Totals: 9 files split, 17,204 lines moved out of them, 63 new files.

Changes besides moved lines

  • Visibility: the narrowest that compiles (pub(super) for siblings, pub(crate) elsewhere in the crate), plus the use, mod and impl X { lines around moved items.
  • Per-OS modules: #[cfg(...)] #[path = "ffi/window/<os>.rs"] mod window; (vst3-host) and #[path = "ffi/hostwin/<os>.rs"] mod hostwin; (clap-host).
  • app/control.rs shares its name with the crate-root control module, so seven calls in app.rs and app/input.rs are written crate::control::….
  • playback lib.rs: the imports of stalled and guarded_block carry the cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32")) their definitions have.
  • engine io/session.rs: add_source is imported under #[cfg(test)], since only its tests use it.
  • docs/commit-multichannel.md and docs/contributors.md name the new source paths.
  • Test commit: the engine file_access scan cut each file at its first #[cfg(test)]. Split files now start with #[cfg(test)] use lines, so four io/ files went unscanned. The scan now cuts only at an inline #[cfg(test)] mod … {. With the change, a std::fs call planted below such a use line fails the test.
  • engine io.rs keeps every function that touches the file system (std::fs, .exists(), .is_file(), .is_dir(), canonicalize), because the file_access test exempts that one file.

pure-move-check over the range: 40 of 43 commits pass. One is the scan test commit above. The two others: the playback split, where rustfmt rewrapped signatures that gained pub(crate) and the import gained its cfg, and the app/ split, with the seven crate::control:: paths above.

Checks

  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo xtask wasm and cargo fmt --all --check are clean. The wasm check's one warning (updates_ui::tick unused on wasm) is on main too.
  • cargo check for aarch64-apple-darwin passes for engine, video, dsp, mix, playback, vst3-host and clap-host. For ui-egui and the app, the ring build script fails on this Linux host for that target, so those two weren't checked for macOS, and PR CI has no macOS jobs. For x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, cargo xwin clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings passes for ui-egui and the app, and cargo check passes for the other crates above.
  • x86_64-pc-windows-gnu check of vst3-host and clap-host passes.

After the freeze

  • Split dialogs.rs show() (one ~490-line match) into one function per dialog, then dialogs/<dialog>.rs.
  • Rewrite callers of the moved modules to crate::panels::… and crate::dialogs::…, and remove the aliases.
  • Move the file-system functions left in engine io.rs (export_clips, write_session, session_file, replaces, same_path, read_bundle, plan_takes, the bounce writer and the save helpers) into io/ once the file_access scan test exempts the io/ directory.
  • Split tests.rs and edit_window/tests.rs (about 1,500 lines each) by topic.

Walkthrough

The pull request extracts existing implementations and tests into modules. It adds CLAP and VST3 hosting, session and media operations, mixer and playback behavior, and application and UI workflows. It also adds regression coverage across these areas.

Changes: SoundCraft runtime and UI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Logging, sampler, and command test modules
apps/soundcraft/src/logging*, crates/dsp/src/plugins/sampler*, crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/edit/*
Inline tests move into external test modules. The tests cover logging, sampler playback, command behavior, and editing operations.
Engine I/O
crates/engine/src/io*
I/O implementations are split into modules for bundles, imports, MIDI, recordings, rendering, sessions, and Strip Silence. The changes include session bundles, media handling, rendering operations, and recording placement.
Mixer and playback
crates/mix/src/*, crates/playback/src/*
Mixer functionality adds routing, automation, plugin processing, offline rendering, meters, and strip threading. Playback adds callback handling, output-stream selection, device conversion, fault reporting, and plugin lifecycle management.
CLAP and VST3 hosting
crates/clap-host/src/ffi/*, crates/vst3-host/src/ffi/*
The host modules add binary loading, plugin instances, event and state processing, editor lifecycle handling, host callbacks, and platform-specific windows.
Application lifecycle and controls
crates/ui-egui/src/app/*, crates/ui-egui/src/control*
Application workflows add command handling, transport, recording, autosave, audio recovery, plugin-state persistence, synthetic-input handling, and associated tests.
Dialogs and editor UI
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs*, crates/ui-egui/src/edit_window/*, crates/ui-egui/src/mix_window*, crates/ui-egui/src/panels*, crates/ui-egui/src/services.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/state.rs
UI modules add dialog workflows, timeline display and editing, mixer menus and controls, panels, and application state and service types.
File-access test and documentation references
crates/engine/src/file_access.rs, docs/*
The file-access test locates the trailing inline test module before scanning production lines. Documentation links point to the extracted implementation locations.

Suggested reviewers: isaac-levine

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to aabe5

VST3 sessions can silently lose controller state, while large bundles and failed plugin connections can cause resource or runtime failures; these issues should be fixed before merge.

Architecture risk: Low · up to aabe5

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/soundcraft/src/logging.rs: Replaces the inline test module with an external tests module declaration.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/soundcraft/src/logging/tests.rs: Adds private helpers for uniquely named temporary directories, reading files, submitting log records, and running a closure on a thread marked as the realtime audio thread.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/soundcraft/src/logging/tests.rs: Adds filter tests for defaults, most-specific directives, module-boundary and wildcard matching, bare targets, case-insensitive levels, and malformed or unusually large specifications. The assertions check that parsing and lookups do not panic and verify specified fallback results.
  • observed — Modified behavior in apps/soundcraft/src/logging/tests.rs: Adds timestamp assertions for epoch and millisecond formatting, leap days and century rules, pre-epoch clamping, years beyond 9999, and far-future instants where the platform can represent them.

Major · Propagate controller state-load failures. · instance.rs:111-156

crates/vst3-host/src/ffi/instance.rs:111-156
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Propagate controller state-load failures.

load_state ignores failures from the controller's setComponentState and setState calls. It then returns true. Callers treat that result as accepted state, refresh the remaining controller values, and include the instance in later state capture. A later save can therefore replace the session blob with component state plus stale controller state.

Return false when either controller operation fails.

Bound the total decoded audio when a bundle opens.

open_session_bytes checks the zip entry count and unpacked bytes through the shared read_bundle. It does not bound the decoded audio. Each source is decoded and kept in memory with no running total across sources. A crafted bundle can therefore hold more decoded audio than the 1 GiB limit that the writer applies.

The loop decodes each distinct source path and inserts the result into s.pool. decode_source caps each source only at MAX_IMPORT_SAMPLES (1 << 30 samples). A bundle with several compressed sources can decode to a combined size that the bundle limits do not cover. The writer accounts for the encoded float WAV bytes, while the reader accounts for the raw zip bytes. The two measures differ, so a bundle the writer would reject can still open.

Suggested remedy: keep a running total of decoded size in the loop, using the same byte measure as the writer's fits check. Refuse the open when the total exceeds BUNDLE_LIMITS.bytes. The exact accessor for decoded size is not confirmed here, so this is a direction, not a patch.

Handle connection failures before storing the connection pair.

instantiate ignores both IConnectionPoint::connect results. If the second call fails, it still returns an Instance with a partial connection. Drop then calls disconnect for both endpoints, including the connection that was never established. Roll back the first connection and return an error when either call fails.

aiongg merged commit 60087e0 into storytold:main Oct 27, 2026
6 checks passed
Limestudio90 added a commit to Limestudio90/soundcraft that referenced this pull request Oct 27, 2026
Upstream storytold#1120 moved the UI modules: the plugin picker now lives in
ui-egui/src/mix_window/plugin_menu.rs (mix_window.rs kept as the module, its
panels split out), windows.rs became panels/windows.rs and lib.rs's app state
and update moved to app.rs. Our background-scan work was re-applied there: the
picker and scan notice in mix_window/plugin_menu.rs and app.rs, the SoundApp
window call and UiState fields in panels/windows.rs and lib.rs, the scan child
and startup wiring in main.rs.

Upstream storytold#1120 split io.rs, cmd/file.rs, edit_window.rs and panels.rs into
folders: our import work now sits in io/import.rs (the width check in
place_import, import_audio_to_clip_list), cmd/file.rs plus its new
cmd/file/tests.rs, the drop routing in app/input.rs (route_dropped_files),
edit_window/input.rs (snap_drop) and panels/clips.rs (clip_list_rect); the
Services file-dialog hook stays in services.rs.
