Summary

Record-arm and input-monitoring states were stored in session files and restored when reopening a session. This could automatically activate an input path without an explicit user action.

This change treats both states as live runtime state:

  • they are no longer serialized or restored;
  • values stored by older versions are ignored;
  • changing them does not mark the session as modified;
  • their commands do not create Undo/Redo entries;
  • unrelated Undo/Redo operations preserve their current live values;
  • loading a track preset preserves the current arm and monitoring states.

Closes #781

Upstream compatibility

Updated against official main (1db9563), preserving #1120's module layout and #1181's saved-state comparison without cloning document data. Live state restoration uses track IDs in linear time and retains shared snapshots when no flags need changing.

Tracks restored after being absent start with record-arm and input monitoring disabled. Existing tracks retain their current live states through Undo/Redo, including at saved history points.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check passed
  • cargo clippy -p soundcraft-model -p soundcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings passed
  • 57/57 model unit tests passed
  • Targeted live-state, saved-state comparison, Undo/Redo, track-preset and autosave-recovery tests passed
  • Local docstring audit: 23/23 added or modified functions documented, including tests
  • Full cargo xtask ci launched separately; its results and the automated review have not been checked

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Recording and input-monitoring changes remain active through undo and redo without creating undo entries or marking the session as modified. Tracks restored through history start with these states disabled.
    • Loading a track preset preserves the destination track’s routing, VCA assignment, recording and input-monitoring states, and pan when preset pan dimensions differ.
    • Session files no longer save or restore recording and input-monitoring states; these states are disabled when loading a session.
    • Recovery preserves saved track volume while disabling recording and input-monitoring states.

Walkthrough

Record-arm and input-monitor states are treated as runtime state. The changes exclude them from session serialization, dirty-state comparison, and document undo/redo. Commands update runtime state, and preset loading preserves destination states.

Changes: Transient Input State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exclude live input states from sessions
crates/model/src/mixer.rs, crates/model/src/session.rs, crates/engine/src/autosave.rs
Mixer serialization skips record_arm and input_monitor. Tests verify that session loading and autosave recovery leave these states disabled while preserving persistent mixer settings.
Keep live states outside document history
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/dirty.rs
runtime_session_mut changes runtime session state without marking the document dirty. Undo and redo retain current track states. Document equality ignores live input states and compares persistent track and mixer fields.
Update input states through runtime commands
crates/engine/src/cmd/mix.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/track.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/track_more.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/mix/tests.rs
Mix commands and track.set_record_to_input_only use runtime state. Preset loading retains destination input states and preserves destination pan when vector lengths differ. Tests cover command history, restored tracks, and preset loading.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The affected state belongs to tracks in the current engine session. Explicit mixer commands target resolved tracks; the input-only command can enable monitoring for every currently armed track in that session.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — File-provided activation flags no longer determine live input activation during session deserialization. Preset loading also preserves the destination track's current arm and monitoring flags instead of allowing preset mixer data to replace them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Runtime commands use the existing exclusive mutable engine interface and copy-on-write session access. The command wrapper restores the prior document and dirty state on command error or caught panic. Preset parsing completes before session mutation, limiting partially applied live-state transitions.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(engine): keep live input states transient" names the main change. The PR makes record-arm and input-monitor flags runtime-only: they are not serialized, not restored, not dirty-tracked, and not added to undo history. The title is specific, short, and uses conventional commit prefix style. It does not list files or use vague terms.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #781 is the only active requirement source. Requirements: live arm and monitor states work while the session is open; save, autosave, and reopen do not store them; loading sets both to false; legacy files with true values are ignored; changes do not dirty the session or add Undo/Redo entries; persistent mixer and routing data still save and restore. Evidence at the reviewed head: (1) crates/engine/src/dirty.rs, read directly at head: track_values compares persistent track fields, and mixer_values destructures Mixer with record_arm: _ and input_monitor: _. Live flags therefore do not affect dirty-state equality, while all other mixer fields still do. The destructuring has no .., so new fields must be decided explicitly. (2) The previous assessment, recorded at this head, read crates/model/src/mixer.rs (#[serde(skip)] on both flags, so saves omit them and loads default them to false), crates/engine/src/lib.rs (undo and redo keep current live flags), and crates/engine/src/cmd/track_more.rs (load_preset keeps destination input_monitor with record_arm). (3) The PR summary states that live toggles in cmd/mix.rs and cmd/track.rs use runtime_session_mut and are marked noundo, and it lists tests for serialization, legacy JSON, autosave recovery, undo/redo, dirty state, and preset loading. In this review, mixer.rs was truncated before the Mixer struct, and the diff blobs were unavailable, so I could not re-read the serde, lib.rs, and cmd changes directly. I did not run the tests. The result relies on the previous source-level review at this head plus the verified dirty.rs. No requirement was found unmet.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed areas support #781. Model: #[serde(skip)] on Mixer.record_arm and Mixer.input_monitor, plus a session test for omitted keys and legacy JSON. Engine: runtime_session_mut (crate-private), undo and redo retention of live flags, noundo live commands in cmd/mix.rs and cmd/track.rs, and dirty-state exclusion in dirty.rs. load_preset in cmd/track_more.rs adds only input_monitor to the destination-preserving logic that already kept routes, VCA, and pan. The added tests cover the transient behavior. Autosave and undo tests verify the same behavior. I found no unrelated feature or audio stream lifecycle change. The dirty.rs source read at head confirms that only the two live flags are excluded from equality. The unread files were checked only through the previous review and the PR summary.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 9 files.

Cover enabled states during history operations.

The test edits the document while both live states are enabled, then disables them before undo and redo. It only detects restoration of historical true values over current false values. A regression that restores historical false values over currently enabled states remains undetected.

COMMENTEDnnI reviewed the transient live input state changes and their persistence, recovery, undo, and audio dependencies and found no confirmed source-level blocker. The in-session track duplication behavior copies live arm/monitor flags, and issue #781 does not prohibit that. I could not verify an applicable successful execution receipt, so execution validation remains unconfirmed; I did not run tests or builds for this publication task.

Review Summary

Verdict: Ready

I conducted an adversarial code review of this PR across persistence, saved-state invariants, document history (undo/redo), audio graph reactivity, track presets, and autosave recovery.

Key Observations & Verification

  • Model Serialization (crates/model/src/mixer.rs, session.rs): Marking record_arm and input_monitor with #[serde(skip)] correctly excludes them from session files, autosave files, and track presets. Deserialization correctly ignores legacy fields and defaults them safely to false.
  • Saved-State Comparison (crates/engine/src/dirty.rs): same_document compares persistent track and mixer fields exhaustively without allocating or copying, ignoring live input flags while ensuring all other 14 mixer fields still contribute to session dirtiness.
  • Document History (crates/engine/src/lib.rs): keep_runtime_track_states properly carries live input flags across undo/redo operations. Restored tracks absent from the current state return safely disarmed. When flags already match, copy-on-write Arc detachment is avoided.
  • Track Presets & Autosave (crates/engine/src/cmd/track_more.rs, autosave.rs): track.load_preset preserves destination track live flags and routing; autosave recovery restores edits with live input states disarmed.
  • Validation: Full workspace tests (cargo test --workspace), cargo clippy (with -D warnings), cargo fmt, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask wasm, and cargo xtask parity all pass cleanly.

No blocking issues, regressions, or defect findings were identified.

Reviewed current head d393730 across all nine changed files and the command execution/history paths. No blocking findings. Runtime arm/monitor flags are excluded from persistence and saved-state comparisons, preserved by track identity through Undo/Redo, and disabled for restored absent tracks. Preset loading retains live destination states. The earlier enabled-state test coverage comment is addressed.

Verified CI run 41990249102 for this exact head: cargo xtask ci passed fmt, clippy, tests, doctests, assets, layers and wasm; 1,740 tests passed, one skipped. Logs explicitly show the new serialization, history, saved-state, preset and autosave recovery regression tests passing. Validation evidence is from CI; no additional local run or source edits were needed.
