Clip List: Auto Rename sets the names of the clips separated from a clip - #1054
Builds on #1044, which adds the Rename Selected Clips fields to Strip Silence; until #1044 and #1040 merge, this diff also shows their commits.
On main, a clip that editing separates keeps the name of the clip it came from, and the Clip List has no Auto Rename. The reference guide's "Auto-Naming Options" section (Pro Tools Reference Guide 2020.12, Chapter 17, page 318) says "You can specify the auto-naming options for a clip when new clips are created from it in the course of editing": select a clip in the Clips List, choose Auto Rename, and fill in Name, Starting Number, Number of Places ("the number of digits that occur before the auto numbers") and Suffix in the Rename Selected Clips dialog. The guide is at https://web.archive.org/web/20210805202452/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Pro_Tools_Reference_Guide_2020.12.pdf.
Auto Rename reuses #1044's StripNames, its name format (the name, that many zeros, the number, the suffix) and its param checks. The guide does not say what the digits before the number are. Here Number of Places puts that many zeros before the number, as Strip Silence's Zeros does.
The Clip List's right-click menu on a clip has Auto Rename…. It opens Rename Selected Clips, with Name, Starting Number, Number of Places and Suffix fields, for the selected clips (or for the clicked clip when it is not selected), filled in from the first clip's scheme. The clip.auto_rename command opens the same dialog from a menu-style invocation.
The guide does not say which piece of a cut is the new clip. Here the piece after the cut gets the new clip id and the next name, and the piece before it keeps its name. Cutting a clip set to SFX, 23, 1 and .Reel1 at its middle, then at a quarter and three quarters, names the pieces in time order: (old name), SFX024.Reel1, SFX023.Reel1, SFX025.Reel1.
The pieces carry the scheme. The guide does not say how the numbers of several clips relate. Here the pieces of every clip that got the scheme in one Auto Rename count up one number sequence. Separate (At Selection, On Grid, At Transients), Clear, Cut, Insert Silence and Strip Silence split clips through edit::separate_at (Strip Silence through edit::separate_at_if inside its range), and each of them names the pieces. The guide does not say how Strip Silence's own Rename fields and Auto Rename combine. Here, when Strip Silence's own Rename fields are set, they name the audio pieces that Strip Silence cuts inside its range. Those pieces take no Auto Rename name and do not count the Auto Rename number up, so a piece cut off past the range takes the next Auto Rename name. The guide does not say whether the pieces that Strip and Extract remove use numbers. Here only the pieces that Strip Silence keeps take Auto Rename names, in time order, so the kept pieces' numbers have no gaps.
clip.auto_rename takes clips (default: the Clip List's selected clips), name, number, zeros and suffix, with the limits and errors of edit.strip_silence. Without a name the clips get no scheme. It is one undo step.
Copies keep their scheme. Cut and Copy keep a copy of the schemes that the copied clips use. Each scheme carries an id. Paste, Repeat to Fill Selection and Merge MIDI use the session's scheme with the copied scheme's id, name, zeros and suffix when the session has one, and otherwise add the copied scheme under a new key, counting on from where it was when it was copied. A copy pasted after its clip's scheme changed, after an undo, or into another session keeps its names.
Saved sessions hold the schemes. Opening a session caps Number of Places at 9, shortens long names and drops schemes that no clip uses. Import Session Data brings the donor's schemes in under new keys, and clips placed from a clip group file get no scheme.
Enter on a focused Cancel closes the dialog without setting the scheme.
ROADMAP.md gets a progress log line and a revision table row, and its header names this change.
This pull request adds these tests. On #1044's head each of them fails or does not compile:
separating_an_auto_renamed_clip_names_each_new_piece (engine): the order above, and undo takes the number back.
strip_names_leave_the_auto_rename_sequence_unbroken (engine): Strip Silence with its own name on an auto-renamed clip; the piece past the range is Take1, not Take3.
only_the_pieces_strip_silence_keeps_take_auto_rename_numbers (engine): Strip and Extract without Strip Silence's own name; the kept pieces are Take1 and Take2, not Take2 and Take3 (Strip) or Take1 and Take3 (Extract).
a_pasted_copy_keeps_the_scheme_it_was_copied_with (engine): in the same session, and in another session.
imported_clips_carry_no_auto_rename_scheme (engine, clip group files).
ok_sets_the_names_of_the_clips_separated_from_it, the_dialog_opens_with_the_clips_scheme and enter_on_a_focused_cancel_sets_no_scheme (ui-egui, through the app).
Checks, with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set for the tests:
cargo clippy -p soundcraft-model -p soundcraft-engine -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets --keep-going -- -D warnings -A unused-mut: no warnings (the allowed unused_mut at crates/engine/src/autosave.rs:189 is on main on Windows)
cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask layers: ok
On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on top of main at ee050db with this branch (and so #1044 and #1040), #1017 and #1018 merged in, and #998 merged with its crates/engine/src/io.rs and xtask/src/main.rs changes left out (they conflict with main), with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set:
cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,312 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.
On 06f3062 (the scheme match on name, zeros and suffix) with #1017 and #1018 merged in, on Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,306 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.
git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at ee050db. With #1036, #1030 or #1016 merged first, only ROADMAP.md conflicts, as it does for #1044. #609 (reusable clip definitions) re-indents the Clip List panel, so crates/ui-egui/src/panels.rs conflicts with it.

New Features
Automatically name selected clips with a configurable name, starting number, zero-padding, and suffix. Names can continue across newly separated clips.
Strip Silence offers Strip, Extract, and Separate modes, with a separate dialog for naming generated clips.
Clip naming schemes are retained when copying clips and importing session data where available.
Open Auto Rename from a clip’s context menu.
Updates
The minimum duration setting for Strip Silence supports values up to 4,000 ms.
… without removing any
The Strip Silence window had only a Strip button. It now also has
Extract and Separate. Extract removes the parts of the selection that
hold audio and keeps the silent parts. Separate separates the clips at
the same points Strip does and does not remove any clip. Enter on a
focused Extract or Separate runs that button, and Enter presses Strip
only when neither was clicked.
edit.strip_silence takes a mode param: strip (the default), extract or
separate. An unknown mode is an error. The Minimum Strip Duration
slider now goes up to 4,000 ms.
edit.strip_silence read a null, boolean or number mode as no mode and ran Strip. It now returns an error and leaves the track unchanged, as it does for an unknown mode name.
The Strip Silence window has a Rename… button. It opens Rename Selected
Clips, where Name, Number, Zeros and Suffix set the names that Strip,
Extract and Separate give the clips they leave in the selection: the
name, that many zeros, a number counting up from Number, and the
suffix. SFX, 23, 1 and .Reel1 give SFX023.Reel1, SFX024.Reel1 and so
on. The app keeps the scheme for later uses of Strip Silence until
the app quits, or until Clear and then OK empty it. OK, Cancel and
Escape go back to Strip Silence with its slider values.
edit.strip_silence takes name, number, zeros and suffix. Numbering runs
on from one track to the next, and the result reports how many clips
were named. Without a name the clips keep their names. A name or suffix
that is not text, a number out of range, or a number, zeros or suffix
without a name is an error and leaves the tracks unchanged.
Clip List › Auto Rename… opens Rename Selected Clips for the selected
clips. Name, Starting Number, Number of Places and Suffix set the names
that editing gives the clips it separates from them: the name, as many
zeros as Number of Places, a number counting up from Starting Number,
and the suffix. The piece after each cut is the new clip and takes the
next name. The piece before it keeps its name. The clips separated from
one clip, and from every clip that got the scheme together, count up
one number sequence. The guide does not say how Strip Silence's own
Rename fields and Auto Rename combine. Here, when Strip Silence's own
Rename fields are set, they name the audio pieces it cuts inside its
range, and those pieces take no Auto Rename name and do not count the
Auto Rename number up. In Strip and Extract, only the pieces that Strip
Silence keeps take Auto Rename names, in time order, so their numbers
have no gaps.
clip.auto_rename takes clips, name, number, zeros and suffix, with the
same limits and errors as edit.strip_silence. Without a name the clips
get no scheme. Cut and Copy keep a copy of the copied clips' schemes,
and a paste uses the session's scheme with the same id or adds the
copy under a new key, so a pasted copy keeps its names after an undo
or in another session. Saved sessions hold the schemes, and opening a
session repairs them and drops the ones no clip uses. Import Session
Data brings them in under new keys. Clips placed from a clip group file
get no scheme.

Naming model and session storage crates/model/src/clip.rs, crates/model/src/session.rs, crates/model/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs
Clips reference Auto Rename schemes stored in sessions. Session sanitization and pruning process the schemes.
The engine assigns names during edits and through clip.auto_rename. Clipboard and session imports preserve or remap schemes. Clip-group imports clear scheme references. Tests cover command validation, numbering, undo, persistence, and transfer behavior.
Strip Silence modes and naming crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs
Strip Silence supports Strip, Extract, and Separate modes, separate padding values, and optional generated names. The command validates naming options and returns kept-clip and named-clip counts.
Dialogs and clip actions crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panels.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/*
The UI adds Auto Rename and Strip Silence naming dialogs, a 4,000 ms minimum-duration limit, naming previews, and a clip-row action. Integration tests cover naming, dialog transitions, keyboard actions, and Strip Silence results. Roadmap entries record the updates.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 06f30
No actionable merge-blocking issue remains; the reviewed Auto Rename paths are ready for normal merge checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 06f30
The change adds persistent naming behavior without an identified new privilege boundary. The inspected operations primarily affect clip metadata, but external caller authorization and some failure-recovery behavior remain incompletely established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A caller already able to execute engine commands gains the ability to configure naming across explicitly targeted clips in the current session, with effects inherited by later edits and transfers. The inspected change does not establish access to another caller's session, tenant, credentials, or service authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Explicit target parameters can override selection-based command enablement, but Auto Rename independently validates clip existence in the current session. Selection is therefore not an authorization boundary in this command contract; caller authorization must be established outside the inspected dispatch path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Keeping clip references and scheme counters in the same Session snapshot contains ordinary failed document edits and supports undo/redo recovery. This protection does not encompass all clipboard side effects.

A paste reused the scheme of the session it went into whenever the
copied scheme's id matched, so an unrelated scheme that had the same id
could rename the pasted clip and count its numbers on. A scheme is now
reused only when its name, zeros and suffix match as well; any other is
added under a new key.
