Following the Docker → Colima proposal, this documents Colima as the default Docker runtime for environments/ on macOS. On Windows it suggests Rancher Desktop (with its dockerd engine) or Docker Desktop.

What changes

  • The environments/README.md prerequisites ask for "a Docker runtime" instead of linking Docker Desktop. A new "Docker runtime" section covers:
    • installing and starting Colima;
    • the cliPluginsExtraDirs entry for Homebrew's Compose plugin, without which docker compose isn't found on Apple Silicon;
    • starting Colima at login;
    • the alternatives on Windows and Linux.
  • The root README's quick start says "Ensure a Docker runtime is running", linking to that section.

The docs don't pass --vm-type vz --mount-type virtiofs because Colima defaults to both on current macOS.

How it was verified

Tested on Apple Silicon with Colima 0.10.3, wp-env 11.17 and Docker Desktop 4.87 running side by side:

  • Environments: support-forums (multisite) and its tests, plugin-directory and its tests, jobs, browsehappy, and FreeScout. FreeScout's 394 tests pass with docker compose --build --wait.
  • Xdebug: works with no extra setup. Colima maps host.docker.internal to the Mac, and a listener on port 9003 received the DBGp init packet.
  • Memory: even the 2 GiB default VM ran FreeScout plus three wp-envs, 12 containers, without running out of memory. The suggested --memory 4 leaves room.
  • Gotchas: stale single-file mappings and Docker network-pool exhaustion behave the same as on Docker Desktop, with the same fixes.
  • Speed: both runtimes matched at 8 CPUs / 8 GB, with medians over three alternating rounds:
Colima Docker Desktop
wp-env start (environment was stopped) 39.7 s 39.5 s
plugin-directory PHPUnit 7.2 s 7.1 s
Homepage 92 ms 88 ms
wp-env stop 12.7 s 6.1 s

Nothing in the configs, scripts, or wp-env itself needs to change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated Quick Start guidance to support any Docker runtime instead of requiring Docker Desktop specifically.
    • Expanded environment setup instructions with Docker runtime prerequisites, including Colima installation and startup on macOS.
    • Added Apple Silicon Docker CLI configuration and runtime startup guidance.
    • Clarified runtime options for Windows and Linux, including Rancher Desktop, Docker Desktop, and Docker Engine.

Colima runs every environment here unchanged, Xdebug included, and needs no
account or license. Document its setup, including the Compose plugin path
Homebrew doesn't wire up, and keep Docker Desktop as the alternative.

…ole file

Docker Desktop users already have a ~/.docker/config.json with
currentContext, credsStore and the like. A complete JSON object invites
replacing the file, which drops those settings.

Rancher Desktop is free with no license prompt, in line with the Colima
default on macOS. It has to run its dockerd (moby) engine: the default
containerd engine has no docker CLI or socket, so docker compose and wp-env
cannot reach it.
