"A coven is not a building, dear. It is a promise that someone will always be awake when you knock."

  • Noria NeedleNest - High KnitWitch of the Clothborn Coven

Overview

The Clothborn Coven is the ancient and magical house of the High KnitWitches, and the oldest continuous institution in Threadbare after the Eternal Loom itself. Where the KnitWitches are a people and a craft, the Coven is their home: the hearth they return to, the circle of circles that keeps their knowledge, and the door that has stayed open to the unwoven for longer than anyone has kept count.

The name is a plain statement of belief. KnitWitches hold that they were not made, but born of cloth: spun into the world mid-stitch, already wrinkled, wise, and knitting, somewhere in the long ages of the Great Weave. How that came to be, the Coven does not say. Ask a KnitWitch where the first of them came from and she will only smile and count her rows.

The Hearth

The Coven's home stands in Frays End, not far from the Eternal Loom, in a rambling, lopsided house that has never once been built so much as added to. Each High KnitWitch has knitted on a room or two in her time, the way a knitter adds rows, and so the house climbs and leans and doubles back on itself in a dozen different styles, with staircases that begin in one century and end in another. No two visitors agree on how many rooms it has. The KnitWitches find this question faintly rude.

At its heart is the hearth itself, a great, round fireplace that has not been allowed to go out in living memory. There is always a kettle on it, always a chair beside it, and, when Noria NeedleNest is at home, always a plate of her cinnamon biscuits within reach. It is here that the Coven takes in the unwoven, the heart-frayed, and the half-forgotten: Threadlings who have brushed too close to the Void, or lost the thread of their own story, or simply come apart a little at the seams. They are given tea, a blanket, and a seat by the fire, and in time they are sent back out into the world a stitch tidier.

Every room in the house carries at least one ward, worked invisibly into the fabric of the walls. Bram BackStitch keeps them, doubling every line, so that if one ward fails, the stitch behind it takes the strain. It is said that in all its long history, the Void has never once crossed the Coven's threshold.

A Sanctuary for Creatures

The Coven keeps no menagerie, and would be offended to be told it had one. Nevertheless, creatures turn up at the hearth, and they are never turned away. Hushrooms take root in the damp corners of the cellar and are left to glow there in peace. Wrens nest in the eaves, and more than one has been known to appoint itself keeper of a washing line. Strays of every kind, from the ordinary to the frankly improbable, find their way to the back door, especially in winter, and especially the ones the Void has touched: a fox with a frayed tail, a songbird that has forgotten its song, a creature no one can name because the story it came from is gone.

The KnitWitches mend them as they would mend anyone, asking each tear what it wants to be and working with the grain of it. Some stay a night. Some stay for generations. The RagPies, who covet any bright thread for their nests, are tolerated rather than welcomed, and every KnitWitch keeps a spare skein in her pocket for bribes.

The High KnitWitches

The Coven is led by the High KnitWitch, who holds its continuity in trust and settles the questions no single circle can. The office passes not by birth or by vote, but by the quiet agreement of the circles, and the Coven's records of it are kept in a long, patched shawl that hangs above the hearth, each High KnitWitch's years worked into it in her own stitch.

The shawl's earliest rows are too worn to read. The first High KnitWitch is remembered only as the First Stitch, and nothing more of her is certain. Of those who came after, the Coven speaks most often of:

  • Tilda TuckStitch - who first opened the hearth to the unwoven, and set the rule that no one who knocks is ever turned away.
  • Greta GrosGrain - who knitted the Coven's oldest wards, many of which still hold.
  • Bess BiasBind - High KnitWitch in the years before the LoomLight Festival, who is said to have seen the first frayed edge coming, and to have been ignored.
  • Noria NeedleNest - the present High KnitWitch. Grand Matriarch of Mend Magic, revered historian, and author of The Legacy of Bobbin Blench.

Who's Who in the Coven

The Coven is made up of close-knit circles, each a workshop, a family, and a ward (see KnitWitches for how circles work). Among the witches best known beyond its walls are:

Name Role
Noria NeedleNest High KnitWitch of the Clothborn Coven
Elda EverPurl Eldest of the Coven; keeper of Purl Power
Marl MendMarrow The finest living Mender
Bram BackStitch WeftWarden; keeper of the Coven's own wards
Wick WoolGather The Coven's foremost Seam-seer
Rosa RememberRight KnitWitch; known for her rare interview in The Common Thread
Pandora PinCushion KnitWitch; keeper of the saying "the world is not saved with one great stitch"

The Wanderers

Not every KnitWitch keeps a circle. Some, like Maud MendWell, are solitary witches who belong to no circle and answer to no hearth, turning up wherever the mending is needed most. The Coven neither claims nor disowns its wanderers. Noria NeedleNest is said only to believe that "some threads are meant to run loose", and there is always a chair by the fire if one of them should ever choose to come home.

The Coven and the World

  • The Eternal Loom - The Coven and the Loom are often spoken of as rivals, and they are not. The Loom weaves the world whole; the Coven walks behind it, needles out, catching what the great weaving lets fall.
  • The InkKeepers - Old and valued suppliers of dye and veil-cloth. An InkKeeper's delivery day is one of the few occasions on which the Coven's front door is ever properly busy.
  • The University of the Unseen - Home of KnitWitch Studies, taught by Professor Alfeus AllPatch. The Coven regards the subject with fond amusement, and has never once agreed to be interviewed for it.
  • The Keeping of History - KnitWitches are the continuity of Threadbare, and the Coven takes that charge to include the written record. Noria NeedleNest's account of Bobbin Blench is only the best known of the histories kept at the hearth. Many more are knitted rather than written, and can only be read by a witch.
