setup.playback_engine / setup.hardware: apply device and buffer in the app, don't claim it headless - #1077
setup.playback_engine and setup.hardware accepted {device?, buffer_size?} but only stored them as session values (engine.device, engine.buffer_size) that nothing reads.
The result was misleading: setup.playback_engine {buffer_size: 1024} answered buffer_size: 1024 while the device kept running at 512 frames. With nothing set, it also reported 1024. Found driving SoundCraft over MCP and confirmed with the callback load meter from #1067: 10.7 ms buffers after the command, 21.3 ms after choosing 1024 in the window.
Fix
In the app, a programmatic call goes through the same path as Setup ▸ Playback Engine (ui.audio_device):
device becomes the output device, and buffer_size reopens the device.
delay_compensation is still applied through the engine command, once the device change is accepted.
The result is the state actually in use: applied: true, the device name, device_buffer (null when the device default is in use), the sample rate and delay compensation.
The menu still opens the window.
Buffer values: any integer from 16 to 8192, as ui.audio_device accepts. Anything else is an error and changes nothing, not even delay compensation. Previously out-of-range values were clamped and 300 was rounded to 512.
Headless (CLI without the app): the request is still stored, but the result says applied: false, and buffer_size is null until one is set.
playback_engine_applies_the_same_device_choice_as_the_audio_command covers buffer 256 like ui.audio_device, an invalid buffer, a change during recording, and delay compensation.

Walkthrough
The Setup commands now validate and store device and buffer settings in the engine, and the desktop UI applies supplied settings through its audio path. The commands report audio state, and tests cover validation, application, and menu routing.
The shared handler validates device and buffer settings before changing session values. Buffer sizes must be integers from 16 through 8192 or null; device values must be strings or null. Omitted values remain unchanged, while null clears the corresponding setting. Headless responses report applied: false.
setup_audio_command forwards device and buffer settings to the audio-device command, applies delay compensation for setup.playback_engine after a successful device change, and returns audio state. Programmatic calls use this path; menu clicks open the Playback Engine window. Tests cover command behavior and menu reachability.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 5c865
Invalid device values are rejected without changing settings, and a desktop request with no player does not claim to have been applied. No identified issue blocks merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5c865
Live device changes reuse existing validation, recording protection, and cleanup behavior. No material security regression was established. Device-failure behavior and authorization outside the inspected command path remain incompletely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated effect is scoped to the receiving desktop application's audio preferences, player, plugin editors, recorder, and current session delay compensation. Repeated commands can reopen those resources, but the inspected route already exposed this capability through ui.audio_device.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-controlled JSON crosses into live device handling through the existing generic command dispatcher and mutable SoundApp owner. Setup requests reuse audio validation and recording protection rather than directly manipulating streams. This establishes the repository-local control chain, not authentication guarantees for external ingress.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing output-failure handling stops transport while preserving a recording take, and reconnect explicitly clears recorder ownership and replaces the player. These recovery owners remain unchanged in the full PR comparison; backend-specific interruption timing was not runtime-verified.

setup.playback_engine and setup.hardware stored device and buffer_size on the session and reported 1024 when nothing was set. Playback never read those values, so the open device stayed at its old buffer. In the app the commands now reopen the device through ui.audio_device and return the name, buffer and sample rate actually in use, while delay compensation still goes through the engine command. Headless keeps the stored request, returns applied: false, and leaves buffer_size null until one is set. A buffer is any integer from 16 to 8192 and is not rounded to a power of two; values outside that range error.

Reject non-string device values before changing session or audio configuration, include bit depth in desktop responses, and report applied only for an open non-silent device.

…limit
Upstream now denies clippy::cognitive_complexity (storytold#1129). The test is
split into refusals, applying, and parity with ui.audio_device; the
assertions are unchanged.

Merge-order note: this PR and #1076 each pass on their own, but they interact. #1076 makes SoundApp::player private behind app.player(), and this PR still reads app.player directly (setup_audio_command in panels/windows.rs and the audio_device integration test). Git merges them without a conflict there, so the combination only fails at compile time.
