On main, the Strip Silence window has only a Strip button, and edit.strip_silence can only remove the silence. The reference guide's "Stripping Silence from Clips" section (Pro Tools Reference Guide 2020.12, Chapter 41, pages 925 to 927) also describes Extract, Rename and Separate buttons. This pull request adds two of them: "Extract Clears the audio and leaves the silent portions of the track" and "Separate Separates clips based on the boundaries detected by Strip Silence". Rename is not part of it. The guide: https://web.archive.org/web/20210805202452/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Pro_Tools_Reference_Guide_2020.12.pdf

  • Extract: removes the parts of the selection that hold audio, with their clip start and end pads, and keeps the silent parts.
  • Separate: separates the clips at the same points Strip does (the selection's edges and the edges of each part that holds audio) without removing any clip.
  • edit.strip_silence takes mode: strip (the default, unchanged), extract or separate. An unknown mode, or a mode that is not a string, is an error and leaves the track unchanged.
  • Enter on a focused Extract or Separate runs that button. Enter presses Strip only when neither was clicked.
  • The Minimum Strip Duration slider goes up to 4,000 ms, the range the guide gives. Before, it stopped at 2,000 ms.
  • ROADMAP.md gets a progress log line, a revision table row and a new header date.

New tests. On main the engine and integration tests that check Extract, Separate and the mode param fail, the dialog unit test does not compile (it calls the new strip_silence_action), and the two that check Strip pass:

  • strip_keeps_the_audio_and_removes_the_silence (engine): on a clip of tone, silence and tone, Strip keeps the two tones. It passes on main.
  • extract_keeps_the_silence_and_removes_the_audio (engine): Extract keeps only the second of silence.
  • separate_cuts_at_the_silence_and_removes_nothing (engine): Separate leaves three clips that cover the whole clip.
  • an_unknown_strip_mode_is_refused (engine): an unknown name, null, true and 1 are each refused.
  • strip_silence_buttons_send_strip_extract_and_separate (ui-egui): each button sends its mode, and on the demo's Kick track Strip and Extract keep opposite parts.
  • strip_silence_extract_keeps_what_strip_removes (ui-egui, through the app).
  • strip_silence_separate_cuts_the_clips_and_removes_nothing (ui-egui, through the app).
  • enter_on_a_focused_separate_separates_and_does_not_strip (ui-egui, through the app).
  • strip_silence_strip_removes_the_silence (ui-egui, through the app): the Strip button gives the command's result. It passes on main.

Checks, with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set for the tests:

  • cargo test -p soundcraft-engine --lib strip_tests: 6 passed
  • cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui --lib --test it strip_silence: 1 + 4 passed
  • cargo test -p soundcraft-engine -p soundcraft-ui-egui --lib: 282 + 131 passed, 0 failed
  • cargo clippy -p soundcraft-engine -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets --keep-going -- -D warnings -A unused-mut: no warnings (the allowed unused_mut at crates/engine/src/autosave.rs:189 is on main on Windows)
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask layers: ok

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on 1e9a0e9 (on top of main at aa74bff) with #1017 and #1018 merged in, and #998 merged without its crates/engine/src/io.rs and xtask/src/main.rs changes (they conflict with main), with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set:

  • cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,280 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at ee050db. With #1036 (Unloop dialog), #1030 (Clip Looping) or #1016 (Vari-Fi) merged first, only ROADMAP.md conflicts: each changes its header line and adds a line at the top of its progress log and of its revision table.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The Strip Silence dialog offers Strip, Extract, and Separate actions for processing audio around detected silence.
    • Separate divides audio at detected boundaries without removing audio; Strip and Extract retain opposite portions.
    • The minimum-duration setting can now be adjusted up to 4,000 ms.
    • Each action uses the dialog’s current threshold, minimum duration, and padding settings.

… without removing any

The Strip Silence window had only a Strip button. It now also has
Extract and Separate. Extract removes the parts of the selection that
hold audio and keeps the silent parts. Separate separates the clips at
the same points Strip does and does not remove any clip. Enter on a
focused Extract or Separate runs that button, and Enter presses Strip
only when neither was clicked.

edit.strip_silence takes a mode param: strip (the default), extract or
separate. An unknown mode is an error. The Minimum Strip Duration
slider now goes up to 4,000 ms.

Walkthrough

Strip Silence now supports Strip, Extract, and Separate modes through the engine command and UI dialog. The dialog’s minimum-duration slider maximum is 4,000 ms. Engine and UI tests cover mode behavior and dialog interactions.

Changes: Strip Silence modes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mode-aware silence processing
crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs
The command accepts an optional mode and defaults to Strip. The engine supports Strip, Extract, and Separate. Tests cover clip outcomes and invalid modes.
Dialog actions and validation
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/*, ROADMAP.md
The dialog provides three actions and sets the minimum-duration slider maximum to 4,000 ms. Tests cover dialog results, keyboard activation, and clip duration. The roadmap records the change and unchanged readiness estimates.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 1e9a0

Extract and Separate follow the inspected selection and keyboard behavior. No identified issue blocks merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 0ca49

The new actions operate through the existing editing command, retain its track and selection scope, and remain undoable. The reviewed changes do not introduce a new privilege boundary or materially expand security exposure.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed operation affects clips on tracks resolved by the existing command parameters within the current session. Its maximum edit scope is not limited to one track, but the new modes do not broaden the existing track-selection authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-supplied mode strings select among existing playlist-editing operations rather than becoming executable commands or resource identifiers. Unknown strings fail before session mutation, and the dialog supplies fixed recognized strings through the same command path.

Comment thread crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs Resolved
edit.strip_silence read a null, boolean or number mode as no mode and ran Strip. It now returns an error and leaves the track unchanged, as it does for an unknown mode name.
