"Never let a Woevern tell you it's not worth the bother. That's the Woevern talking."
-- A HemsHollow saying

Overview

Woeverns are among the Children of Null, woven on the Last Loom in the Observatory of the Obscure and set loose along the Fraying to hasten the Void's work. They were first named in the tellings of HemsHollow, and few who have met one like to talk about it for long.

Appearance

A Woevern is a long, low, wyvern-like creature of drooping grey felt, with ragged wings like wet washing and a tail that drags in the dust. It moves slowly, sighing as it goes, and where it settles, colour drains from the cloth around it.

Hunger

Like all the Fray, Woeverns will eat any of the three gifts of the FirstSpun, but they favour Spirit: the warmth, hope and togetherness that keep a community passing things on. A Woevern does not snatch or bite. It breathes out a grey, drizzling mist of woe, and anyone caught in it starts to feel that nothing is worth the bother: why light the lamps, why finish the story, why turn up at all. As the mist settles, gatherings thin out, songs go unsung and fires go unlit, and the Woevern feeds on everything that is no longer shared.

Keeping Them Away

Woeverns cannot be ended for good, not while Null still holds the tools to weave more, but they can be driven off. Their mist cannot settle where people gather, laugh, sing and look after one another. A crowd that keeps coming back, a fire that is always tended, and a story told all the way to its happy ending are enough to send a Woevern sighing away to look for somewhere lonelier.
