Add Fade In, Fade Out and Crossfade dialogs, opened by double-click or Cmd+F - #976
Edit > Fades > Create (Cmd+F) opens a plain list of shapes. The chosen shape goes to every fade the selection makes, so a crossfade cannot get a different shape on each side. There is no preview of the curve, and no S-Curve that keeps power constant (in² + out² = 1) the way Equal Power does.
A fade or crossfade that already exists cannot be opened. Double-clicking it just selects the clip.
The incumbent has one dialog per kind (Fade In, Fade Out, Crossfade), with the shapes and a graph of the curves over the clips. Its reference guide shows the crossfade one on p. 935 and says Cmd+F opens it (pp. 937, 939). After this PR:
Double-click a fade-in, a fade-out or a crossfade in the Edit window: its dialog opens on it, showing the shape it has now and naming its target. Double-clicking elsewhere on a clip still selects it. The Pencil, Zoom and Scrubber tools do not open it, and the clip-gain icon keeps its own double-click.
Cmd+F, or Edit > Fades > Create, over a selection that makes exactly one fade (a clip start, a clip end, or the joint of two clips that touch, on one track): the dialog for that spot opens on default settings. Any other selection still opens the existing single-shape dialog.
Fade In / Fade Out: a shape (Standard, S-Curve, or a preset curve with a thumbnail and a menu) and a slope (Equal Power or Equal Gain). Crossfade: In Shape, Link Out / In (Equal Power, Equal Gain or None) and Out Shape.
The graph draws the curves live from the dialog state over the clips' waveforms, in four display modes (curves only, one lane each, overlaid, combined), with a vertical waveform zoom.
Presets and COMPARE. Five preset slots per dialog (Cmd-click stores, click recalls), kept with the interface preferences, and a <factory default> entry. COMPARE shows the settings the dialog opened with; OK still applies what was edited.
OK is one edit.fades_create, so one undo step. On an existing fade or crossfade it does nothing when nothing changed. A bent fade keeps its bend while its preset curve stays chosen. Cancel and Esc change nothing, Enter is OK, and an open menu takes Enter and Esc before the dialog does.
The control labels (In Shape, Link Out / In, COMPARE, <factory default>) are the incumbent's names for these controls. No artwork is taken from it: every icon and the graph are drawn in code (icons.rs, fade_plot.rs).
Change
Two commits. The second builds on the first.
1. Open the Fades dialog on the fade or crossfade that is double-clicked. A double-click aims the existing dialog at that fade or crossfade, and edit.fades_create takes side: "crossfade" with the later clip of the pair, so both fades take the shape and keep their length in one command.
2. Fade In, Fade Out and Crossfade dialogs.
Model.FadeShape::SCurvePower is the S-Curve run through the Equal Power law, gain(t) = sin(S(t) * pi / 2) with S(t) = 0.5 - 0.5 * cos(pi * t), so in² + out² = 1 when the fade-out mirrors it. Standard / S-Curve with Equal Gain / Equal Power map onto Linear, S-Curve, Equal Power and the new shape; Exponential and Logarithmic are the preset curves.
Sessions that do not use it load unchanged. Older versions cannot open one that does (docs/file-format-parity.md says so).
FadeShape::from_id also answers to the variant name (SCurve, EqualPower, as sessions and logs spell them). The old labels resolve to the same shapes.
Engine.edit.fades_create takes optional in_shape and out_shape, which override shape for fade-ins (and the later clip of a crossfade) and for fade-outs (and the earlier one). They work in the range form, the {clip, side} form and the crossfade form, and a bad value is refused without an edit. shape alone still means both sides. create_fades takes an in and an out shape.
ops::fade_spots finds what create_fades would make over a range, without making it, so the dialog knows what a selection covers.
Link is not stored. A crossfade opens as Equal Gain or Equal Power when both sides share a shape with no bend, else as None.
UI.fade_dialog.rs holds the state and builds the one command, which says only what changed. fade_plot.rs draws the graph, icons.rs the display-mode icons, theme.rs gets one token (fade_combined).
docs/ui-parity.md and docs/file-format-parity.md are updated.
Testing
43 new tests:
crates/model (1): the S-Curve Equal Power law holds when mirrored, every shape answers to its label and its variant name, and the new shape round-trips through serde.
crates/engine unit tests (4): in_shape / out_shape per side in the {clip, side} and range forms (bad values are refused in the existing validation test), and fade_spots_match_what_create_fades_makes, which checks every range over three clips (two touching) against create_fades.
crates/engine/tests/it/crossfade_fades.rs (7): the crossfade form of the command (shapes, lengths, one undo step, only the later clip, bad shapes refused without an edit).
fade_dialog.rs unit tests (12): the shape and slope mapping both ways, link inference, preset slots (an unreadable slot loads empty without losing the other preferences), and the command saying only what changed.
crates/ui-egui/tests/it/fade_dialogs.rs (19), through the real app, headless: double-click on a fade and a crossfade (Smart tool halves, tools that do not open it, gain icon), Cmd+F over one start, one end or one joint (two joints keep the old dialog, moved clips make nothing), OK, Cancel, Enter, menus, preset slots, COMPARE and Link None.
Layout and colours are not asserted: the_three_dialogs_render_on_the_demo_session only checks that each dialog opens and renders. Preset slots are tested through UiState's serde, not the preferences file on disk.

One test was skipped locally: stored_state_comes_first_then_session_params. It loads the machine's installed VST3/AU plug-ins and hangs on this machine (the problem #763 addresses). On macOS, main itself does not build soundcraft-au-host since #988 (registry is missing from its explicit use super::{…}; Linux CI does not compile that crate). This run added that one-line import locally; it is not part of this PR.
Notes for review
Base. Up to date with main (fe4bb3f) through a merge commit.
fade_spots repeats the conditions of create_fades as they are on main: a joint is two clips that touch. Crossfades: store the cut, draw a zone, and select, slide, trim and delete it #975 changes them: a crossfade has a stored cut, a range over it replaces it, and a clip start or end hidden in the zone takes no fade. When both land, fade_spots must follow those rules. This PR's in-step test only uses clips that touch, so it will not catch the difference. The fix is to share the crossfade predicates between the two.
Duplicated colour.fade_combined in theme.rs (the combined waveform) has the same value as mode_grid_relative (dark and light) from Give each edit mode its own colour when it is active #969, which is not on main yet. Once that lands, use its token and drop this one.
Deliberate simplifications, each marked ponytail: in the code.
Preset curves have no linked partner: a linked crossfade has them disabled, and linking takes one back to Standard.
The command takes one bend for both sides of a crossfade, so removing the bend of one side also removes the bend of a bent fade left alone next to it. Per-side curvature is the way out.
The combined waveform adds the two clips' peaks, not their samples (an upper bound where they cancel), and is recomputed every frame.
fade_spots repeats the conditions of create_fades; a test keeps them in step.
Left out on purpose. Audition (it needs a live-preview design, and no inert button is drawn), dragging the curves in the graph, and Batch Fades.
Added editors for fade-ins, fade-outs, and crossfades, with curve previews, shape and slope controls, linking, five presets, compare mode, and four display options.
Double-click a supported fade or crossfade to open its editor, or create fades and crossfades from a selection.
Added the S-Curve Equal Power shape and separate shape choices for fade-ins and fade-outs.
Crossfade creation supports separate shapes for each side.
Bug Fixes
Crossfade edits preserve existing fade lengths where possible, using the overlap length when a fade has no length. Matching fades remain unchanged unless curvature is specified.
Double-clicking a fade-in or fade-out in the Edit window now opens the
Fades dialog aimed at that fade; double-clicking a crossfade aims it at the
pair. OK gives the chosen shape to what was aimed at, in one undo step. The
dialog opens on the shape the fade has, names its target, and OK on an
unchanged shape does nothing (the bend is kept). Double-clicking anywhere
else still selects the clip.
edit.fades_create takes side "crossfade" with the later clip of the pair:
both fades take the shape and keep their length, in one command.

Double-clicking a fade or a crossfade, or Edit > Fades > Create (Cmd+F) over a selection that is exactly one clip start, one clip end or one boundary between two clips, opens a dialog for it instead of the single-shape list.
Dialog: shape (Standard, S-Curve, or a preset curve with a thumbnail and menu) with a slope (Equal Power, Equal Gain), or for a crossfade In Shape, Link Out / In (Equal Power, Equal Gain, None) and Out Shape. The curves are drawn live from the dialog state over the waveforms of the clips, in four display modes (curves only, two lanes, overlaid, combined) with a vertical waveform zoom. Five preset slots per dialog (Cmd-click stores, click recalls) kept with the interface preferences, a <factory default> entry and COMPARE. OK is one edit.fades_create, so one undo step; Cancel and Esc change nothing, Enter is OK.
Model and engine:
- FadeShape gains SCurvePower, the S-Curve through the Equal Power law (in^2 + out^2 = 1 when mirrored). Sessions that do not use it load unchanged; older versions cannot open one that does.
- edit.fades_create takes optional in_shape and out_shape, overriding shape for fade-ins (the later clip of a crossfade) and fade-outs (the earlier one), in the range form, the {clip, side} form and the crossfade form.
- ops::fade_spots finds what create_fades would make over a range, so the dialog knows what a selection covers.
- Link is not stored: a crossfade opens as Equal Gain or Equal Power when both sides share a shape with no bend, else None.
The earlier "open the Fades dialog on the double-clicked fade" tests move to tests/fade_dialogs.rs and now drive the new dialogs.
Left out on purpose:
- Audition (needs a live-preview design); no inert button is drawn.
- Dragging the curves in the graph.
- Batch Fades.
Deliberate simplifications (marked ponytail in the code):
- Preset curves have no linked partner, so a linked crossfade has them disabled and linking takes one back to Standard.
- The command takes one bend for both sides of a crossfade, so removing the bend of one side also removes the other's.
- The combined waveform adds the two clips' peaks, not their samples.
- The combined-waveform colour is a new token with the REL GRID purple, until that token reaches main.

Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new explicit crossfade operation affects the named later clip and a resolved overlapping predecessor in the same active playlist of the current session. The broader track/range form remains available through the existing command interface; the specialized dialog emits one track and its captured range.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Command parameters cross from the UI into engine-owned mutation logic. The handler validates shape names, finite curvature, targeting form, clip identity, and crossfade topology before applying edits; it does not rely solely on dialog checks.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Document failure containment uses the existing command transaction: errors restore the pre-command document, and successful document changes receive undo snapshots. Crossfade partner validation precedes both assignments. Confirmation closes the dialog after one action, while cancellation submits no fade-edit command.

Reject a changed crossfade partner before issuing the command.
FadeEditor::for_target stores the original earlier clip in self.a, but command resolves the partner again from later. If the original partner is moved or removed while the dialog is open, this can resolve another overlapping clip. The engine then writes the new fade-out to that different clip.

Reject stale selection geometry before creating the fade.
The selection dialog remains open while the edit timeline can move or trim clips. The current check preserves only the FadeSpot identity. If the same clip or adjacent crossfade pair still matches, edit.fades_create applies the stored range to current geometry and can create a fade with a different location or length.
Store the selected clip ranges when for_selection opens the dialog, and reject the selection command when any stored range changes.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk: the schema of the fades.create command (Edit > Fades > Create..., Cmd+F) now takes in_shape? and out_shape? and a new shape, s-curve equal power, besides the clip form {clip, side, length, shape?, curvature?}; per the title Fade In, Fade Out and Crossfade dialogs are added, opened by a double click or Cmd+F. A fade dialog must show the shape with a preview curve, the length in the session's time scale (see the Grid and Nudge work in soundcraft#589), and apply as one undo step; for a crossfade the equal-power and equal-gain laws differ for correlated and uncorrelated material, and the default should say which. The length must be clamped to the clip (and to the overlap for a crossfade) with a clear message, and curvature must be range-checked (-1..1). Double-click as a trigger must not conflict with other double-click gestures on clips (rename, open). I did not read the dialogs. Add tests for each shape's end values (0 and 1), a fade longer than the clip, a crossfade without an overlap, and undo. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

fade_spotsrepeats the conditions ofcreate_fadesas they are on main: a joint is two clips that touch. Crossfades: store the cut, draw a zone, and select, slide, trim and delete it #975 changes them: a crossfade has a stored cut, a range over it replaces it, and a clip start or end hidden in the zone takes no fade. When both land,fade_spotsmust follow those rules. This PR's in-step test only uses clips that touch, so it will not catch the difference. The fix is to share the crossfade predicates between the two.edit_window::crossfade_partner(track, clip), which this PR makespub(crate). Crossfades: store the cut, draw a zone, and select, slide, trim and delete it #975 gives it a clip slice instead of a track and addsops::crossfade_earlier/crossfade_lateras the engine predicate.create_fadessignature: Crossfades: store the cut, draw a zone, and select, slide, trim and delete it #975 addscreate_fades_keeping_crossfades(Fade to Start / End), this PR givescreate_fadesan in and an out shape.fade_combinedintheme.rs(the combined waveform) has the same value asmode_grid_relative(dark and light) from Give each edit mode its own colour when it is active #969, which is not on main yet. Once that lands, use its token and drop this one.dialogs::showthat this PR rewrites, and the translation PRs (Localization: packed zh-hans catalogs, language preference and web Han font #783, Add complete Italian interface catalog #852, Import Session from a Pro Tools export (File > Import > Import Session...) #876, feat: add Korean (ko) interface translation #952) rewrap strings indialogs.rs,buttons_enabledincluded.ponytail:in the code.fade_spotsrepeats the conditions ofcreate_fades; a test keeps them in step.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
