AudioSuite ▸ Pitch Shift ▸ Vari-Fi resamples the clip at a constant speed (docs/plugin-parity.md lists "varispeed effect" as a gap). The Vari-Fi chapter of Avid's Audio Plug-Ins Guide describes a speed ramp: Slow Down and Speed Up, "similar to a tape recorder or record turntable" slowing down to or speeding up from "a complete stop"; Fit To, which processes two thirds of the selection so the result keeps its length; Extend, which renders 150 % of the selection from the same start; and Fades On or Off: https://web.archive.org/web/20260809112153/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Audio_Plug-Ins_Guide_2023.9.pdf (Chapter 29).

This changes what the Vari-Fi menu item does: it now opens the speed ramp instead of the constant-speed Speed slider. The varispeed process stays available to audiosuite.process.

  • offline::vari_fi: reads the audio with the speed at 1 - u² for Slow Down and 1 - (1 - u)² for Speed Up, where u runs from 0 to 1 over the result. Both curves average 2/3 of normal speed, which gives the guide's two thirds and 150 %. Fit To plays the first two thirds for Speed Up and the last two thirds for Slow Down, as the guide's Extend section implies. With fades, the gain follows the speed. At either end of the input, the interpolation reads the first or last sample, so the level holds at the stop with Fades Off.
  • audiosuite.process: the new vari_fi process takes change (0 Slow Down, 1 Speed Up), selection (0 Fit To, 1 Extend) and fades (1 On, 0 Off). A clip whose result would not fit in one offline render is refused, as the other AudioSuite processes refuse it.
  • AudioSuite window: Change, Selection and Fades rows of radio buttons. The defaults are Slow Down, Fit To and Fades On.
  • docs/plugin-parity.md and ROADMAP.md describe it.

The guide does not give the speed curve, the fade shape or the defaults; those are SoundCraft's own.

New tests, each failing on main:

  • vari_fi_fit_to_keeps_the_length_and_plays_two_thirds (dsp): checks the read position along the ramp, normal speed at one end and a near stop at the other.
  • vari_fi_extend_plays_everything_over_150_percent (dsp): the length, the read positions, and the same positions on both channels.
  • vari_fi_fades_follow_the_speed (dsp): the fade-out and fade-in gains, and the level with Fades Off, also at the stop at either end of the input.
  • vari_fi_pitch_falls_as_the_tape_slows (dsp): a 1 kHz sine keeps its pitch at the start and plays at three quarters of it halfway through.
  • vari_fi_handles_empty_and_uneven_channels (dsp): empty input and channels of different lengths; a shorter channel is silent past its end.
  • vari_fi_ramps_the_speed_and_extend_lengthens_the_clip (engine): the clip keeps its start, Fit To keeps its length and Extend makes it 150 % long.
  • vari_fi_refuses_mono_clips_longer_than_one_render (engine): Fit To and Extend refuse a mono clip whose result is longer than one offline render.
  • vari_fi_menu_opens_the_speed_ramp_and_its_choices_reach_the_engine (ui-egui): the menu item opens vari_fi, the window's defaults match the engine's, and each choice changes the render.

offline_survives_random_args also calls vari_fi.

Checks:

  • cargo test -p soundcraft-dsp: 38 + 63 tests passed
  • cargo clippy -p soundcraft-dsp --all-targets -- -D warnings: no warnings
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask layers: ok

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, at 3e56738 on top of main at aa74bff, merged with #998, #1017 and #1018 for failures that also occur on main on Windows:

  • cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,278 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at aa74bff. With #1013 (Auto Pan), the code merges cleanly, and ROADMAP.md and docs/plugin-parity.md conflict because each pull request changes the same header line and adds a row at the top of the same progress log and revision tables.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Vari-Fi speed ramps that slow a clip to a stop or speed it up from one.
    • Choose to fit the effect to the clip’s original length or extend the clip to 150% of its length.
    • Fades can be turned on or off. By default, Vari-Fi slows down, fits the original length, and applies fades.
    • Vari-Fi is available in the AudioSuite menu under Pitch Shift.

AudioSuite > Pitch Shift > Vari-Fi resampled the clip at a constant
speed. It now ramps the speed between normal and a complete stop, so
the pitch falls or rises with it. Slow Down and Speed Up set the
direction. Fit To keeps the clip's length and plays two thirds of it;
Extend plays all of it and makes the clip 150 % long. Fades On fades
the audio out with the slowdown or in with the speedup.

The ramp is offline::vari_fi, run by audiosuite.process as vari_fi
with change, selection and fades params. The constant-speed varispeed
process stays available to commands.

Walkthrough

The change adds a DSP processor for Vari-Fi speed ramps and exposes it through the AudioSuite command and UI. It supports slowdown or speedup, Fit To or Extend selection, and optional fades. Tests cover processing behavior, command limits, and UI options.

Changes: Vari-Fi AudioSuite processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
DSP processor and ramp behavior
crates/dsp/src/offline.rs, crates/dsp/tests/it/*
Adds Vari-Fi direction and selection types and a processor that samples audio along a speed ramp. Tests cover ramp positions, output lengths, fades, pitch, channel alignment, and edge cases.
AudioSuite command integration
crates/engine/src/cmd/audiosuite.rs, crates/engine/tests/it/long_renders.rs
Adds Vari-Fi parameter parsing and dispatch. Extend mode uses a 1.5× factor for the input-length limit. Tests cover command output and refusal of oversized clips.
UI and feature records
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, ROADMAP.md, docs/plugin-parity.md

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3e567

The Vari-Fi change is mergeable after normal checks; no outstanding issue was established.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3e567

The new effect reuses existing clip-processing authority, render limits and undo behavior. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns how command access and interruption recovery are handled outside the inspected processing path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected processing path affects caller-addressable audio clips and generated sources within the current session, potentially across multiple tracks. This is existing AudioSuite mutation authority, not a newly introduced cross-session or cross-service capability. Host-level access to that authority was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled options select fixed DSP enum branches. Clip length is checked before rendering using both the existing channel-aware render limit and the effect's growth-aware limit. The new processor reads supplied audio buffers and returns new buffers; it introduces no file, network or credential operation in the inspected branch.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated commands or duplicate clip IDs can reprocess the same retained clip identity and allocate additional sources. This behavior predates the PR in the generic AudioSuite loop; no new retry guarantee or increased authority was established. Error rollback remains distinct from idempotency.

Merged main at aa74bff (02b1537). ROADMAP.md and docs/plugin-parity.md conflicted with the Ring Modulator and Float32 headroom entries: the header lines keep both changes, and the progress log and revision rows keep both. On Windows, merged with #998, #1017 and #1018, cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,278 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored. The branch merges cleanly with main.

Slow Down reads up to the end of the input as it stops, and Speed Up starts
reading from its first sample. The interpolation dropped the taps past
either end, so with Fades Off a Slow Down faded to silence at the stop and
a Speed Up started about 1.5% low. Those taps now read the first or last
sample; a channel shorter than the others stays silent past its end.
