The MIDI Editor stretched the whole clip across its width, with no zoom, ruler or playhead, and the Pencil, trims and velocity lane worked on one note at a time. This makes it usable for real editing, following Pro Tools for tools and modes.

Builds on #419 (audition) and #521 (selection follows moved notes). Both are merged into this branch, so the diff includes their commits until they land.

MIDI Editor

View

  • Ctrl/Cmd+wheel zooms time around the pointer (from twice the clip down to a 1/16 note at 120 px). Alt+wheel changes the row height. Shift+wheel scrolls sideways; the wheel alone scrolls the rows.
  • A bars ruler above the roll, with beat and grid lines in the roll, all counted on the session timeline (bar numbers match the Edit window). Clicking the ruler locates there.
  • The playhead crosses the roll while playing and pages along, following the Edit window's scrolling setting. The insertion point shows when stopped. The part past the clip end is shaded.

Notes

  • The Pencil draws a note as long as the drag; a click still adds a grid-length note. The note plays on the instrument while it is drawn (on top of MIDI Editor: holding a piano key or a note plays it on the instrument (#373) #419's audition).
  • Trimming either edge of a selected note trims every selected note by the same amount; a start trim keeps the end in place. Notes narrower than 10 px only move, so they aren't trimmed by accident.
  • Alt (Option)-drag copies the selection, like Option-drag in Pro Tools.
  • Moved, copied and trimmed notes stay selected, so the next edit applies to them.
  • Snapping follows the Edit mode: Grid snaps the grabbed note's edge to the grid, Relative Grid moves by whole grid steps, Slip/Shuffle/Spot move freely. Ctrl/Cmd held while dragging suspends or enables the grid for that drag.
  • Hovering shows the note's name, velocity, position and length next to the pointer; dragging shows the new position or length. The key under the pointer is highlighted and named.

Velocity lane

  • With notes selected, only their stems change, so one note of a chord can be set on its own (the others are dimmed).
  • Dragging draws across stems: every stem crossed since the last frame gets the value on the line, so fast strokes don't skip notes. One stroke is one undo step.

Controller lanes and the Pencil's shapes

MIDI Editor controller lanes

  • Controller lanes under the Velocity lane: CC 0–127, pitch bend, mono aftertouch and program change. Values are drawn as held steps until the next event, to the clip's end. The engine already played and chased Sequence.ctrls; this adds the editing.
  • Each MIDI track keeps its own lanes, saved with the session (Track.midi_lanes, serde(default), so older sessions open unchanged). The Velocity header's menu adds a lane, or every controller the clip uses ("Show Lanes with Data"). A lane header's menu changes the controller (common ones first, then every CC number) or removes the lane. Controllers the clip uses are marked.
  • Pencil shapes, as in Pro Tools: Free Hand, Line, Triangle, Square, Random, Parabolic, S-Curve. Triangle, Square and Random repeat at the grid and swing between the press value and the pointer. Shapes snap to the grid in Grid modes; Free Hand follows the pointer. One stroke replaces the events it spans and is one undo step. Pick the shape from the Pencil's right-click menu in the toolbar or the "Pencil:" menu in the MIDI Editor header. In the Velocity lane the shapes set the notes under the stroke; Free Hand keeps the existing stroke.
  • Grabber: a click on empty space adds an event on the grid. Dragging an event moves it in time and value; Alt-drag copies; Alt-click deletes; a drag on empty space selects with a rubber band. Trimmer: raises or lowers the selected events, or the whole lane when none are selected. Delete removes the selected events. Notes and controller events are never selected together.

Engine

  • midi.notes_move takes copy: true (the copies are moved, the originals stay).
  • New midi.notes_trim {clip, indices, start?, end?} moves the edges of several notes in one undo step.
  • Both return the notes' new indices after sorting (the helper from Keep MIDI note selection valid across clip, session and note-order changes (#443) #521, shared).
  • Controller events: midi.ctrls {clip, kind?}, midi.ctrl_add, midi.ctrls_move {indices, ticks?, value?, copy?} (returns the new indices), midi.ctrl_delete, and midi.ctrls_draw (Free Hand points, or a shape from from to to with the grid as period). An event landing on another event's tick (same kind and channel) replaces it, and values are clamped to the kind's range. midi.lanes {track, lanes} and edit.pencil_shape {shape} are not undo steps.
  • The shapes are pure functions in soundcraft-midi (PencilShape, ShapeStroke), capped at 10,000 points per stroke whatever the span or grid.

Tested

  • New crates/ui-egui/tests/midi_editor_gestures.rs drives real pointer events: Pencil drag length, Alt-drag copy and its undo, selection after a move past other notes, group trims (end, and start with the grid suspended), velocity on one chord note, a velocity stroke as one undo step, zoom anchored at the pointer. There are unit tests for grid snapping on the session timeline, the snap modifier, trim zones and labels, plus engine tests for copy and notes_trim.
  • Controller lanes: crates/ui-egui/tests/midi_cc_lanes.rs (layout, Line and Free Hand strokes, Grabber add/move/Alt-click, band + Delete, Trimmer, a Line in the Velocity lane, each stroke one undo step) and midi_lane_menus.rs (every header menu item, by its accessible name); engine tests for every command, including hostile spans and indices; unit tests for each shape.
  • cargo fmt --all --check, clippy --all-targets -D warnings (engine, ui-egui, mix, playback), all tests of those crates, xtask layers and xtask wasm pass. On Windows the engine's lib tests need the two local compile fixes already on main's list (file_access.rs upper.clone(), autosave.rs mut); they are not part of this PR.
  • Played by ear on Windows with a HISE instrument (Rhapsody) over ASIO: drawing, copying, trimming, velocity and zoom. The controller lanes were tested by hand in the app on Windows.

…strument (storytold#373)

The player takes note-on/off for a track's instrument outside the clips, and
renders while a note is held or releasing, so audition works with the
transport stopped. Stopped, the mix engine now runs instruments without their
clips and no longer treats the still position as a seek.

…-drag copies

- View: Ctrl/Cmd+wheel zooms time around the pointer, Alt+wheel the row height,
Shift+wheel scrolls sideways. A bars ruler with beat and grid lines on the
  session timeline; clicking it locates. The playhead pages along while playing;
the insertion point shows when stopped. Past the clip end is shaded.
- Notes: the Pencil draws a note as long as the drag (and plays it while held).
Trimming either edge of a selected note trims every selected note. Alt-drag
copies the selection. Moved, copied and trimmed notes stay selected.
- Snap follows the Edit mode (Grid, Relative Grid); Ctrl/Cmd held while
dragging suspends or enables it for that drag. Grid lines count from the
session start, so notes land on the timeline's beats wherever the clip starts.
- Velocity lane: with notes selected only theirs change (one note of a chord);
a stroke sets every stem it crosses, in one undo step.
- Note name, velocity, position and length next to the pointer; colours from
  the theme.
- Engine: midi.notes_move takes `copy`; new midi.notes_trim moves note edges of
several notes in one step; both return the notes' new indices.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 61b17

Auditioning during an instrument change can miss a note, and resetting playback can leave stopped audio processing active. Resolve these playback issues before merging unless their impact is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to a4239

The demonstrated impact remains within the current session and its audio playback. Live-note cleanup and Undo have state-lifecycle gaps that can cause continued background processing or unintended controller edits; no privilege or data-access escalation was verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Replacing a session while an audition note is held can orphan the audio thread's live-note accounting. Session replacement discards the editor's audition owner without sending its note-off. ResetSession sends Stop and Locate, which reset instrument voices but do not clear live_notes. Subsequent pointer release therefore has no recorded note to release, while the positive counter keeps stopped-session rendering enabled indefinitely. This newly introduced ownership mismatch affects resource cleanup across document replacement; transport reset silences voices but does not repair the accounting.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new controller-editing path retains positional selections across document rollback. Moving event A past event B updates the selection to A's new index; Undo restores the previous sequence but leaves that index selected, so a subsequent Delete can remove B instead. Active lane gestures likewise survive Undo and can commit against the restored sequence. This is a rollback-identity mismatch between transient editor state and document snapshots, bounded to the selected clip. Clip changes and session replacement clear the state, but Undo within the same clip does not.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the examined paths, command input targets clips or tracks in the current session, while audition targets already instantiated track instruments. The demonstrated affected scope is the active document and its audio mix. These traces do not establish broader service, tenant, credential, or infrastructure exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — New controller commands parse kind identifiers through a range-restricted parser, normalize values and nonnegative ticks, clamp explicitly supplied channels, and reject missing or non-MIDI clip targets. The existing playback message conversion independently restricts MIDI values and controller/key numbers. These controls oppose a direct malformed-command-to-invalid-MIDI path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Pencil generation bounds iteration and allocation even for extreme tick spans: free-hand command input takes at most 10,000 points, while generated shapes use capped sampling and corner sequences. This bounds per-stroke expansion, not total session size or repeated command volume.

The start was clamped to the new end, so a note shrunk past its start moved
earlier (a note at 960 trimmed 240 ticks from its end landed at 839), unlike
the editor's preview. The start is now limited by the old end and the end by
the new start.

🟡 Minor · Preserve note identity when returning moved indices. · midi.rs:183-196

crates/engine/src/cmd/midi.rs:183-196
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve note identity when returning moved indices.

relocate matches notes by value, not identity. If a move or copy produces a Note equal to an existing note, .position(...) can return the existing note's index. The editor then assigns that index to app.midi.selected, so the moved or copied note is not selected. This is reachable through normal moves and Alt-drag copies.

Controller lanes sit under the Velocity lane: CC 0-127, pitch bend, mono
aftertouch and program change, drawn as values held until the next event.
Each MIDI track keeps its own lanes (saved with the session); a lane header
menu adds, changes or removes them and marks the controllers the clip uses.

In a lane the Pencil draws with the current shape (Free Hand, Line,
Triangle, Square, Random, Parabolic, S-Curve; the periodic ones repeat at
the grid), the Grabber adds, selects and drags events (Alt-drag copies,
Alt-click deletes, rubber band on empty space), the Trimmer raises or
lowers the selected events (or the whole lane), Delete removes them.
In the Velocity lane the Pencil's shapes set the notes under the stroke.
The shape is chosen from the Pencil's right-click menu or the MIDI Editor
header.

Commands: midi.ctrls, midi.ctrl_add, midi.ctrls_move, midi.ctrl_delete,
midi.ctrls_draw (points or a shape), midi.lanes, edit.pencil_shape.

Comment thread crates/ui-egui/src/midi_lanes.rs Resolved
A session file could carry lanes that midi.lanes rejects (an id that does
not round-trip through CtrlKind::from_id, duplicates, a lane on a non-MIDI
track, or an unbounded list). The header menu sends the whole list back
through midi.lanes, so one bad lane made every edit of that track's lanes
fail, and a very long list left the MIDI Editor with no roll and no
headers. Apply the same rules the command enforces: keep ids that parse,
drop duplicates, cap at 128, clear lanes on tracks that are not MIDI.
lane_heights promised at most 60% of the available height, but the
VEL_MIN and LANE_MIN floors broke that cap once a track had many lanes:
the roll rect went non-positive and midi_editor::show returned before
lane_headers ran, leaving a blank editor with no way to remove a lane.
A clip with poly aftertouch has one kind per pitch, so this was reachable
without any unusual input.

Give the Velocity lane its floor first and split what remains between the
controller lanes, which may shrink below LANE_MIN. The editor also keeps
MIN_ROLL_H of roll and shrinks the whole band to fit, covering the case
where the gaps alone fill the cap.
Main's own notes_move test and this branch's helpers keep one copy; the MIDI
Editor test suite and the controller lanes stay as they were.
Upstream split mix into strip/instances/click/pan/routing/threads and moved
playback's audio callback and midi_editor into their own modules; the MIDI
Editor rewrite followed: live_note and the stopped-monitor render guard landed
in mix/lib+strip, audition plumbing in playback/callback, and the editor plus
midi_lanes at panels/midi_editor.rs and midi_lanes.rs.

CI on Linux announced the submenu arrow differently and the tests looked for it by
name. The text is what matters; the first node carrying it is the button.

Eight related PRs, green and up to date with main

@aiongg @skylartaylor — since #484 went in with the integration batch (#1011), these eight have been rebased after every module move (#1120, #1136) and are now mergeable and green. Nothing in them changed beyond the rebases and the egui 0.37 / RFC-0012 API fixes those forced:

Every CodeRabbit finding is answered in-thread, and each branch carries the tests for what it changes.

What is missing for these to be looked at? If one of them is unwanted, or too large to review as it stands, say so and I'll close it — a no is more useful than silence.

I'm not going to do another month of rebases: either they get looked at, or I close them, or I leave them as they are.
