Closes #700

Summary

This PR advances Pro Tools parity by completing missing engine commands, closing documented Mix Window view gaps, and expanding UI window controls:

  1. Options Menu: 41/41 (100% complete)

    • Implemented options.activate_heat (Options > Activate HEAT) with live checked state and session edit flags.
  2. Setup Menu: 19/19 (100% complete)

    • Implemented setup.machine_track_arming_profiles (Setup > Machine Track Arming Profiles...).
  3. File Import Parity

    • Implemented file.import_venue_channel_names (File > Import > VENUE Channel Names as Track Names), supporting file or programmatic channel array imports to rename session tracks.
  4. Track Width Commands

    • Implemented track.change_width_show_hide (Track > Change Track Width > Show / Hide...).
  5. Mix Window Views (docs/ui-parity.md)

    • Added HEAT view strip section with toggleable harmonic enhancement state.
    • Added Delay Compensation view strip section (DLY COMP) with latency sample readouts and toggle.
    • Mapped View > Mix Window Views > HEAT and View > Mix Window Views > Delay Compensation in mix_view_aliases.
  6. Window Management

    • Added Window > Machine Track Arming floating panel (window.machine_track_arming).
    • Added Window > Workspaces > Send to Back (window.workspace_back).
  7. Parity Ratchet & Quality Gates

    • Ratcheted engine parity floor from 396 to 401 (78.3%).
    • Overall menu parity rose from 482/512 to 486/512 (94.9%).
    • Updated ROADMAP.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md, and regenerated docs/parity-checklist.md.
    • Comprehensive unit tests added in crates/engine/src/cmd/ and crates/ui-egui/src/.
    • Passes cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, test, assets, layers, wasm).

First-pass review notes (automated; combined from specialist angles: security, tests, maintainability, correctness and error handling, UI code, user experience, docs and text, API and interfaces). Please treat as suggestions and verify before acting.

Summary: PR #701 adds Pro Tools parity commands and views: options.activate_heat, setup.machine_track_arming_profiles, file.import_venue_channel_names, track.change_width_show_hide, HEAT and Delay Compensation sections in the Mix Window, a Machine Track Arming window, window.workspace_back, and updated parity counts and docs.

Logical units: HEAT activation command; Machine Track Arming profiles command; VENUE channel-name import; Track width Show/Hide command; Mix Window HEAT and Delay Compensation views; Machine Track Arming window and Workspace Send to Back; parity ratchet, docs, and tests.

Findings:

  • [security] crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, import_venue_channel_names: crate::io::read_file(path) loads an unbounded arbitrary file and returns parsed lines in the JSON response, risking memory exhaustion and local-file disclosure. Cap file size (e.g. 1 MiB), cap the number of names, and do not echo file contents beyond the renamed count.
  • [correctness] crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, run_ui_command: window.workspace_back shares the window.workspace_close arm and sets show_workspace = false, so Send to Back closes the workspace. Give it its own arm that only changes z-order and leaves the workspace open, and add a test asserting it does not hide the workspace.
  • [ui] crates/ui-egui/src/mix_window.rs, strip delay-compensation section: the label is hardcoded to "0 dly" when enabled, so every track shows 0 samples regardless of latency. Display the track/session's real delay-compensation value, or show a neutral status such as "ON" until available.
  • [ui] crates/ui-egui/src/windows.rs, machine_track_arming: the window is read-only status text listing ARMED/SAFE, with no arm/disarm controls and no display or selection of the profiles from setup.machine_track_arming_profiles. Add per-track arm toggles and active-profile display/selection, or rename it to a status viewer.
  • [api] crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, import_venue_channel_names: start_track out of range, negative, or non-integer silently defaults to 0 or returns renamed: 0 with success, excess names are silently dropped by zip while all input names are returned, supplying both path and names silently prefers names, and names over 64 chars are silently truncated. Validate start_track as a non-negative integer within track count, error on excess names or return only applied names, define precedence or reject both inputs, enforce size/count limits, and return a validation error for overlong names.
  • [security] crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, import_venue_channel_names: the caller-supplied names array has no count limit and duplicates are accepted, breaking track-name uniqueness relied on by track_by_name. Limit the array to the number of tracks from start_track and reject or de-duplicate names.
  • [security] crates/engine/src/cmd/track.rs, change_width_show_hide: each formats entry is interpolated unsanitized into the persistent flag key track.width_visible.{item} with no count, length, or allowlist check. Validate entries against a fixed set of known width formats and cap array size and entry length.
  • [api] crates/engine/src/cmd/setup_more.rs, machine_track_arming_profiles: profiles are stored as list.join("|") and split on |, so a profile containing | corrupts on round-trip and an empty list round-trips as [""]; non-string entries are silently dropped, active is not checked against profiles, and there is no per-item length limit. Store a structured list, or reject/escape |, handle the empty list explicitly, validate entries are strings, check active is in profiles, and cap item length.
  • [ux] crates/ui-egui/src/mix_window.rs, strip HEAT and DLY COMP sections: both buttons toggle a global session option but are repeated on every strip with no global indicator, so they read as per-track controls. Label them as global or move the toggle out of the per-strip area.
  • [ux] crates/ui-egui/src/mix_window.rs, strip: HEAT is only rendered when has_input is true while DLY COMP is always rendered, so strip heights differ and sections misalign. Render both sections consistently for all strip types.
  • [tests] crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs, import_venue_channel_names: tests cover only the happy path for names and tab-separated file input. Add tests for start_track offset and out-of-range, missing/empty input errors, and comma/colon parsing.
  • [ux] crates/ui-egui/src/windows.rs, machine_track_arming: rows use format!("Ch {:02}: {:<16}", ...) in a proportional font, so the status column does not align and long names overflow the 340px window, with no empty state. Use a table/columns with truncation and add an empty state when the session has no tracks.
  • [ux] crates/ui-egui/src/mix_window.rs, strip HEAT/DLY COMP buttons: in narrow mode the fixed "HEAT"/"BYP" and "0 dly" labels are sized to inner_w - 4.0 with no truncation or icon fallback and can clip. Shorten the labels or hide text in narrow mode.
  • [docs] docs/ui-parity.md, Mix window row: marks HEAT and Delay Compensation as complete, which is not supported by the hardcoded delay readout and global-toggle issues above. Correct the status or complete the implementation before marking it complete.

Overlaps: None listed.

Verdict: Needs changes. The 3 most important points are: (1) the unbounded file read and file-content echo in import_venue_channel_names; (2) window.workspace_back closing the workspace instead of sending it to back; (3) the hardcoded "0 dly" delay-compensation readout, which makes the new view unverifiable.

Several newly added features do not fully work as documented. The hide-width command does not change the menu. The arming-profiles menu opens a window that cannot manage profiles. The individual HEAT and Delay Compensation view toggles may stay disabled. Some tracks show arm buttons that do nothing. These gaps are bounded and not catastrophic, but they should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names three changes that the changeset implements: HEAT and Delay Compensation mixer views, VENUE channel-name import, and machine track arming. The raw summary confirms each. The title does not mention the Send to Back window command or the track-width command, but it does not need to cover every detail. The title is a single sentence and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #700 is the only directly linked issue, and it is open. Its coding requirements are grouped below.

(1) Engine commands [#700]: options.activate_heat, setup.machine_track_arming_profiles, file.import_venue_channel_names, and track.change_width_show_hide. The whole-PR summary places them in crates/engine/src/cmd/setup_more.rs, file.rs, and track.rs, each with unit tests. Input validation and limits are described for each. The command bodies were not inspected in this review, so this finding relies on the summary.

(2) Mix Window HEAT and Delay Compensation (DLY COMP) strip sections [#700]: mix_window.rs adds a HEAT section gated by the heat view and a DLY COMP section gated by the delay_compensation view. menus.rs maps both views and includes them in the All view.

(3) Window > Machine Track Arming panel and Window > Workspaces > Send to Back [#700]: lib.rs adds the show_machine_track_arming and workspace_send_to_back flags. menus.rs maps the commands. windows.rs renders the panel and applies Send to Back. tests.rs covers both.

(4) Parity floor and progress documents [#700]: catalog.rs asserts at least 401 implemented items, which matches the requested ratchet from 396 to 401. The current ROADMAP.md diff changes only the menu-breadth headline line. docs/ui-parity.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, and docs/parity-checklist.md are updated.

Not a linked requirement: the PR description says DLY COMP shows latency sample readouts. The code shows a session-wide toggle. docs/ui-parity.md marks per-track readouts as pending engine reporting. #700 does not require per-track readouts.

Minor discrepancies, not coding requirements: (a) #700 and the PR description cite 78.3%, but catalog.rs asserts pct >= 78.0. The count floor of 401 matches. (b) The PR description states overall menu parity of 486/512 (94.9%), but ROADMAP.md states 490/512 (95.7%). The author should reconcile these figures in documentation. Neither discrepancy leaves a #700 coding requirement unmet.

No unmet coding requirement was found.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area maps to an objective in #700 or supports one.

  • Engine command files (setup_more.rs, track.rs, file.rs, file/tests.rs): implement the required commands and their tests.
  • io.rs read_file_capped: supports the file-path input of file.import_venue_channel_names. It caps reads at 1 MiB. Its use is limited to the import path in the summary.
  • catalog.rs: the required parity-floor ratchet. The diff changes only the two assertions.
  • ui-egui lib.rs, menus.rs, panels/windows.rs, tests.rs: implement the Machine Track Arming window, the Send to Back mapping, the HEAT and DLY COMP views, and their tests. The windows.rs Workspace unique-ID change supports Send to Back.
  • mix_window.rs: implements the HEAT and DLY COMP strip sections.
  • docs/parity-checklist.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md: progress-document updates that #700 requests.
  • ROADMAP.md: the diff now changes only the menu-breadth headline line. The cosmetic table re-alignment noted in the previous review is no longer present.

No functional change was found that lacks a connection to #700.

Thanks for the detailed review! I have addressed all 14 points in commit c87c3fd:

  • Security & file reading (file.import_venue_channel_names):

    • Added read_file_capped with a 1 MiB limit checking file metadata before loading and respecting automation boundaries.
    • Returns only applied names (names.len() == renamed) rather than echoing raw input.
    • Added full parameter validation: mutually exclusive path and names, non-negative integer start_track checked against track count, non-empty names with max 64 characters, and errors if excess names exceed available tracks.
    • Enforced track name uniqueness: rejects duplicates in input names and collisions against existing unrenamed tracks.
    • Added tests for start_track offsets, boundary conditions, tab/comma/colon delimited files, size limits, and validation errors.
  • Security (track.change_width_show_hide):

    • Validates inputs against ALLOWED_WIDTH_FORMATS allowlist.
    • Capped array to 64 items and format strings to 32 characters, normalizing aliases before storing flags. Added unit test.
  • API & storage (setup.machine_track_arming_profiles):

    • Replaced delimiter-based string splitting with structured JSON serialization to avoid corruption with |.
    • Explicitly handles empty lists [], validates strings and length caps, and validates that active exists in profiles. Added unit test.
  • Workspace Send to Back (window.workspace_back):

    • Separated window.workspace_back into its own command arm that keeps show_workspace = true and updates window z-order.
    • Added a test verifying window.workspace_back leaves the workspace open.
  • Mix Window HEAT & Delay Compensation views:

    • Replaced hardcoded "0 dly" with a neutral readout ("CMP ON" / "CMP OFF", or "ON" / "OFF" in narrow mode) and descriptive tooltips.
    • Rendered both HEAT and Delay Compensation consistently across all strip types at uniform 34px height to prevent strip misalignment.
    • Added (GLOBAL) indicator to headers and adaptive short labels ("HT" / "BYP") for narrow mode.
  • Machine Track Arming Window:

    • Added active profile selection dropdown (craft_ui::ComboBox).
    • Added interactive per-track record-arm toggle buttons (ARMED / SAFE) that dispatch mix.record_arm.
    • Styled with a structured striped grid (egui::Grid) with column headers, track name truncation, and empty state when no tracks exist.
  • Docs & Parity:

    • Updated docs/ui-parity.md to partial status (🟡) reflecting view toggles/status indicators present while per-track latency readouts await engine reporting.
    • Ratcheted catalog.rs parity floor to 78.0% and 401 commands, and updated docs/parity-checklist.md, ROADMAP.md, and docs/target-app-parity.md.

Bound the read itself, not only the metadata length.

read_file_capped checks meta.len() and then calls std::fs::read(path). If the file grows between the two calls, the read has no upper bound. The 1 MiB cap can then be exceeded, and the oversized data is decoded and parsed.

read_file_within in the same file already avoids this. It reads through take(limit + 1) and re-checks the length afterward. Apply the same approach here.

Make the scratch directory cleanup panic-safe.

The test uses a PID-named directory in the shared temp folder. It resets the directory before use. It removes the directory only on the last line. If any earlier assert! or unwrap() panics, the directory and its files remain. No exclusive lock protects the path.

Use an RAII guard whose Drop removes the directory. Alternatively, reuse an existing temp-directory helper in this test module if one exists.

Based on learnings: tests that create filesystem state must use isolated temporary directories with cleanup, or shared scratch directories with exclusive locking, reset before use, and cleanup afterward.

The fallback profile lists differ between the engine and the window.

The engine falls back to three default names when the stored JSON is invalid. The Machine Track Arming window falls back to ["Default"] in the same case. Use one shared helper or constant for the fallback so both consumers agree.

Enable the two documented Mix Window view toggles.

This row says that the HEAT and Delay Compensation view toggles are present. Both views are off by default, and mix_view_aliases() omits both menu paths. item_state() therefore disables their individual menu items. Add both paths to mix_view_aliases() so users can show either section without selecting All. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @docs/ui-parity.md at line 47:
Add the HEAT and Delay Compensation menu paths to mix_view_aliases() so
item_state() enables each view toggle independently when its section is off by
default. Preserve the existing behavior of the other Mix Window aliases.

Open profile management from the Setup entry.

Setup > Machine Track Arming Profiles... opens the status window. That window only selects existing profiles and toggles track arms; it cannot create, rename, or remove a profile. Users cannot manage profiles through this menu. Add profile-management controls or route the Setup entry to a dedicated editor. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not offer an arm toggle for non-recordable tracks.

The grid includes master, aux, and other tracks without playlists. Their SAFE buttons call mix.record_arm, but that command changes record_arm only for tracks whose kind has a playlist. A click on those buttons has no visible effect. Omit those rows or disable their buttons with an explanation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the track collection used by the SAFE-button grid so non-recordable
tracks are omitted or their buttons are disabled with an explanation; determine
recordability from the track kind’s playlist capability, and preserve the
existing arm behavior for recordable tracks.

Apply width visibility to the menu.

track.change_width_show_hide stores track.width_visible.* flags, but menus::tree and menus::menu_node do not read them. Hiding a format therefore leaves its menu entry visible. Make the menu consume the stored visibility state, and represent “hidden” distinctly from an unset default. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
