on the right (230 pt). The MIDI editor sits under the session view, between the two docks. Memory Locations and Undo History float, as before.
Mix: Tracks and Groups is a dock column on the left, beside the mixer.
Panels dock into columns:
dropped on a group's middle, a panel joins it as a tab;
on its top or bottom third, it stacks a new group;
on a column edge, it makes a new column;
at an empty window edge, it makes a new dock.
Floats dropped over the session view stay floating.
Saved layouts
Saved settings carry a docking_version. Settings from before dock columns (no version) load with the new default layouts, once, with every other setting kept. Window configurations reset the same way when recalled.
Reopening panels
A panel with no recorded place, or whose recorded anchor is gone, reopens at its default place:
Tracks and Groups and Clips go back into their dock, and a missing dock is rebuilt at its width;
the MIDI editor goes under the session view;
Memory Locations and Undo History float at their default rectangles.
Also
Pins every craft-libs crate (craft-ui, craft-docpath, craft-media, craft-update) at craft-libs main db19c373, which contains the docking work (craft-libs#268, a0916808) and the updater fixes main uses.
docs/control-protocol.md describes the default layout, drop rules and reopening; ROADMAP.md and docs/ui-parity.md are updated.
Tests
default_layouts_put_the_side_lists_in_full_height_dock_columns: the Edit and Mix shapes, widths and drawn rectangles.
a_tab_dropped_on_a_dock_group_joins_it_in_the_middle_and_stacks_below_in_the_lower_third: real pointer drags at points taken from the drawn rectangles.
a_panel_without_a_recorded_place_reopens_at_its_default_place and a_recorded_place_whose_anchor_is_gone_reopens_at_its_default_place.
a_floating_list_closed_beside_its_shown_dock_reopens_floating: a recorded floating place wins over the shown dock.
split_frame_settings_load_as_the_dock_defaults_and_dock_layouts_round_trip, and settings_from_before_dock_columns_load_with_the_default_layouts (config).
The Edit window docks Tracks and Groups (168 pt) at its start edge and Clips
(230 pt) at its end edge, with the MIDI editor under the session view between
them; Mix docks Tracks and Groups at its start edge. Panels dragged to an
empty window edge make a dock there.
Saved preferences and window configurations carry docking_version. Split-frame
layouts saved without it load as the new defaults, keeping every other
setting. A list with no recorded place reopens in its dock group, making the
dock again at its side and width when it is gone.
Pins craft-ui, craft-docpath and craft-media to craft-libs#312.
Edit and Mix layouts now use dock columns for side panels. Panel opening uses dock-specific fallback locations. Saved layouts include a version, and older layouts load the new defaults while retaining other settings. Tests cover docking behavior, layout migration, and configuration recall.
Edit places Tracks and Clips in side docks, with MIDI below the session view. Mix places Tracks beside the Canvas. Panel opening uses an existing dock when available, or a panel-specific fallback location. Dock styling enables new dock zones. Tests and documentation describe the layouts and placement behavior.
UiState and configuration snapshots record the docking layout version. Loading layouts without a current version resets Edit and Mix docking data while retaining other settings. Configuration recall resets outdated layouts, validates both docking layouts, and preserves the current configuration list and theme.
storytold/soundcraft#1035: Moves panel docking to craft-ui’s shared Workspace and DockCommand, which this PR continues to use.
storytold/soundcraft#1058: Integrates movable panels and saved locations, which this PR extends with dock columns and versioned migration.

Merge Risk: Low · up to bc680
The shipped dependency revision differs from the one described in the PR. Confirm the intended revision and correct the description or pin; no docking failure was established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to bc680
The layout migration preserves unrelated preferences, and replacement layouts are validated before use. No introduced security defect was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because the shared dependency update also reaches software-update handling, whose upstream changes could not be fully verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The direct migration affects local UI preferences and Edit/Mix workspace state. The dependency update has broader reach into native software-update handling, so its potential host-level consequences cannot be bounded to panel rendering from the available upstream evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Persisted JSON is bounded to 4 MiB before deserialization. Workspace acceptance retains upstream validation and application rules protecting the document view, bounding hidden panels, checking hidden restoration locations, and excluding Edit-only visible panels from Mix.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Settings saves retain strict checking of the existing source, exclusive temporary-file creation, file synchronization, and rename-based replacement. Handled write failures attempt temporary-file cleanup. These are existing containment controls, not newly added protections or proof of crash durability or concurrent-writer coordination.

Explanation
The title names the Tracks, Groups and Clips panels and full-height dock columns, which match the main change in docking.rs, the docs, and the PR objectives. It is specific about the primary change, but it does not mention the Edit and Mix default layouts, the saved-settings versioning, or the craft-ui pin, so it covers only part of the changeset.

- Around line 274-279: In the panel visibility flow, check whether the hidden
panel has a restorable saved location using `restores` before applying
`default_dock`; when it does, restore it with `set_visible` without an anchor so
its floating rectangle takes precedence. Add a regression test that reopens a
floating Clips panel while the End dock remains visible and verifies the
floating rectangle is restored.
