The built-in plugins have no subharmonic synthesizer (docs/plugin-parity.md, Harmonic row). Chapter 54 of Avid's Audio Plug-Ins Guide 2023.9 (pages 343 to 353) describes one that "synthesizes low-frequencies based on the harmonic content of the source audio signal", with its controls and their ranges: https://web.archive.org/web/20260809112153/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Audio_Plug-Ins_Guide_2023.9.pdf

This adds Subharmonic (subharmonic), an original plugin in the Harmonic category that also runs offline as AudioSuite. The controls and ranges follow the guide's mono and stereo version. The synthesis method, what each Drive character changes, that a band solo also mutes the dry signal, that -120 dB turns a band off, the linear Mix taper and the defaults are SoundCraft's own; the guide does not describe them.

  • Bands: Range picks a lower and an upper band frequency (120-180, 80-120, 60-90 or 40-60 Hz). Each band band-passes the input at its frequency and multiplies it by a flip-flop that changes sign on every rising zero crossing, which moves the band an octave down at a level that follows the band. The direct band is the input low-passed at the upper band frequency.
  • Gains and solos: Lower, Upper and Direct Gain run from -120 to +24 dB (-120 dB is off), each with a solo. A soloed band plays alone and mutes the dry signal.
  • Drive: -18 to +18 dB into a saturation stage with six characters: Clean I (tanh), Clean II (a softer curve), Resonant I and II (tanh, with Q 2 and 4 on the low-pass after each divider), Distort I (asymmetric, DC removed) and Distort II (hard clip at full scale).
  • Filters: HP and LP Freq (5 to 1000 Hz) and Q (0.1 to 5) shape the summed bands after Drive.
  • Mix: below 50 % the dry signal stays at full level and the wet level falls; above 50 % the wet signal stays at full level and the dry level falls. Wet Solo mutes the dry signal. Input and Output run from -18 to +18 dB.
  • docs/plugin-parity.md, ROADMAP.md and the README plugin list name it. The parity doc's Total row now reads 26 processors + 3 instruments, the count of the built-in registry, and its Instruments row lists sampler and no longer lists the Sampler as missing.
  • MIDI tuning and the surround version (LFE output, surround sends) are not part of this change.

New tests, each failing on main:

  • subharmonic_adds_the_octave_below_each_range_band: for every range and both bands, a sine at the band frequency gives a tone at half that frequency, at least four times its input tone.
  • subharmonic_mix_keeps_one_path_at_full_level: the dry level is 1, 1, 1, 0.5 and 0 at Mix 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %, and the wet level is full from 50 % up and half at 25 %.
  • subharmonic_solo_plays_one_band_and_mutes_the_dry_signal: a solo plays only that band and removes the dry signal; a soloed band at -120 dB leaves silence.
  • subharmonic_drive_keeps_every_character_bounded: with +18 dB input, +24 dB band gains and +18 dB drive, every character keeps the peak below 1.5.

The plugin-wide tests (parameters, silence, impulse bounds, hostile parameters, odd host calls, fuzz) run on it as well.

Checks:

  • cargo test -p soundcraft-dsp: 38 + 62 tests passed
  • cargo clippy -p soundcraft-dsp --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask layers

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at aa74bff, merged with #998, #1017 and #1018 for failures that also occur on main on Windows:

  • cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,274 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at aa74bff. With #1013 (Auto Pan), the code merges cleanly, and README.md, ROADMAP.md and docs/plugin-parity.md conflict because both add a plugin to the same lines.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Subharmonic effect for generating octave-down tones, with adjustable frequency bands, drive character, filtering, and mix controls.
    • The built-in processor list now includes DC removal.
    • Sampler support includes MP3 and OGG files, in addition to WAV, AIFF, and FLAC.
    • The Feature tour lists the Subharmonic effect and sampler format support.

The built-in plugins had no subharmonic synthesizer. Subharmonic
(`subharmonic`, Harmonic category, also offline as AudioSuite) adds the
octave below a lower and an upper band of the input. The Range picks the
two band frequencies (120-180, 80-120, 60-90 or 40-60 Hz). Each band
band-passes the input at its frequency and multiplies it by a flip-flop
that changes sign on every rising zero crossing, which moves the band an
octave down at a level that follows the band. A direct band adds the
input's own bass.

Each band has a gain from -120 to +24 dB and a solo; a solo also mutes
the dry signal. Drive raises the summed bands into one of six saturation
characters, and HP and LP filters (5 to 1000 Hz, Q 0.1 to 5) shape the
result. Below 50 % Mix the dry signal stays at full level, above 50 % the
wet signal does, and Wet Solo mutes the dry signal. Input and Output run
from -18 to +18 dB.

The Total row in docs/plugin-parity.md now counts 25 processors and 3
instruments, the entries in the built-in registry, and its Instruments
row lists `sampler` and no longer lists the Sampler as missing.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 7b19c

The PR is functionally mergeable, but the plugin-parity metadata should be refreshed to reflect the documented October 24 update.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 7b19c

The added effect follows the existing plugin interface and transforms supplied audio using instance-owned state. The reviewed change introduces no observed privileged access, external communication, or persistent-state transition.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly reachable behavior directly affects supplied audio buffers and the selected instance’s DSP state. The inspected implementation introduces no filesystem, network, credential, or cross-service authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Caller-controlled identifier selection reaches one fixed built-in constructor. Parameter values and audio samples influence DSP output, but no path from those inputs to arbitrary loading or a privileged sink was established in the reviewed extension.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Unknown plugin identifiers remain rejected. Parameter writes use the existing clamping and unknown-parameter rejection path. Channel allocation is capped at 64, and processing writes only within available buffers and prepared channel state.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Exclusive mutable lifecycle methods prevent concurrent mutation through the safe Plugin API. Re-preparation and reset provide local recovery boundaries, and owned state requires no external cleanup transaction or persistent rollback.

Merged main at aa74bff (9b60e84). README.md, ROADMAP.md and docs/plugin-parity.md conflicted with the Ring Modulator: both plugins are now listed, the header lines keep both changes, and the Total row reads 26 processors + 3 instruments. 7b19c30 sets ROADMAP's Last reviewed date. On Windows, merged with #998, #1017 and #1018, cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,274 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored. The branch merges cleanly with main.
