Mix: make Pre-Fader Metering meter before the fader - #1046
Options › Pre-Fader Metering was stored with the session, but every track meter still read post-fader.
With it on, track meters now read the pre-fader tap (after the inserts, before fader and VCA) that pre-fader sends already use. The strip keeps that copy whenever the option is on, and it goes through the same delay compensation as the post-fader signal, so the meter stays in step with what is heard. Mute doesn't silence the pre-fader tap (mute automation does, as for pre-fader sends). Master faders keep metering what they send out.
Known limits, documented in docs/control-protocol.md and docs/ui-parity.md: an aux input's pre-fader tap isn't delay-compensated (as its pre-fader sends already aren't), and turning the option on sizes each strip's pre-fader buffer and delay line in the audio callback that receives the change, as other document edits do.
Testing: cargo xtask ci green. Mix tests: pre-fader metering reads before the fader and stays in step with delay compensation; master faders keep metering post-fader with the option on.

Walkthrough
MixEngine now supports pre-fader metering for non-master strips. It captures a pre-fader signal when metering or a pre-fader send requires one. Tests cover delay compensation, mute behavior, stale delayed audio, and post-fader master meters. Documentation describes the setting and its behavior.

Summary
Setting and pre-fader capture crates/mix/src/lib.rs, crates/mix/src/strip.rs
MixEngine refreshes Session.edit.pre_fader_metering at each block. It prepares a pre-fader tap when metering is enabled or a send is pre-fader. It stops and clears the pre-fader delay line when no tap is needed.
Meter selection and validation crates/mix/src/lib.rs, crates/mix/src/tests.rs, docs/control-protocol.md, docs/ui-parity.md
Non-master strip meters use the pre-fader signal when enabled and its channel count matches the main buffer. Tests cover delay compensation, mute, stale delayed audio, and post-fader master metering. Documentation describes the option and its behavior.
Pre-fader state changes can replay stale audio or cause audible callback overruns, so the change is not ready to merge without addressing both paths.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 18b44
The change reuses existing audio routes and controls without granting new access or introducing an output destination. The remaining limitations concern local meter timing and work performed during playback, rather than a material security regression.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated change is confined to audio-buffer retention and meter values within the existing session rendering path. The option does not itself select a new output recipient: main and bus outputs remain governed by existing track routes and send targets.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing Options command remains the mutator of the session boolean, and MixEngine remains its rendering consumer. Inspection found no change to those authority relationships or to plugin ownership; the newly added latency-reporting plugin is a test fixture.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Delay storage remains owned by individual strips, removed tracks lose their strip state during synchronization, and explicit reset clears pre-fader delay history. The existing latency cap limits each delay length, but it is not an aggregate memory budget across all strips.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the head of the diff: Pre-Fader Metering meters before the fader. The mix block gets the option (pre_fader_metering, copied from the edit state) and the strip's meter is fed from the pre-fader tap (after the inserts, before the fader and the pan) when the option is on, and the function needs_pre_tap now also asks for the tap when the option is set. Pro Tools has Options › Pre-Fader Metering, and it does what this describes, so the oracle fits. The meter reads the pre-fader buffer, so the gain reduction display (strip.gr) must follow the same tap, or the meter and the reduction disagree. A test with a fader at -inf and the option on, which must still show a level, is the proof. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Known limits, documented: aux inputs' pre-fader tap is not delay-compensated (as for their
pre-fader sends already), and turning the option on sizes each strip's pre-fader buffer and
delay line in the audio callback that receives the change, as other document edits do.

Otherwise, with delay compensation on, the tap comes back with the old
audio: on the meter, and on a pre-fader send added later.

CodeRabbit's latest point was right about the stale audio, and that's fixed in the new commit. With delay compensation on, the pre-fader delay line kept its old samples when nothing was using it, so turning the option back on or adding a pre-fader send later could bring back old audio. main already has this when a pre-fader send is removed and added again. The line now drops its history once when the tap stops being used, and the_pre_fader_tap_comes_back_without_old_audio covers it through the meter.
That clear runs once on the audio thread when the option or send changes, and doesn't allocate. It covers the whole buffer, so its cost grows with the delay, up to about 2^20 samples per channel.
I've left the other part: on first enable the meter reads silence for the length of the delay, as any delay line does when it starts.

Avoid clearing all retained pre-fader delay buffers in one audio callback.
DelayLine::stop() fills every retained ring with zeroes. When pre-fader metering is disabled and no pre-fader send remains, this runs for each active strip. For 64 stereo tracks with a one-second delay at 48 kHz, the clear writes about 32 MiB. The supplied benchmark takes 20.96–76.19 ms for this workload, which exceeds the 1.33 ms budget for a 64-frame callback. Invalidate the delay history without clearing every buffer in one callback, or spread the clearing work across callbacks.

Clear retained history when the current delay is zero.
If delay compensation is disabled while the tap is active, set(0, ch) leaves the old samples in the ring. Disabling metering then skips this clear. Re-enabling compensation and the tap can replay those samples in a meter or pre-fader send. Track whether history needs clearing independently of len. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
