Summary

Validation passes only when the key-count discrepancy is under 1%, but on clusters it compares the wrong numbers:

  • target: DBSIZE on the Cluster client goes to one random node;
  • source: the validation source client is a standalone connection to the seed node, so a cluster source counts one shard.

A complete standalone → cluster or cluster → cluster migration therefore reports a large discrepancy (36–120% in the e2e below) and passed: false, and the number changes from run to run. With a validation step added to the topology e2e, master gives:

topology sourceKeys targetKeys passed
standalone → cluster 11 7 false
cluster → standalone 5 11 false
cluster → cluster 5 1 false

Changes

  • countKeys() sums DBSIZE over nodes('master') for a Cluster client (and throws when there are no masters); compareKeyCounts uses it on both sides.
  • The validation service detects a cluster source (same INFO cluster check as the target) and opens a Cluster client just for the count. The sample spot-check keeps the standalone client so SCAN cursors stay on one node.
  • Docs: "DBSIZE accuracy in cluster mode" (known limitation) is replaced by how counting works now.
  • Topology e2e: every scenario now runs validation after the migration and asserts the full key count on both sides, 0 discrepancy and passed: true.

Verification

  • pnpm exec jest src/migration: 247 passed (+6: comparator spec, plus the service using a cluster count client and closing it). Reverting the two source files fails them.
  • RUN_TOPOLOGY_TESTS=true pnpm test:migration-topology: 6/6 against real 3-master Valkey 9.1.2 clusters; master code fails 3 of the 4 topologies on the new validation assertions.
  • tsc --noEmit clean, no new ESLint findings.

📝 Walkthrough

Migration validation now sums key counts across every master on cluster sources and targets. For clustered sources, validation creates and closes an additional cluster client for source counting. Tests cover the count comparison and migration validation flows.

Changes: Cluster-Aware Migration Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Count keys across cluster masters
apps/api/src/migration/validation/key-count-comparator.ts, apps/api/src/migration/__tests__/key-count-comparator.spec.ts, docs/migration.md
countKeys uses DBSIZE for standalone clients and sums results from every cluster master. Tests cover both client types, clusters without masters, and comparisons in both migration directions. Documentation describes cluster counting and source spot-checking.
Validate clustered sources
apps/api/src/migration/migration-validation.service.ts, apps/api/src/migration/__tests__/migration-validation.service.spec.ts, apps/api/test/migration-topology.e2e-spec.ts
Validation detects cluster status for both endpoints. For a clustered source, it creates and closes an additional cluster client for key-count comparison. Unit and topology tests check the validation results.

Validation can fail if a source loses INFO permission after connecting. This is a narrow, recoverable risk; the change is mergeable with that prerequisite understood.

Handle INFO denial during validation.

runValidation calls sourceAdapter.getInfo(['cluster']) before key counting. UnifiedDatabaseAdapter delegates this call to iovalkey without catching errors, so an INFO denial sets the validation job to failed.

Normal connection setup already requires INFO through getInfo(['server']), so this is not a new requirement for sources that connect normally. However, an existing connection can lose that permission, and the registry also retains failed adapters for reconnection. Use a reliable non-INFO topology signal or document INFO as an ongoing validation prerequisite.

Clean fix, approving with nits. jest src/migration passes (247 tests). I went through the failover cases: DBSIZE has no key so there's no MOVED redirect, a dead master makes Promise.all reject and the job fails instead of undercounting, and replicas aren't counted twice. It also merges cleanly with #547.

1. Pin the fail-instead-of-undercount behaviour in a test (key-count-comparator.spec.ts)

This is the property I'd most want protected. A later refactor to Promise.allSettled, or a per-node .catch(() => 0), would silently undercount and nothing would catch it. One case where a master's dbsize rejects, asserting countKeys rejects, covers it.

2. The multi-db warning fires on every standalone → cluster validation (key-count-comparator.ts:36-41)

This predates the PR, but now that the docs say the counts are accurate, a passed validation with 0 discrepancy that also warns "Source uses multiple databases" stands out. Only warn when the source keyspace shows databases other than db0. The comment next to it is wrong too: DBSIZE counts only the selected database.

3. Masters that own no slots are skipped (key-count-comparator.ts:11)

nodes('master') comes from CLUSTER SLOTS, while the command worker (parseClusterMasters) and analysis (migration.service.ts:216) list masters from CLUSTER NODES. Leftover keys on a slotless master, e.g. after an interrupted reshard, get migrated but not counted. Rare, so documenting it is fine.

4. Wrap sourceCountClient.connect() (migration-validation.service.ts:160-163)

The other connects are wrapped, this one isn't. Unreachable announced addresses (NAT, docker) surface as "None of startup nodes is available" instead of "Source instance is not reachable…".

5. Shared helper with #547

#547 enumerates masters the same way (capacity-checker.ts:36-39). Whichever merges second can move it into a helper in client-factory.ts.

CodeRabbit's INFO cluster comment can be dismissed, since connecting already requires INFO.

Unrelated to this PR: createClient (execution/client-factory.ts:7) never passes config.dbIndex, so a standalone connection set to db N is counted and sampled on db0. #544 fixed that for key analytics only. I'll open a separate issue.
