crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs now scans every location Steinberg documents for VST3 plug-ins, in the documented priority order (user, then global, then application-local), so plug-ins installed outside the previously hard-coded folders are found.

  • Linux/BSD: added /usr/lib64/vst3, /usr/local/lib64/vst3, and $APPFOLDER/vst3 (beside the executable).
  • Windows: user directory (%LOCALAPPDATA%/Programs/Common/VST3) now comes first; added the 32-bit /Program Files (x86)/Common Files/VST3 location via COMMONPROGRAMFILES(X86), and $APPFOLDER/VST3; COMMONPROGRAMW6432 is preferred so a 32-bit process still gets the 64-bit common-files path.
  • macOS: added /Network/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and the app bundle’s Contents/VST3, resolved only when the executable sits in Contents/MacOS so standalone binaries do not scan an unrelated parent directory.
  • Duplicate common-files paths are collapsed, and VST3_PATH handling is unchanged.
  • os_search_paths is now private; a new search_paths helper takes all process state (environment values, executable path) as arguments, making every platform layout testable on any host.

Added regression tests covering the documented order and edge cases for each platform.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • VST3 plugin scanning now checks additional standard locations on macOS, Unix, and Windows.
    • Plugins installed alongside the application can now be discovered, with macOS support for apps launched from the standard bundle location.
    • Windows scanning now prioritizes the 64-bit common-programs path and avoids duplicate search locations.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates VST3 search path construction for macOS, Windows, and Unix. It adds executable-derived locations and platform-specific paths, changes Windows common-files selection, and makes os_search_paths private.

Changes: VST3 search paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform search path construction and validation
crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs
os_search_paths now delegates to a helper that builds paths from process state and platform inputs. The helper adds platform-specific locations and executable-derived paths. Tests cover ordering, missing inputs, duplicate Windows paths, and macOS bundle layout conditions.

Explanation

The title "vst3: Add missing scan paths" matches the main change. The PR adds VST3 plug-in scan locations for Linux/BSD, Windows, and macOS, and it makes os_search_paths private with a new search_paths helper. The title names the primary purpose, but it does not mention the Windows COMMONPROGRAMW6432 preference or the visibility change. Those details are not required for a title.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Make the Unix path test independent of the test environment.

unix_paths_cover_documented_locations_in_order uses os_search_paths, which reads the real std::env::current_exe(). This works on a Unix host, but the test is not host-independent. On a Windows host, the test still runs and the executable directory contains a \ separator. The path then still compares equal, so the test passes. The test therefore depends on process state. Use search_paths with a fixed executable path, as in the other platform tests. This also removes the need for os_search_paths to be called from tests.

Proposed fix

-        let exe = std::env::current_exe().unwrap();
+        let exe = PathBuf::from("/opt/soundcraft/bin/soundcraft");
         let global_and_app = vec![
             PathBuf::from("/usr/lib64/vst3"),
             PathBuf::from("/usr/lib/vst3"),
             PathBuf::from("/usr/local/lib64/vst3"),
             PathBuf::from("/usr/local/lib/vst3"),
-            exe.parent().unwrap().join("vst3"),
+            PathBuf::from("/opt/soundcraft/bin/vst3"),
         ];
         let mut with_home = vec![PathBuf::from("/home/u/.vst3")];
         with_home.extend(global_and_app.iter().cloned());
-        assert_eq!(os_search_paths(Os::Unix, Some("/home/u".into()), None, None), with_home);
-        assert_eq!(os_search_paths(Os::Unix, None, None, None), global_and_app);
+        assert_eq!(search_paths(Os::Unix, Some("/home/u".into()), None, None, None, Some(exe.clone())), with_home);
+        assert_eq!(search_paths(Os::Unix, None, None, None, None, Some(exe)), global_and_app);

First-pass review notes (automated; combined from specialist angles: tests, docs and text). Please treat as suggestions and verify before acting.

Summary: crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs now scans all Steinberg-documented VST3 locations in priority order (user, then global, then application-local) on Linux/BSD, Windows, and macOS, so plug-ins outside the previously hard-coded folders are found, with duplicate common-files paths collapsed and VST3_PATH handling unchanged.

Logical units:

  • Linux/BSD: added /usr/lib64/vst3, /usr/local/lib64/vst3, and $APPFOLDER/vst3
  • Windows: user directory first, added 32-bit COMMONPROGRAMFILES(X86) location and $APPFOLDER/VST3, preferring COMMONPROGRAMW6432
  • macOS: added /Network/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and bundle Contents/VST3 when executable is in Contents/MacOS
  • Refactor: os_search_paths made private, new search_paths helper takes environment values and executable path as arguments
  • Regression tests for documented order and edge cases per platform

Findings:

  • [tests] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, unix_paths_cover_documented_locations_in_order: uses os_search_paths and real std::env::current_exe() instead of the deterministic search_paths helper, deriving the expected app path from the same host state, so it is non-hermetic and cannot test a fixed executable or the None case. Fix: call search_paths(Os::Unix, ..., Some(PathBuf::from("/opt/SoundCraft/soundcraft"))) and add a None case.
  • [tests] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, default_search_paths / os_search_paths: the COMMONPROGRAMW6432 fallback to COMMONPROGRAMFILES, and reading of COMMONPROGRAMFILES(X86) and current_exe(), are not tested; all new tests bypass this wrapper. Fix: add tests covering this wrapper.
  • [docs] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, os_search_paths visibility change: pub fn became private with no CHANGELOG entry, deprecation note, or migration note for downstream users. Fix: add a CHANGELOG entry noting the breaking change and that default_search_paths() is the supported entry point.
  • [docs] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, os_search_paths: doc comment still says locations are "given the relevant environment values", but the function now also reads COMMONPROGRAMFILES(X86) and current_exe() internally. Fix: update the doc comment to list those hidden inputs and state that it is not a pure function of its arguments.
  • [docs] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, search_paths: six positional Option<PathBuf> parameters are undocumented and easily swapped at call sites. Fix: document each parameter in order in the doc comment, or group them in a named struct.
  • [docs] crates/vst3-host/src/scan.rs, search_paths platform branches: new locations (/Network/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3, /usr/lib64/vst3, COMMONPROGRAMFILES(X86), app-local folders) and the Windows user-first priority change have no in-code source or rationale. Fix: add in-code source or rationale for these locations and the priority change.

Overlaps: None listed.

Verdict: Needs changes. (1) Make the Unix test hermetic via search_paths with fixed and None executable cases. (2) Test the default_search_paths / os_search_paths wrapper, including the COMMONPROGRAMW6432 fallback and environment/executable reading. (3) Add a CHANGELOG entry for the os_search_paths visibility breaking change.
