[Entity-Service] Replace the 000020-000027 KB chain with one migration for the KB manager tables - #3054
On dev-app-csm-portal, a fresh database (a new compose volume, a new environment, or CI migrating from empty) cannot finish migrating. With #3047 applied, make migrate and the compose migrate service both stop in the legacy phase:
applying migrations/000020_create_kb_articles.up.sql
ERROR: relation "products" does not exist
000020–000026 build an old KB design on products, users and cases, plural tables this schema has never had. make migrate runs files without -1, so 000020's CREATE TYPE kb_article_state_enum is committed before the failure, and a rerun then fails on type "kb_article_state_enum" already exists. Existing databases are not affected because they already have the files recorded.
The files reached this branch on 2026-10-05 (#1725).
What the chain leaves behind
File
Creates
End state
000020–000026
knowledge_bases, kb_managers, kb_articles, kb_article_history, two trigger functions, kb_article_state_enum, pg_trgm
All dropped again by 000027, except the pg_trgm extension. Nothing uses pg_trgm.
000027
knowledge_base, knowledge_article
knowledge_base is 0044_kb_tables.sql's, the shared table (csm-sync-service has the identical file). knowledge_article is 0044's without the foreign keys on author_id, revised_by_id (to "user") and source_case_id (to work_item). 0044 is CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, so a database where 000027 ran first still lacks them; 0262 adds them.
Created nowhere else.kb_manager_repo.go reads and writes them (/kb-manager-users, /kb-manager-groups). 000027 left user_id without its foreign key to "user".
Checked against csm-sync-service's migrations:
Its migrations go up to 0261 (as of 2026-10-28).
Its 0044_kb_tables.sql is byte-identical to ours, and says knowledge base managers are deliberately not mapped.
Nothing there mentions knowledge_base_manager_*.
So the two manager tables belong to entity-service alone.
Changes
No access to the deployed databases. I had no read-only access to dev, staging or production, so their definitions of knowledge_base_manager_user and knowledge_article were not inspected. The foreign-key decisions below rest on this evidence instead, and the 0251 and 0262 headers and CLAUDE.md say so:
000027's own header (git show 67f35215a:entity-service/migrations/000027_replace_kb_tables_with_real_schema.up.sql) says the real shared-database tables have FKs on author_id/revised_by_id/user_id to "user"(id) and on source_case_id to work_item(id). They were left out only because the local database then had a plural users table and no work_item.
csm-sync-service's 0044 declares the knowledge_article half of that list exactly, ON DELETE SET NULL.
000020 cannot run on a database the sync built (there is no products table), so a deployed database cannot have these tables from 000027 through make migrate.
Not recorded anywhere I could find: the delete action of the real user_id foreign key. \d knowledge_base_manager_user on each environment would settle it.
0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables.sql creates the two manager tables and their three indexes.
It keeps 000027's columns and constraint and index names, and adds the foreign key 000027 left out: user_id REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE. CASCADE matches knowledge_base_id; user_id is NOT NULL, so SET NULL is impossible. group_id has none, as in 000027: groups are not rows here.
Every CREATE is IF NOT EXISTS, and where the tables already exist nothing is dropped, rewritten or deleted. Where user_id has no foreign key to "user", a first DO block adds knowledge_base_manager_user_user_id_fkeyNOT VALID, and a second DO block validates it. Under make migrate the second block is a transaction of its own. The whole file runs under lock_timeout = '5s'. An existing key from user_id to "user", under any name, is left alone. If another constraint already holds that name, nothing is added and a WARNING says so. Rows naming a user that does not exist are kept, and the constraint stays NOT VALID with a WARNING giving the count.
0262_knowledge_article_user_and_case_fks.sql adds the three foreign keys 0044 declares on knowledge_article and 000027 left out: author_id and revised_by_id to "user", source_case_id to work_item, all ON DELETE SET NULL.
Per column, it leaves alone an existing foreign key to the right table, under any name. It also leaves alone a column whose 0044 constraint name is taken by something else, with a WARNING; that column then has no foreign key.
Otherwise a first DO block adds the constraint NOT VALID, and a second DO block, a transaction of its own, validates it, both under lock_timeout = '5s'. Rows that point at a missing user or work item are kept, and that constraint stays NOT VALID with a WARNING giving the count. The file header gives the UPDATE ... SET <column> = NULL and VALIDATE CONSTRAINT to run by hand. Run the UPDATE as a superuser or after SELECT set_config('app.is_internal', 'true', false). Otherwise work_item's row-level policies hide every work item from it, and it clears every source_case_id.
It is numbered after csm-sync-service's own 0261, since knowledge_article is the sync's table. Where 0044 made the table, all three keys are there and 0262 changes nothing; that dev, staging and production got the table that way has not been checked against their catalogs.
The orphan count runs with app.is_internal set for its DO block's transaction (0193 sets the same flag for its whole session), because work_item has row-level policies.
Errors: a foreign-key violation on POST /kb-manager-users now names the field: userId does not refer to an existing user or knowledgeBaseId does not refer to an existing knowledge base. POST /kb-manager-groups gives the latter. Both used to say "knowledge base does not exist" followed by pgErr.Detail, which quoted the table and column; on /kb-manager-users they said it even when the user was what was missing.
Removes the 000020–000027.up.sql / .down.sql pairs. This follows the precedent of the 000030 pair, which was removed for 0203. Databases that recorded these files keep their rows in csm_migration_applied_migration / schema_migrations; a removed file is simply never run again.
Tests:
kb_manager_migration_test.go:
0251's shape: five CREATE ... IF NOT EXISTS, the user foreign key in the CREATE TABLE, none on group_id, and only the two ALTERs that add and validate it; the add and the validation in separate DO blocks under a lock_timeout, messages as WARNINGs (a checker that is itself tested both ways).
The legacy files stay gone, and no other migration creates the manager tables. Only a CREATE TABLE counts, with comments stripped, so a later migration may alter, index or put policies on them. The matcher has its own test, both ways.
With CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN, in throwaway schemas inside a rolled-back transaction:
a fresh run and a run over 000027's tables end with the same catalog, the user foreign key validated;
existing rows are kept, run once or twice;
rows naming a missing user are kept and leave the constraint NOT VALID with the exact WARNING, while new rows are refused;
an existing user foreign key under another name is left alone;
a taken constraint name: nothing is added, with the exact WARNING;
a constraint an earlier run left NOT VALID is validated;
with "user" held by another transaction, 0251 gives up after its lock_timeout and leaves no constraint behind, and a second run adds and validates the key;
the repository returns the 23503 messages above.
kb_manager_repo_test.go: constraint name to message.
knowledge_article_fk_migration_test.go:
0262's column list matches 0044's own REFERENCES lines, and the same lock_timeout / two-block / WARNING checker passes on it.
With CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN: 0262 changes nothing on 0044's table, and 000027's table ends up identical to 0044's, run once or twice, rows untouched.
Rows pointing nowhere are kept with the exact WARNINGs, and the documented cleanup then validates.
An existing foreign key under another name, and a taken constraint name (with its WARNING), are left alone.
Constraints an earlier run left NOT VALID are validated.
With work_item held by another transaction, 0262 gives up after its lock_timeout and keeps nothing, and a second run reaches 0044's table.
The orphan count, run as a non-superuser role held to work_item's row-level policies, does not take a real work item for a missing one. This test needs a superuser DSN and skips otherwise.
Docs: entity-service CLAUDE.md, README.md, the Makefile comment and generate_schema_bootstrap.sh now give the legacy range as 000086–000105. CLAUDE.md records the audit, the evidence for the foreign keys, and what 0251 and 0262 do on each kind of database. CLAUDE.md also covers the locks, the WARNINGs, the check queries and the cleanup ("Adding a missing foreign key (0251, 0262)").
Docs, from CodeRabbit's review: the "Database migrations" section no longer says every old-style migration was renumbered or consolidated. It names the two removed chains and what replaced them (000030 by 0203_knowledge_article_history, 000020–000027 by 0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables), and says only 000086, 000087 and 000105 still run, after everything else.
Builds on #3047, which fixes the two earlier blockers (0184 and 0213, and the 100024 RLS file). Without it a fresh run stops at 0184 before reaching this range. Until #3047 merges, this PR also shows its commits; it contains #3047's head (fbd6c307f), so either order of merging is clean. 0183, 0212 and 100024 here are byte-identical to #3047's.
Verification
All runs used throwaway postgres:18-alpine containers on their own Docker network, not the running local stack. "Before" is #3047's head at the time (be1dedc30). Unless a run names another commit, "after" is 906ccbdd0, which includes #3047's head fbd6c307f. The branch head, 1cd53afea, adds only a wording change in entity-service/CLAUDE.md on top of it. Run 7 is its merge into dev-app-csm-portal. The SQL statements of 0251 and 0262 have not changed since b6e10636c; only their comments have.
1. Fresh make migrate
Before:
First run stops at 0130, which needs project_type rows the previous system supplies, so scripts/csm-compose/fixtures/0031_project_type_table.sql was loaded.
The next run stops at 000020: relation "products" does not exist.
A third run fails on type "kb_article_state_enum" already exists.
After (906ccbdd0):
First run stops at 0130 after applying 165 files; after the same fixture the next run exits 0.
164 files are applied, including 0183, 0212, 0251, 0262, 000086, 000087 and 000105; all 329 runnable files are recorded.
A rerun applies 0 files and skips 329.
Both manager tables and their indexes exist, and no kb_article_state_enum is left behind.
knowledge_base_manager_user.user_id and knowledge_article's three columns have their foreign keys, validated, and no foreign key is NOT VALID. 0262 adds nothing here, because 0044 already made them.
2. A database that already recorded 000020–000027 (make migrate), at 906ccbdd0
Built to match an old database:
Stub products, users and cases tables were created, and the real 000020–000027 files (from dev-app-csm-portal) run against them in order (all succeed).
The stubs were dropped and the eight files recorded.
The database was then migrated with everything except 0251 and 0262 (the 0130 fixture loaded as in run 1).
With a knowledge base, a user, a manager row for that user, a manager group and an article by that user seeded, this branch:
Applies only 0251 and 0262 and exits 0, with no WARNING.
pg_dump --schema-only differs by exactly four constraints: knowledge_base_manager_user_user_id_fkey (ON DELETE CASCADE) and knowledge_article's three (ON DELETE SET NULL), all validated.
pg_dump --data-only (every table except the migration ledger) is identical, apart from pg_dump's random \restrict key.
A rerun applies 0.
The whole schema then differs from run 1's only by the pg_trgm extension 000020 installed.
With rows that point nowhere (a manager row for a missing user; one article with a missing author and another with a missing case), on a database built the same way:
The same two files apply and exit 0, and every row is kept.
Those constraints are added NOT VALID with a WARNING each giving the count (three in all); revised_by_id's is validated.
A new row naming a missing user or work item is refused with 23503 on each of the four keys.
Running the cleanup from the two headers (the DELETE for 0251; the UPDATE ... SET NULL with app.is_internal set for 0262; then VALIDATE CONSTRAINT) validates all three, after which the schema differs from run 1's only by pg_trgm.
Before: exits 3 at 000020 (relation "products" does not exist).
After (906ccbdd0):
Exits 0: 304 files applied, including 0251, 0262, 000086, 000087 and 000105. 0251 and 0262 print no WARNING.
Fixtures 0031, 0121 and 0136 load, both seed files load, and the csm_app role is created.
A rerun applies 0.
4. Compose migrate-and-seed.sh, old volume, at 906ccbdd0 (000020–000027.up recorded in schema_migrations, built the same way as in run 2, then the compose run on a tree without 0251 and 0262, which exits 0)
With the clean rows of run 2: applies only 0251 and 0262 and exits 0, with no WARNING.
The whole-database schema dump differs only by the same four foreign keys, validated.
The four KB tables' data is identical, including the pre-existing manager rows.
A rerun applies 0.
With rows that point nowhere: the same three WARNINGs, every row kept, those three constraints stay NOT VALID and revised_by_id's is validated; schema_migrations gains 0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables and 0262_knowledge_article_user_and_case_fks, and a rerun applies 0.
The seed step rewrites the CHG-FIXED-* fixtures on every pass, so the data comparison here covers the KB tables only.
5. entity-service on the fresh schema (at ff1b76072; not repeated)
Built from this branch at ff1b76072 and started against run 3's database as csm_app, with a separate mock-oidc container. 0262 changes nothing on a fresh schema.
Startup is clean, and /health/database reports up.
POST /knowledge-bases returns 201.
POST /kb-manager-users:
for an existing user returns 201;
for the same user again returns 400 "this user is already a manager for this knowledge base" (the unique constraint);
for a user that does not exist returns 400 "userId does not refer to an existing user";
for a knowledge base that does not exist returns 400 "knowledgeBaseId does not refer to an existing knowledge base". POST /kb-manager-groups returns the same 400.
POST /kb-manager-users/search returns the row.
6. Go (golang:1.26, GOTOOLCHAIN=auto, at 906ccbdd0)
gofmt -l prints nothing for the changed Go files, and go vet ./... passes.
The 30 tests that -run 'KBManager|KnowledgeArticleFK|KBLegacyStragglers|KBArticle|MigrationLocking' selects (KBManager*, KnowledgeArticleFK*, KBLegacyStragglers, the KBArticle tests, TestMigrationLockingProblems) pass with a superuser CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN against a database built as in run 1, 0 skipped.
With a NOSUPERUSER CREATEROLE DSN, TestKnowledgeArticleFKMigrationCountsUnderRowLevelPolicies skips; before 906ccbdd0 it failed there at the work item insert (SQLSTATE 42501).
Mutation checks, each against the same database, at 906ccbdd0; each made at least one of those tests fail:
In 0251: removing user_id's REFERENCES, either DO block, the orphan guard, the existing-key guard, the taken-name guard or the RESET lock_timeout, or validating inside the DO block that adds. So does putting back the old 23503 message in kb_manager_repo.go.
In 0262: removing the SET lock_timeout, dropping a column from the first DO block, removing the existing-key guard, the taken-name guard, the orphan guard, the VALIDATE or the app.is_internal flag, using CASCADE, or turning the orphan WARNING into a NOTICE.
A migration that only alters or indexes the manager tables passes TestKBLegacyStragglersAreGone. A second CREATE TABLE public."knowledge_base_manager_group" fails it.
7. Merge check
git merge-tree --write-tree HEAD origin/dev-app-csm-portal exits 0 at 906ccbdd0, with dev-app-csm-portal at 8ce4a1ca3.
dev-app-csm-portal has 122 commits this branch lacks. 12 of them touch migrations or scripts/csm-compose, adding 0249_case_autoclosure.sql, 0249_salesforce_write_request.sql, 0250_usage_rollup_monthly_null_source.sql and a mock-Salesforce e2e setup. None touches the KB tables, 0251 or 0262, and migrate-and-seed.sh is unchanged.
On the merged result:
A fresh make migrate exits 0 after the 0130 fixture, with 167 applied (including both 0249 files, 0250, 0251 and 0262); a rerun applies 0 of 332; no foreign key is NOT VALID.
A fresh compose run exits 0 with 307 applied; a rerun applies 0.
Notes
A database where a fresh make migrate already died inside 000020 keeps an unused kb_article_state_enum type. It is harmless; drop it by hand if wanted. 0251 does not drop it.
make migrate against any database that never recorded the eight files now applies 0251 and 0262 and nothing else from this range.
0251 creates the manager tables where they are missing and adds the user foreign key where it is missing.
0262 adds knowledge_article's three foreign keys where they are missing. Where 0044 made the table, it changes nothing.
Where a key is added, ADD CONSTRAINT takes SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE on the table being altered (knowledge_base_manager_user or knowledge_article) and on the one it references ("user" or work_item), in a DO block that commits straight after the add. Validation runs in a second DO block under SHARE UPDATE EXCLUSIVE and ROW SHARE, which block no reads or writes. Both files run under lock_timeout = '5s'. On a database where 000027 made the manager tables, each of 0251's three CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS still takes SHARE on its table before it finds the index, within the same timeout.
Deploy
On a busy table, make migrate can stop with 55P03 (lock_not_available) in 0251 or 0262, or in 0183, 0212 or 100024, which come from [Entity-Service] Create outage_communication and cloud_status_events before the migrations that alter them #3047 with the same timeout. Nothing from the failed statement is kept and the file is not recorded. Rerun make migrate once the tables are quiet. A run that stopped in a validation block leaves the constraint NOT VALID, and the rerun validates it.
After the run, SELECT conrelid::regclass, conname FROM pg_constraint WHERE contype = 'f' AND NOT convalidated; lists any key 0251 or 0262 left NOT VALID; their WARNINGs name the table, column and count.
…before the migrations that alter them
0184_outage_communication_channel alters outage_communication and
0213_cloud_status_event_delivery_lease alters cloud_status_events, but both
tables are created only by the legacy stragglers 000105 and 000086, which
every runner (make migrate, generate_schema_bootstrap.sh, the compose
stack's migrate-and-seed.sh) applies after all 4-digit files. On a fresh
database 0184 therefore failed with `relation "outage_communication" does
not exist` and stopped the run; 0213 would have failed the same way next.
0183_outage_communication_table and 0212_cloud_status_events_table create
the two tables (with the enum and indexes) using the stragglers' own
definitions, every statement guarded. Where the tables already exist they
are no-ops, and 000086/000105 are no-ops after them. Each is numbered one
below the file that needs it, so the order does not depend on how a
runner's sort collates names. The stragglers are left as they are.

… dropped the table
100024 enables row-level security on change_request_deployment,
change_request_environment and change_request_deployed_product. 0192
drops change_request_environment, and the RLS track always runs after
every 4-digit file, so on any database that has not recorded 100024 yet
(a fresh one included) the ALTER TABLE failed with `relation
"change_request_environment" does not exist` and stopped make migrate.
The change_request_environment block now runs only where the table
exists. Databases that already recorded 100024 never run it again; the
other two tables' policies are unchanged.

…n for the KB manager tables
A fresh database could not get past 000020_create_kb_articles.up.sql:
it references products, users and cases, tables this schema has never
had (relation "products" does not exist). make migrate runs files
without -1, so 000020's CREATE TYPE was already committed and a rerun
failed on "type kb_article_state_enum already exists". Existing
databases passed only because they have the files recorded.
The chain's only lasting effect was two tables. 000020-000026 built an
older design that 000027 dropped again; 000027's knowledge_base and
knowledge_article are 0044's. knowledge_base_manager_user and
knowledge_base_manager_group, which kb_manager_repo.go reads, existed
nowhere else. csm-sync-service does not map knowledge base managers,
so the tables are entity-service's alone.
- Add 0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables.sql: both tables and their
three indexes with 000027's definitions, every statement IF NOT
EXISTS, nothing that drops or alters. A no-op where 000027 ran.
- Remove the 000020-000027 .up.sql/.down.sql pairs, as 000030 was
removed for 0203.
- Tests: the migration's shape and that the legacy files stay gone;
against a database, that 0251 makes the same tables as 000027 and
leaves existing tables and rows untouched.
- Update CLAUDE.md, README, the Makefile and the bootstrap script, which
described the legacy range as 000020-000105.

Walkthrough
The PR removes the legacy knowledge-base migration chain and adds migrations for manager tables and knowledge-article foreign keys. It also updates outage, cloud-status, and RLS migrations, repository validation messages, migration tests, and migration-ordering guidance.
Changes: Entity Service migrations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Knowledge-base manager migration and validation entity-service/migrations/000020*–000027*, entity-service/migrations/0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables.sql, entity-service/internal/repository/kb_manager_*
Removes the legacy knowledge-base migration chain and adds migration 0251 for manager tables and indexes. The migration handles existing user references and orphaned rows. Repository errors map known foreign-key constraints to field-specific messages. Tests cover migration behavior and repository validation.
Adds author, revised-by, and source-case foreign keys with ON DELETE SET NULL. The migration preserves rows with orphan references and leaves affected constraints unvalidated. Tests cover convergence and existing constraints.
Outage, cloud-status, and RLS migrations entity-service/migrations/0183_outage_communication_table.sql, entity-service/migrations/0212_cloud_status_events_table.sql, entity-service/migrations/100024_change_request_project_links_rls.sql
Adds the outage communication table and cloud status event type and table. The project-link RLS migration applies its environment-table policies only when change_request_environment exists.
Updates the documented remaining legacy migration range to 000086–000105 and describes migration phases and ordering dependencies. The naming guidance preserves existing plural table names.
wso2-open-operations/cs-tools#3047: Adds the outage communication and cloud status event migrations and the project-link RLS guard also present in this PR.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template well. It covers Purpose (the fresh-database migration failure, with the error output and linked prior PR #1725 and #3047 context), Goals and Approach (the 0251 and 0262 migrations, FK decisions, error message changes, and legacy file removal), Migrations (detailed verification across fresh, legacy, and compose runs plus a deploy section), Testing (Go tests and mutation checks), and Documentation (CLAUDE.md, README, and Makefile updates). Sections such as User stories, Release note, Documentation link, Training, Certification, Marketing, Security checks, Samples, Related PRs, Test environment, and Learning are absent or not filled in using the template headings. The description does not use the template's exact headings, and it lacks a Resolves issue reference and security checklist answers. These gaps are non-critical relative to the substantial migration detail, so the description is mostly complete.

cloud_status_events, event_publish_failures, sn_writeback_failures and
announcement_requests predate the rule and keep their names; a migration
that declares one of them again (0212 for cloud_status_events) has to use
the existing name. Raised in review of wso2-open-operations#3047.

Align the old-convention migration statement with the retained stragglers.
The document states that every old-convention migration was renumbered or consolidated. This section still retains 000086–000105 as .up.sql stragglers. Limit the earlier statement to the migrations that were actually renumbered, or explicitly exclude these retained files. Otherwise, the document gives contradictory instructions about which legacy migrations still run.

…rations section
The section said every old-convention migration was renumbered or
consolidated, while the file order below it still runs 000086, 000087
and 000105. Name those three as the exception and the two removed
chains (000030, 000020-000027) with what replaced them.

…ble name it keeps
0212 now wraps the enum, table and index in BEGIN/COMMIT, so a failure
leaves no enum without its table. Every statement stays guarded, so it is
still safe to re-run, and it has no ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE that would
need autocommit.
entity-service/CLAUDE.md now says existing plural tables keep their
names. cloud_status_events is one of them: 000086 created it under that
name and 0213 and cloud_status_repo.go use it, so 0212 creates it as is.

…r-name rule
The note named five tables and ended with "...". The schema has seven that keep
plural names; list them, and say that a migration declaring one again uses the
existing name. Same wording as wso2-open-operations#3054, so the two branches merge cleanly.

Brings in 0212's single transaction and the complete plural-table note. The note
conflicted with this branch's own version of the same line; wso2-open-operations#3047's wording is
kept, which lists all seven plural tables.

Mechanics verified on a throwaway Postgres: fresh migrate at this head applies all 328 files and reruns as a no-op; a simulated upgraded DB (000020-000027 recorded) applies only 0251 as a no-op and keeps its rows; pg_dump --schema-only of fresh vs upgraded is identical; the four new Go tests pass against the fresh DB. The open question is whether 000027 is actually what the deployed databases have (first comment).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The "fresh and old databases end up with the same tables" claim is proven only against the local copy of 000027, not against what the deployed databases have. The removed 000027 header called its definitions a LOCAL-ONLY SIMPLIFICATION: the real tables carry FKs to "user", dropped there only because the old local DB had users (plural). This schema has had "user" since 0002, and 0044 already uses REFERENCES "user"(id). If any deployed DB got these tables from the full definition rather than 000027, 0251 is a silent no-op there and fresh/compose DBs are looser than deployed ones: a manager row for a nonexistent user passes locally and fails with 23503 on the deployed DB (which CreateKBManagerUser would misreport as "knowledge base does not exist"). CreatesTheSameTablesAs000027 copies the same local DDL, so it cannot catch this. Suggest running \d knowledge_base_manager_user / \d knowledge_base_manager_group on dev, staging and prod (read only) and recording the result here. If they have the FK, add REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE plus an idempotent ADD CONSTRAINT ... NOT VALID / VALIDATE for DBs that lack it; if they match 000027, say so so the claim rests on evidence.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I had no read-only access to dev, staging or prod, so I didn't run \d. The evidence I used instead:
000027's own header (git show 67f35215a:entity-service/migrations/000027_replace_kb_tables_with_real_schema.up.sql) says the real tables carry FKs on author_id, revised_by_id and user_id to "user". They were dropped only because the local DB then had a plural users table.
csm-sync-service's 0044 matches the knowledge_article half of that list.
000020 can't run on a sync-built DB, so no deployed DB got these tables from 000027 through make migrate.
0251 now creates user_id REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE.
Where the table already exists without a user FK, it adds knowledge_base_manager_user_user_id_fkey NOT VALID and validates it. Rows naming a missing user are kept, with a NOTICE, and the constraint stays NOT VALID. A user FK already there under any name is left alone.
The 23503 now says userId does not refer to an existing user or knowledgeBaseId does not refer to an existing knowledge base, with no pgErr.Detail.
The real constraint's delete action isn't recorded anywhere I could find. A \d knowledge_base_manager_user on each environment would confirm it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Still open: nobody working on this PR can read dev, staging or production. The code side is done. 0251 creates user_id REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE (0251:127). Where the table already exists, it adds the key NOT VALID and validates it in a separate DO block, and leaves alone a key from user_id to "user" that is already there. b6e1063 made the 0251 and 0262 headers and CLAUDE.md say the claim rests on 000027's header and csm-sync-service's 0044, not on live catalogs (0251:39-46, 0262:31-38, CLAUDE.md:9912-9917).
For whoever has read access, before merge (all read-only):
SELECT to_regclass('knowledge_article'), to_regclass('knowledge_base_manager_user');
SELECT conrelid::regclass, conname, pg_get_constraintdef(oid), convalidated
FROM pg_constraint
WHERE conrelid IN (to_regclass('knowledge_article'), to_regclass('knowledge_base_manager_user'))
AND contype ='f'ORDER BY1, 2;
\d knowledge_article and \d knowledge_base_manager_user show the same. If the claim holds, knowledge_article has keys on author_id and revised_by_id (to "user") and on source_case_id (to work_item), all ON DELETE SET NULL, and 0262 changes nothing there. For knowledge_base_manager_user, the output shows whether user_id already references "user", and with which delete action. That delete action is the one thing nothing in the repo records. Leaving this thread open until someone runs them.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Not quite accurate for knowledge_article: 000027 created it with author_id, revised_by_id and source_case_id as plain UUIDs, while 0044 has REFERENCES "user"(id) on the first two and REFERENCES work_item(id) on the third. Any DB where 000027 ran before 0044 (old plain-glob order ran 000NNN first; 0044 is IF NOT EXISTS) has a knowledge_article without those three FKs, unlike a fresh one. Suggest rewording to say knowledge_base matches 0044 but knowledge_article is 0044 minus those FKs, and either add a guarded convergence step or file a follow-up. Same sentence is in the 0251 header (lines 27-29).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reworded in CLAUDE.md and in the 0251 header: knowledge_base matches 0044; knowledge_article is 0044 without the FKs on author_id, revised_by_id and source_case_id.
I also added the convergence step, 0262_knowledge_article_user_and_case_fks.sql (f12e3f8), numbered after the sync's 0261:
Per column, it leaves an existing FK alone; otherwise it adds 0044's constraint NOT VALID and validates it.
Rows pointing at a missing user or work item are kept, with a NOTICE, and the header has the cleanup.
It does nothing on databases the sync built.
On an old DB that really ran 000027, knowledge_article now dumps identically to a fresh one.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Follow-up: b6e1063 changed 0262. It now adds the keys in one DO block and validates them in another, under a 5 s lock_timeout. What is left for an operator is now a WARNING, not the NOTICE my earlier reply mentioned. 9d45932 corrects the 0262 header: a NOT VALID key checks inserted rows and rows whose key column changes, not every changed row.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This fails any future migration that merely names these tables, not only one that re-creates them: an RLS policy in the 1NNNNN track, an ALTER TABLE ... ADD CONSTRAINT (e.g. the FK question on 0251), a new index, or a comment would all trip TestKBLegacyStragglersAreGone, and the next author will have to weaken or delete the test. The intent is "no second CREATE TABLE", so match that, e.g. (?i)CREATE\s+TABLE\s+(IF\s+NOT\s+EXISTS\s+)?knowledge_base_manager_(user|group)\b against the file with comments stripped.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Narrowed in ff1b760. The test now fails only on another CREATE TABLE [IF NOT EXISTS] [schema.]["]knowledge_base_manager_(user|group), with comments stripped, and the matcher has its own both-ways test. I also mutation-checked it with real migration files:
A migration that only alters, indexes or adds a policy on the tables now passes; the old test failed on it.
A second CREATE TABLE public."knowledge_base_manager_group" fails.
The compose stack's migrate-and-seed.sh applies each migration with
`psql -1`, together with the tracking insert it appends, so that a file and
its schema_migrations row commit together. A COMMIT inside the file ends
that transaction early: the schema commits and the tracking insert runs on
its own. make migrate and generate_schema_bootstrap.sh apply files in
autocommit and record them in a separate statement, so the wrapper only
kept a file's own DDL together there. Every statement in both files is
guarded, so a run that stops partway is finished by the next one.

…er_id in 0251
000027 left this foreign key out on purpose. Its header says the real
shared-database tables carry FKs on author_id, revised_by_id and user_id to
"user", dropped only because the local database then had a plural users table.
csm-sync-service's 0044 confirms the knowledge_article half of that. 0251 copied
000027's local definition, so fresh databases accepted a manager row for a
user that does not exist.
- 0251 creates user_id as REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE.
- Where the table already exists without a foreign key from user_id to "user"
(a database that ran 000027), a DO block adds one NOT VALID, so new rows are
checked, and then validates it. If existing rows name a user that does not
exist, it keeps them, skips validation and says so in a NOTICE. A user
foreign key that is already there, under any name, is left alone. Nothing is
dropped, rewritten or deleted.
- A 23503 on a manager create now names the field (userId or knowledgeBaseId)
instead of saying "knowledge base does not exist" with pgErr.Detail, which
quoted the table and column.
- TestKBLegacyStragglersAreGone only fails on another CREATE TABLE of the
manager tables (comments stripped). A migration that alters, indexes or puts
a policy on them passes. The matcher has its own both-ways test.
- CLAUDE.md and the 0251 header no longer say 000027's knowledge_article is
0044's. It lacks the FKs on author_id, revised_by_id and source_case_id, and
that is recorded as a follow-up.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e 000027 left them out
000027 created knowledge_article with author_id, revised_by_id and
source_case_id as plain UUIDs. 0044 declares them REFERENCES "user"(id) /
work_item(id) ON DELETE SET NULL, but it is CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, so a
database where 000027 ran first never got them. That means old local databases
that had the plural products/users/cases tables. Databases the sync built
already have all three.
- 0262_knowledge_article_user_and_case_fks.sql is numbered after
csm-sync-service's 0261, since knowledge_article is its table. For each
column it leaves alone any foreign key to the right table that is already
there, whatever its name. It also leaves alone a column whose 0044
constraint name is taken by something else, with a NOTICE.
- Otherwise it adds 0044's constraint NOT VALID, so new and changed rows are
checked, then validates it.
- Rows that point at a missing user or work item are kept. Their constraint
stays NOT VALID with a NOTICE, and the header gives the UPDATE and VALIDATE
to run by hand. Nothing is nulled, deleted or rewritten.
- The orphan count runs with a transaction-local app.is_internal, as 0193 does,
because work_item is row-level secured.
- knowledge_article_fk_migration_test.go checks the column list against 0044's
own REFERENCES lines. With CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN, in throwaway schemas, it
checks that 0262 is a no-op on 0044's table and that 000027's table ends up
identical to 0044's, run once or twice, rows untouched. It also covers rows
that point nowhere (NOT VALID, new rows refused, the documented cleanup
validates), an existing FK under another name, and a taken constraint name.
- CLAUDE.md: the knowledge_article bullet now names 0262 instead of a
follow-up.

Follow-up at 8f27c90. All three earlier comments are addressed in code. Verified on a throwaway Postgres 18: fresh migrate applies 329 files with every FK validated; a simulated upgraded DB in 000027 shape with orphan rows runs 0251 and 0262 to exit 0, keeps the orphans untouched, leaves the affected FKs NOT VALID and still rejects new bad rows; the 13 KB manager / FK migration tests pass. The convergence claim still rests on 000027's header rather than the live catalogs, so a read-only \d knowledge_article and \d knowledge_base_manager_user on each environment before merge would settle it. Two operational points below.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
No lock_timeout, and ADD CONSTRAINT and VALIDATE run in the same transaction (one DO block). On any database missing one of these FKs, ADD CONSTRAINT needs SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE on knowledge_article and on "user" or work_item. It queues behind any open transaction that has written to work_item, and while it waits every new INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE on work_item queues behind it. Reproduced locally: with one session holding ROW EXCLUSIVE on work_item, this file waited on the relation lock and a plain UPDATE on work_item from a third session stalled until its own lock_timeout fired. Because VALIDATE is in the same transaction, those locks are also held for the whole validation scan, which is what NOT VALID is meant to avoid. Suggest PERFORM set_config('lock_timeout', '5s', true) at the start of the block so it fails fast and can simply be rerun (the file is guarded), and ideally run VALIDATE as a separate statement so it holds only SHARE UPDATE EXCLUSIVE. 0251 lines 100-114 have the same shape on "user".
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in b6e1063, in both 0262 and 0251. Each file now starts with SET lock_timeout = '5s' (0262:112, 0251:122) and ends with RESET lock_timeout (0262:195, 0251:214), with no BEGIN/COMMIT. A first DO block only adds the missing constraints NOT VALID (0262:114, 0251:148). A second DO block validates them (0262:155, 0251:180), and under make migrate it is a transaction of its own, so the SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE locks end when the add commits.
With work_item (0262) or "user" (0251) held by another transaction, the file now fails after 5 s with 55P03 and keeps nothing, and a second run adds and validates the keys. TestKnowledgeArticleFKMigrationGivesUpWhenWorkItemIsBusy and TestKBManagerMigrationGivesUpWhenUserIsBusy pin this; removing the SET from 0262 fails the first of them (re-checked at 906ccbd). 9d45932 adds one more lock to the 0251 header: an existing index's CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS still takes SHARE on its table, within the same timeout. The PR description now has a Deploy note: on a busy table make migrate stops with 55P03 and must be rerun.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Orphans leave the constraint NOT VALID with only a NOTICE. Once the file is recorded it never runs again and nobody reads NOTICE lines in a deploy log, so the constraint can stay NOT VALID indefinitely and the database keeps differing from a fresh one silently. Suggest RAISE WARNING here, and documenting a check operators can run, e.g. SELECT conrelid::regclass, conname FROM pg_constraint WHERE contype = 'f' AND NOT convalidated;. Same at 0251 line 109.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in b6e1063. The orphan messages are now RAISE WARNING with the table, column, count and constraint (0262:185, 0251:205). So are the name-collision messages, which say no key was added for that column (0262:140, 0251:167; 0251 used to fail with 42710 there). Both headers give SELECT conrelid::regclass, conname FROM pg_constraint WHERE contype = 'f' AND NOT convalidated;, a query listing the table's foreign keys, and the cleanup (0262:80-107, 0251:96-118). CLAUDE.md gives the same under "Adding a missing foreign key (0251, 0262)" (CLAUDE.md:9876).
The 0262 cleanup also says to run its UPDATE as a superuser or with app.is_internal set. Otherwise work_item's row-level policies hide every work item from it, and it clears every source_case_id. The tests assert the exact WARNINGs.
…hout naming the vendor
The column comment in 0183 was copied from 000105 and named the vendor
behind the backing data source. It now says the
...
wrappers
come from the backing data source, and that stripping them would change
how existing updates display. Wording only; the table definition is
unchanged.

…e_request_environment
0192 drops change_request_environment before make migrate reaches the
RLS track, so 100024 skips that table's block. Its header still said all
three join tables end up under FORCE, and the RLS-track paragraph in
entity-service/CLAUDE.md still said three ENABLE/FORCE pairs and nine
policies, which contradicted the note added next to the phase order.
Both now say what a fresh make migrate leaves: RLS enabled and forced on
change_request_deployment and change_request_deployed_product, six
policies from 100024 (three on each), and with 100023's UPDATE policy
four on change_request_deployment. A database that still has
change_request_environment (0191 applied, 0192 not) ends the same way,
because make migrate applies 0192 first in the same run. The comment above
the block names make migrate instead of "every runner", since the compose
runner does not apply the RLS track. Comments and docs only.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… they name
- The stragglers run after every 4-digit file, not last: the RLS file
generate_schema_bootstrap.sh writes is run after the schema file that
ends with them.
- migrate-and-seed.sh applies this file with psql -1, not each file:
it applies a file that builds an index CONCURRENTLY without -1.
- 000086 has notes on some columns, not on each one.
- outage_communication's index note no longer speaks of one endpoint:
the outage detail counts, the journal search and the status-page list
all read one outage's rows, and the lists read them newest first.
Comments only; neither table definition changes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Where outage_communication or cloud_status_events already exists,
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS takes a SHARE lock on the table before it
finds the index, and where outage_communication does not exist yet, its
foreign key takes a SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE lock on outage. Either waits
behind open writes and holds up the writes queued after it (reproduced:
with a write transaction open, each file waited until lock_timeout
cancelled it). Both files now set lock_timeout to 5s and reset it at the
end, as 0179 and 100023 do, so a busy table fails the file instead, and
the next make migrate run applies it.
The headers now say that the table, index and enum statements are the
guarded ones, and the CLAUDE.md note says every CREATE is guarded rather
than every statement.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…out and validate them separately
0251 and 0262 added a missing foreign key NOT VALID and validated it in the
same DO block, with no lock_timeout. The SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE locks the ADD
takes on the table and on "user" or work_item were held through the orphan
count and the validation scan, and on a busy referenced table the migration,
and every writer queued behind it, waited for as long as the other
transaction lasted.
- Both files now SET lock_timeout = '5s' first and RESET it last. A first DO
block only adds the missing constraints NOT VALID. A second DO block, a
transaction of its own under make migrate, counts the rows that point
nowhere for each constraint still NOT VALID and validates those with none.
- Rows that point nowhere, and a constraint name already held by another
constraint, are reported with RAISE WARNING instead of NOTICE. 0251 now
guards the taken name as 0262 does; it used to fail on it.
- The headers and entity-service/CLAUDE.md give the locks each statement
takes, the read-only check queries, the cleanup (0262's UPDATE needs
work_item's row-level policies lifted, or it clears every source_case_id),
and what the claim about deployed databases rests on.
- Tests: a checker for the lock_timeout, the split and the WARNING level,
itself tested both ways; the WARNINGs collected from the connection; a
taken name in 0251; a constraint an earlier run left NOT VALID; the
lock_timeout with "user" or work_item held by another transaction; and
0262's count as a role held to work_item's row-level policies.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… and in the RLS-track paragraph
The header and the paragraph now say what a fresh make migrate was
checked to leave: change_request_environment absent, RLS enabled and
forced on change_request_deployment and change_request_deployed_product,
six policies from 100024 (SELECT, INSERT and DELETE on each), and with
100023's UPDATE policy four on change_request_deployment, seven in all.
"A database built from these migrations" becomes "a database make
migrate builds", since the compose runner does not apply the RLS track.
Both places also say when the change_request_environment block does
act: only where 100024 runs while the table still exists (applied by
hand ahead of 0192). 0192's DROP TABLE then removes the table with its
three policies, so that database ends the same way. Checked on a
throwaway database in both orders.
The header's first line says "row-level policies for the join tables in
0191", not "the join tables 0191 creates": on a fresh database
change_request_deployment is created by 0136, and 0191's CREATE TABLE IF
NOT EXISTS is a no-op for it.
Comments and docs only.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Under make migrate the unguarded block stopped 100024 on every database
where 0192 had run, so a database that has not recorded 100024 applies
it with this branch, on tables that may be in use. (Whether dev, staging
or production recorded it by other means has not been checked here.)
Enabling and forcing RLS, DROP POLICY and CREATE POLICY each take an
ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock, which waits behind any open transaction on
change_request_deployment (written by csm-sync-service too) or
change_request_deployed_product, and holds up every reader queued after
it.
SET LOCAL lock_timeout = '5s' after BEGIN, as 0152 and 0154 do inside
their transactions, makes a busy table fail the file instead. Checked:
with a reader open on change_request_deployed_product the file failed
after 5 s at that table's ALTER TABLE, the policy it had already

The note said both "stopped every fresh make migrate and compose
stack". Only 0184 did: on the base branch a fresh make migrate and a
fresh compose migrate-and-seed.sh both stop at 0184 with
relation "outage_communication" does not exist, so neither reaches 0213.
The note now says 0213 would have stopped them next.

The RLS track paragraph named 100024 as the next number although 100024

transaction, which 7 of the 25 do not.

Brings in wso2-open-operations#3047's review fixes: the backing data source wording in 0183,
lock_timeout on 0183, 0212 and 100024, and the exact RLS end state in the
100024 header and CLAUDE.md. In CLAUDE.md this branch's KB chain sentences
are kept beside wso2-open-operations#3047's.

…ting index still takes SHARE, and which rows a NOT VALID key checks
000020 installs pg_trgm and nothing drops it, so a database that ran the
chain keeps the extension. The 0251 header and CLAUDE.md now say so.
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS takes SHARE on its table before it finds an
existing index, so on a database where 000027 made the indexes each of
0251's three still waits for open writers, within the lock_timeout. The
0251 header and CLAUDE.md say "changes nothing" rather than "no-op" and
name that lock.
A NOT VALID foreign key is checked for inserted rows and for rows whose key
column changes, not for every changed row. The 0251 and 0262 headers and
CLAUDE.md now say that.
Comments and docs only; no statement changes.

…ruser DSN
TestKnowledgeArticleFKMigrationCountsUnderRowLevelPolicies inserts a work
item without app.is_internal, which work_item's forced row-level policies
refuse to anyone but a superuser, and hands knowledge_article to a new
role, which PostgreSQL 16 and later refuse to a CREATEROLE creator that
cannot SET ROLE to it. It skipped only when the role could not create
roles, so a non-superuser CREATEROLE DSN failed it instead of skipping.
It now skips unless the DSN's role is a superuser.
Checked with a NOSUPERUSER CREATEROLE role: the test now skips; with the
old check it failed at the work item insert (SQLSTATE 42501).

Follow-up at 1cd53af: all three comments resolved. Verified on a throwaway Postgres 18 under make migrate, the compose runner and the bootstrap generator: 0262, 0251 and 100024 each fail at ~5.0s when a referenced table is busy, record nothing, and converge on rerun (including a timeout between the two DO blocks); orphans print a WARNING and leave the key NOT VALID; the 20 migration tests pass with a superuser DSN. Two small follow-ups.

This header (and the same paragraph in 0251) covers make migrate and the compose runner, but scripts/generate_schema_bootstrap.sh also emits these files for delta runs (--since/--from), concatenating each file with its tracking INSERT in one psql session. With a lock_timeout, 0262 now fails by design when work_item is busy. Run without -v ON_ERROR_STOP=1, psql logs the 55P03 and keeps going: the second DO block finds nothing to validate, RESET runs, and the INSERT records 0262 as applied with no keys added. Reproduced on PG18 with work_item held ROW EXCLUSIVE: rc=0, both files recorded, 0 of 3 constraints present. The generated header recommends ON_ERROR_STOP, but lock_timeout makes it load-bearing. Suggest having the generator emit \set ON_ERROR_STOP on as the first line of its output, and a sentence here that a bootstrap or delta run must stop on error.
scripts/generate_schema_bootstrap.sh now writes \set ON_ERROR_STOP on as the first line of both the schema file and the RLS file (lines 276 and 304), so a full, --since or --from/--to run stops at the first failing statement no matter how psql is invoked. The script header (line 93) says why: without it the INSERT after a failed file records it as applied, and 0251 and 0262 fail by design under their lock_timeout. Each generated header now says the run must stop at the first error and, for a client that does not understand psql's backslash commands, to remove that line and set the client to stop on the first error.
The 0262 header (0262:78-84) and the matching paragraph in 0251 (0251:94-100) now say that a bootstrap or delta file runs the file and its tracking INSERT in one psql run, so that run must stop on the first error; if it carries on, the INSERT records the file although the failed statement did nothing, and it never runs again.
Checked: --since 0250 writes both files with the line first, and 0251 and 0262 inside the schema file. On a throwaway Postgres 18, with a table held ROW EXCLUSIVE by another session, a file shaped like the generated one (first line, then a DO block under a 1 s lock_timeout, then the tracking INSERT) stopped at the 55P03 with rc=3 and recorded nothing; the same file without the first line ended rc=0 with the row recorded. The no-database tests in kb_manager_migration_test.go and knowledge_article_fk_migration_test.go pass; the database tests were not rerun, since only comments changed in the migrations. No generated output is committed anywhere, so nothing needed regenerating.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: since 906ccbd this check only runs with a superuser CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN; with a NOSUPERUSER CREATEROLE DSN it SKIPs and plain go test just prints ok. No CI workflow runs these Go tests, so a regression is only caught by someone using a superuser DSN. Say "with a superuser CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN" here, or make the test work without superuser (set app.is_internal for the seed insert and RESET it before SET ROLE; GRANT <migrator role> TO current_user WITH SET TRUE so OWNER TO succeeds for a CREATEROLE creator on PG16+).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 5dd832b with your first option. entity-service/CLAUDE.md (lines 9844-9846) now says the orphan count under work_item's row-level policies is checked only with a superuser CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN, and that under any other role that test skips and plain go test still prints ok. The other database checks in that sentence run with any CASE_STATS_TEST_DSN: TestKnowledgeArticleFKMigrationCountsUnderRowLevelPolicies is the only one with the superuser skip.
A bootstrap or delta file from generate_schema_bootstrap.sh runs each
migration followed by the INSERT that records it, in one psql session.
Without ON_ERROR_STOP, psql logs a failure and carries on, so a 0251 or
0262 that gives up under its lock_timeout is still recorded and never
runs again. Each generated file now starts with \set ON_ERROR_STOP on,
its header says the run must stop at the first error, and the 0251 and
0262 headers say so too.

Problem
On
dev-app-csm-portal, a fresh database (a new compose volume, a new environment, or CI migrating from empty) cannot finish migrating. With #3047 applied, make migrateand the composemigrateservice both stop in the legacy phase:000020–000026build an old KB design onproducts, usersandcases, plural tables this schema has never had.make migrateruns files without-1, so000020'sCREATE TYPE kb_article_state_enumis committed before the failure, and a rerun then fails ontype "kb_article_state_enum" already exists. Existing databases are not affected because they already have the files recorded. The files reached this branch on 2026-10-05 (#1725).
What the chain leaves behind
000020–000026knowledge_bases,kb_managers,kb_articles,kb_article_history, two trigger functions,kb_article_state_enum,pg_trgm000027, except thepg_trgmextension. Nothing usespg_trgm.000027knowledge_base,knowledge_articleknowledge_baseis0044_kb_tables.sql's, the shared table (csm-sync-service has the identical file).knowledge_articleis0044's without the foreign keys onauthor_id,revised_by_id(to"user") andsource_case_id(towork_item).0044isCREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, so a database where000027ran first still lacks them;0262adds them.000027knowledge_base_manager_user,knowledge_base_manager_group,idx_kb_manager_user_knowledge_base_id,idx_kb_manager_user_user_id,idx_kb_manager_group_knowledge_base_idkb_manager_repo.goreads and writes them (/kb-manager-users,/kb-manager-groups).000027leftuser_idwithout its foreign key to"user".Checked against csm-sync-service's migrations:
0261(as of 2026-10-28).0044_kb_tables.sqlis byte-identical to ours, and says knowledge base managers are deliberately not mapped.knowledge_base_manager_*.So the two manager tables belong to entity-service alone.
Changes
knowledge_base_manager_userandknowledge_articlewere not inspected. The foreign-key decisions below rest on this evidence instead, and the0251and0262headers andCLAUDE.mdsay so:000027's own header (git show 67f35215a:entity-service/migrations/000027_replace_kb_tables_with_real_schema.up.sql) says the real shared-database tables have FKs onauthor_id/revised_by_id/user_idto"user"(id)and onsource_case_idtowork_item(id). They were left out only because the local database then had a pluraluserstable and nowork_item.0044declares theknowledge_articlehalf of that list exactly,ON DELETE SET NULL.000020cannot run on a database the sync built (there is noproductstable), so a deployed database cannot have these tables from000027throughmake migrate.user_idforeign key.\d knowledge_base_manager_useron each environment would settle it.0251_knowledge_base_manager_tables.sqlcreates the two manager tables and their three indexes.000027's columns and constraint and index names, and adds the foreign key000027left out:user_id REFERENCES "user"(id) ON DELETE CASCADE. CASCADE matchesknowledge_base_id;user_idisNOT NULL, soSET NULLis impossible.group_idhas none, as in000027: groups are not rows here.CREATEisIF NOT EXISTS, and where the tables already exist nothing is dropped, rewritten or deleted. Undermake migratethe second block is a transaction of its own. The whole file runs underlock_timeout = '5s'. An existing key fromuser_idto"user", under any name, is left alone.
