This PR removes the test-time WebMCP shim and aligns the codebase with native browser implementations of the WebMCP API. The changes reflect that WebMCP is now natively supported in Chromium builds used by Playwright, eliminating the need for a polyfill.

Key Changes

  • Removed shim infrastructure: Deleted packages/playwright/src/shim.ts and related test files (shim.spec.ts). The shimSource() function and WebMCPOptions.shim configuration option are no longer needed.

  • Updated API references: Changed all references from navigator.modelContext to document.modelContext throughout the codebase, aligning with the WebMCP specification and native browser implementations.

  • Simplified fixture configuration: Removed the shim option from WebMCPOptions in the Playwright fixture. The fixture now assumes native WebMCP support is available.

  • Updated tool input shape handling: Created new input-shape.ts module to manage executeTool() input format (object vs JSON string), replacing the shim's dual-format support with explicit configuration.

  • Refactored prompt API: Updated prompt-api.ts to work with native tool-use protocol, removing shim-specific workarounds and aligning with Chromium's AIPromptAPIToolUse implementation.

  • Updated fake language model: Modified fake-language-model.ts to implement the tool-use protocol that Chromium uses, with proper LanguageModelToolCall and LanguageModelToolSuccess classes.

  • Renamed ESLint plugin: Changed package name from eslint-plugin-webmcp to @swissspidy/eslint-plugin-webmcp for npm publication.

  • Added quality rules: Introduced new linting rules in quality.ts for tool annotations and titles (annotations-explicit, tool-title-missing).

  • Updated exposure rules: Refined exposure.ts rules to better align with API security constraints and added support for WebSocket origins.

  • Removed recorder wrapping of provideContext: The recorder now only wraps registerTool() and executeTool(), as provideContext() is not part of the native API surface.

  • Updated documentation and examples: Changed all code examples and documentation to use document.modelContext instead of navigator.modelContext.

Implementation Details

  • The fixture now relies entirely on native WebMCP support in Chromium, with the --enable-features=WebMCP flag passed by Playwright configurations.
  • Tool input shape is now explicitly managed through the ExecuteToolInputShape type, allowing tests to specify whether inputs should be objects or JSON strings.
  • The CDP WebMCP domain integration remains available for recording calls made by Chrome's own agent.
  • All snapshot collection and linting now assumes native API availability, simplifying the codebase significantly.

The test-time shim is gone: every suite now runs against the browser's own
document.modelContext, which Playwright's Chromium provides behind
--enable-features=WebMCP (the flag is in every Playwright config and in
webmcp-audit). Chrome Beta stays as an informational CI job. The pre-spec
provideContext, clearContext and unregisterTool are no longer recognised
anywhere, and navigator.modelContext is no longer read.

executeTool input is decided from the browser version (JSON string below
Chrome 155, object from 155 on) instead of trying the object and retrying
with a string, because a refused attempt is still an invocation on the CDP
domain and was recorded as one. Contracts keep only annotation hints
declared true, since builds differ in which false defaults getTools() fills
in; `debugging` joins the hints toolHints() reads.

The exposed-to-wildcard rule folds into exposed-to-secure-origins: the API
has no wildcard, so "*" makes registerTool() reject rather than expose the
tool to everyone. iframe-allow-tools is gone, since a frame without
allow="tools" cannot register at all. declarative-autosubmit-sensitive now
reads the autocomplete attribute it was meant to, and declarative schemas
take the label text as a parameter description the way Chrome does.

The promptApi harness and the fake LanguageModel follow Chromium's tool-use
protocol: tool declarations without execute, tool-call items from prompt(),
tool-response items back. The hand-written WebMCP typings are replaced by
the webmcp-types package.

The ESLint plugin is published as @swissspidy/eslint-plugin-webmcp, since
eslint-plugin-webmcp is taken on npm. The pending changesets are collapsed
into one initial-release changeset, and CHANGELOG.md ships with each package.

Six more webmcp-lint tool rules, which the plugin, the fixture and the audit
all run: description-placeholder (TODO, lorem ipsum, ...), annotations-valid
(the specification's four hints with boolean values; MCP hints and the CDP
domain's spellings are named), exposed-to-origin-only (a path, query or
credentials in an exposedTo entry is ignored by the API), and the opt-in
tool-name-style, tool-title-missing and annotations-explicit.

Six source-only ESLint rules, for what never survives to runtime:
no-legacy-api (navigator.modelContext, window.agent, provideContext,
clearContext, unregisterTool), no-unknown-tool-properties and
no-unknown-options (dictionary members the API silently drops),
require-execute, valid-event-name (toolchange, toolactivated, toolcancel)
and no-unbound-method (a destructured registerTool throws).

The recommended config now leaves opt-in rules out; `all` includes them.

A placeholder description is not a WebMCP problem, and the removed API
surface is not worth a rule now that nothing here recognises it.

annotations-valid, no-unknown-tool-properties, no-unknown-options,
require-execute and no-unbound-method are gone: with webmcp-types installed
TypeScript rejects every one of those mistakes, and the audience is
TypeScript projects. valid-event-name stays, since the typings' string
overload lets a misspelt event name through.

In `@packages/core/README.md`:
- Line 58: Update the Puppeteer launch configuration in the example to include
the Chromium argument enabling WebMCP, so collectFrame can access
document.modelContext and discover imperative tools.

In `@packages/core/src/contract.ts`:
- Line 51: Update the annotation-copying loop in the contract construction flow
to preserve false-valued custom keys while still omitting false values only for
the standardized default-false annotation keys. Define or reuse the recognized
key set near the loop, and keep existing behavior for non-false values.

In `@packages/core/src/rules/exposure.ts`:
- Line 25: Update the exposedTo validation flow around the filter to parse each
entry with the URL parser before applying SECURE_ORIGIN and LOCAL_ORIGIN checks,
and reject parser failures with SecurityError consistently with
exposedToOriginOnly. Ensure malformed https:// and wss:// entries cannot pass
exposedToInsecure or allow registration to proceed.

In `@packages/eslint-plugin/src/api-usage.ts`:
- Around line 40-41: Restrict event-name validation in both the call and
property-assignment visitors to receivers identified as ModelContext. Resolve
the receiver before invoking validEventName, and skip validation when it is
absent or not a ModelContext instance, preserving existing
addEventListener/removeEventListener method filtering.

In `@packages/eslint-plugin/src/jsx.ts`:
- Around line 104-109: Update staticText() to recursively collect descendant
static text, not just direct JSXText children, matching browser label-text
derivation. During static extraction, build an id-to-text map for static
elements, then resolve each whitespace-separated aria-labelledby reference from
that map before deriving the field description so nested label content populates
prop.description.
- Line 173: Remove autocompleteValue === DYNAMIC from the field-wide dynamic
suppression condition in the JSX ESLint adapter, while retaining the other
dynamic checks so computed autocomplete values do not suppress missing-label or
missing-parameter-description findings.

In `@packages/playwright/README.md`:
- Around line 11-15: Add the missing `@playwright/test` import for defineConfig in
the playwright.config.ts documentation example so the copied configuration loads
correctly.

exposed-to-secure-origins runs every entry through the URL parser first, so
an entry that does not parse ("https://[invalid") is reported instead of
slipping past the scheme check; isPotentiallyTrustworthy() is exported.
Contracts drop a false value only for the hints the API defaults to false,
and keep any other key as declared. valid-event-name only judges listeners
on a receiver known to be document.modelContext, since any element may fire
its own tool* events. The JSX extractor collects nested label text, resolves
aria-labelledby, and no longer lets a computed autocomplete hide label
findings. Two README snippets gain the flag and the import they needed.
