The meters get Pro Tools-style display preferences and a peak readout.

  • ui.meters (saved per machine, also on a meter's right-click menu): peak hold and clip indication each None / 3 s / Infinite, and a release rate (the existing 26 dB/s, or the IEC 60268-10 Type I and Type II PPM decay rates). Defaults: clip lights latch until cleared (as today); peak hold 3 s (was 2 s).
  • Clicking a meter resets its peak hold, clip light and readout (ui.meters.reset, by track id or name); Alt-click resets all. Track › Clear All Clip Indicators still clears only the clip lights.
  • Mix window strips (not VCA or folder strips) show the highest peak since the last reset next to the volume readout.
  • The clip light and readout watch every channel of a strip (StripMeter::peak_all), so a 5.1 strip clipping only on its LFE or surrounds now lights up; they used to see the first two channels only.
  • Ballistics, scale marks, segments and colour zones are named constants in one module (ui-egui/src/meters.rs) instead of spread across widgets, app and Mix window.

Surround strips show the clip light and readout for all channels but draw no peak hold line; each bar's hold isn't tracked per channel.

Testing: cargo xtask ci green. Unit tests for timed and infinite hold, clip indication, release rates, hostile (NaN/inf) readings, a clip on any channel, Clear All Clip Indicators, the defaults, the readout, the ui.meters commands, a surround strip's loudest channel, reset clearing the hold, and stopped meters repainting until they settle.

Also fixes stopped meters being fed twice per frame, which ran hold times and release at about double speed once the transport stopped, and multichannel bars falling about 5× too slowly after stop (they used stable_dt, which reads 1/60 s on delayed repaints). Neither fix has a unit test: the first needs a running player and the second a real frame clock. Both were checked in the running app.

Walkthrough

The change adds aggregate strip peaks and shared meter preferences, display state, commands, and reset interactions. Playback feeds live or silent readings into that state. Meter displays and documentation use the shared settings and behavior.

Changes: Shared Meter State and UI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track aggregate peaks
crates/mix/src/meter.rs, crates/mix/src/tests.rs, crates/playback/src/tests.rs
StripMeter tracks the maximum peak across channels. Copy, accumulation, measurement, and reset operations handle the new value. Tests cover surround peaks and meter snapshots.
Meter preferences and display state
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/meters.rs
The UI adds hold and release preferences, meter readings and targets, display updates, settling and reset logic, and tests for meter behavior and preferences.
Playback updates and meter controls
crates/ui-egui/src/app/..., crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/meters.rs
Playback feeds live readings or silent readings into meter state. Commands and pointer interactions update preferences or reset selected, main, or all meters.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 720b6

Clear All Clip Indicators may occasionally leave a clip light lit until it is cleared again. This is a bounded limitation to accept or address before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to fc32f

The inspected changes affect visual meter readings and saved display preferences, rather than audio processing or access to protected data. Programmatic operations can change or clear indicators across the application, but their effects remain bounded to presentation state.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The maximum effect established for the new operations is application-wide meter presentation: preferences affect all displays, while reset can clear one track, the main output, or every meter. The inspected handlers do not mutate audio, recordings, session content, identity, or resource permissions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The commands extend the existing programmatic UI-control surface. Their dispatch terminates in display-specific handlers; preference values are validated before assignment, and named or numeric track targets resolve against the current session. Existing ui.set already permits UI-state updates.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Meter publication retains pending peaks rather than blocking the audio callback on the UI lock. Stopped playback silences pending/shared readings, while session reset clears UI meter ownership. These existing mechanisms contain the new field within the established telemetry lifecycle.

Is this ready for review once #1045 lands?

Yes. It's a draft only because it's stacked on #1045. When #1045 lands I'll rebase onto main, check that CI is green, and mark it ready.

#1045 still has four CodeRabbit comments open, and I'm working through those now. #1049 (meter types) sits on top of this PR and #1046, so it'll follow the same way.

Reset peak_all when the channel count changes.

When StripMeter::accumulate receives a different channel count, it replaces peaks and peak but still maxes peak_all. A peak from a removed channel can therefore remain in the snapshot and drive the UI clip indicator or peak readout after the format change. Keep the maximum only when both measurements have the same layout.

Suggested fix

Do not treat a non-fresh meter snapshot as a new clipping event.

During live playback, playback.rs feeds the shared meter_snapshot on every frame. When no audio block is available, take_meter_snapshot keeps the previous readings. After ui.meters.reset or track.clear_clip_indicators clears clip, the next frame can therefore pass the earlier clipping value to feed, which sets clip again without new audio clipping.

The stale value can be reused for up to 16.7 ms in Mix or 50 ms elsewhere. If no fresh block arrives, it can be reused longer. With the default infinite clip hold, one replay can keep the indicator lit until another reset.

Return the snapshot freshness from take_meters and pass it to the shared feed path. Use non-fresh readings only for level decay and timing. Do not use them to update resettable peak hold, clip, or max_peak state.

Infinite, and a release rate (the original 26 dB/s, or the IEC 60268-10 Type I and Type II
peak programme meter decay rates). Clip lights still latch until cleared by default; peak hold
defaults to 3 seconds (it was 2). Clicking a meter resets its peak hold, clip light and peak
readout (ui.meters.reset, by track id or name); Alt-click resets every meter. Track > Clear All
Clip Indicators still clears only the clip lights. Mix window strips (not VCA or folder

The clip light and the peak readout now watch every channel of a strip (StripMeter::peak_all),
so a 5.1 strip clipping only on its LFE or surrounds lights up too; they used to see only the
first two channels.

The ballistics, scale marks, scale segments and colour zones are named constants in one module

…e drops the old peak_all

Playback feeds the latest snapshot every frame, so a cleared hold or clip
light came straight back from the reading taken before the reset. Blocks
rendered before the reset but not yet polled can still arrive.

Rebased onto main, and this is ready for review. Local cargo xtask ci is green with this PR and #1046 merged together.

Two CodeRabbit points were right, and both are fixed in the new commit:

  • A reset could come straight back: playback feeds the latest snapshot every frame, so the reading from before the reset set the clip light again. Reset and Clear All Clip Indicators now zero that reading too. I did this in the UI rather than passing a freshness flag through take_meters, because the flag wouldn't stop the case below either.
  • peak_all kept a peak from the old channel layout after a format change. It's now replaced along with the other peaks. a_surround_strip_reports_its_loudest_channel_for_the_clip_light folded in an empty meter, which now counts as a format change, so it uses a quiet block with the same channel count instead.

One limit remains: a block rendered just before the reset but not yet polled can still arrive afterwards, up to about 50 ms later outside the Mix window. Simply draining them would also drop peaks on meters that weren't reset, so I've left it.

This conflicts with #1046 in the tests and docs. Whichever lands second, I'll rebase.
