Strip Silence: rectangles show what Strip keeps while the window is open - #1055
Builds on #1044, which builds on #1040; until both merge, this diff also shows their commits.
On main, the Strip Silence window shows nothing in the Edit window while its sliders move, so the only way to see what Strip would keep is to run it. The reference guide (Pro Tools Reference Guide 2020.12, Chapter 41, pages 926 and 927) says to "adjust the settings for Strip Threshold and Minimum Strip Duration (Min Strip) until Strip Silence rectangles appear in the selection", and "Once the Strip Silence rectangles encompass the audio that you want to keep, press the Strip button". It adds that "Adjusting these controls causes rectangles to temporarily appear in the selection", and that Clip Start Pad and Clip End Pad "retain material before and after the new clips" (page 926, step 5). The guide is at https://web.archive.org/web/20210805202452/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Pro_Tools_Reference_Guide_2020.12.pdf.
While Strip Silence is open, the Edit window draws a rectangle around each range that Strip would keep on the selected tracks inside the selection: the audio above the threshold, padded by the two pads. The rectangles stay while Rename Selected Clips is open and are removed when the window closes.
The rectangles follow the four sliders. The scan runs again when a value or the session changes. Outside the web build it runs on a worker thread, one scan at a time, and the rectangles last found stay until it ends. A scan for older values, or one still running after the window closes, stops before its next window of audio. The audio and the clips do not change.
The new query command edit.strip_silence_preview returns the same ranges for each track. It reads threshold_db, min_length_ms, pad_before_ms and pad_after_ms with the defaults and limits of edit.strip_silence, and both use the same scan.
ROADMAP.md gets a progress log line and a revision table row, and its header names this change.
The new tests fail or do not compile on #1044's head:
the_rectangles_are_what_strip_keeps_and_change_nothing (engine): the preview leaves the session as it was, and its two padded ranges are the clips Strip then leaves.
the_rectangles_follow_the_threshold (engine): a threshold above the tone finds no range, and one below it finds two.
a_stopped_scan_ends_with_an_error (engine).
strip_silence_draws_rectangles_around_what_strip_keeps (ui-egui, through the app): opening Strip Silence on the Kick track draws rectangles for the preview's ranges and adds no undo step.
the_rectangles_follow_the_sliders (ui-egui, through the app): at 0 dB no rectangle is drawn, and at -48 dB they come back.
the_rectangles_stay_while_rename_is_open_and_go_when_the_window_closes (ui-egui, through the app).
Checks, with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set for the tests:
cargo test -p soundcraft-engine --lib strip_tests: 15 passed
cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui --lib --test it strip_silence: 2 + 13 passed
cargo clippy -p soundcraft-engine -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets --keep-going -- -D warnings -A unused-mut: no warnings (the allowed unused_mut at crates/engine/src/autosave.rs:189 is on main on Windows)
cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask wasm: ok
On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on top of main at ee050db with #1044 and #1040, #1017 and #1018 merged in, and #998 merged without its crates/engine/src/io.rs and xtask/src/main.rs changes (they conflict with main), with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set:
cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,304 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.
git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at ee050db. With #1054 (Clip List Auto Rename, also on #1044) merged first, only ROADMAP.md conflicts; with ROADMAP.md taken from this branch, cargo check -p soundcraft-ui-egui -p soundcraft-engine --tests passes and the 13 strip_silence integration tests pass on the merge.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Strip Silence now offers Strip, Extract, and Separate modes: remove silent sections, keep only silence, or split clips at silence boundaries.
Preview detected ranges on tracks before applying changes; previews do not alter the session.
Rename resulting clips with a configurable naming scheme, which is retained for future use.
… without removing any
The Strip Silence window had only a Strip button. It now also has
Extract and Separate. Extract removes the parts of the selection that
hold audio and keeps the silent parts. Separate separates the clips at
the same points Strip does and does not remove any clip. Enter on a
focused Extract or Separate runs that button, and Enter presses Strip
only when neither was clicked.
edit.strip_silence takes a mode param: strip (the default), extract or
separate. An unknown mode is an error. The Minimum Strip Duration
slider now goes up to 4,000 ms.
edit.strip_silence read a null, boolean or number mode as no mode and ran Strip. It now returns an error and leaves the track unchanged, as it does for an unknown mode name.
The Strip Silence window has a Rename… button. It opens Rename Selected
Clips, where Name, Number, Zeros and Suffix set the names that Strip,
Extract and Separate give the clips they leave in the selection: the
name, that many zeros, a number counting up from Number, and the
suffix. SFX, 23, 1 and .Reel1 give SFX023.Reel1, SFX024.Reel1 and so
on. The app keeps the scheme for later uses of Strip Silence until
the app quits, or until Clear and then OK empty it. OK, Cancel and
Escape go back to Strip Silence with its slider values.
edit.strip_silence takes name, number, zeros and suffix. Numbering runs
on from one track to the next, and the result reports how many clips
were named. Without a name the clips keep their names. A name or suffix
that is not text, a number out of range, or a number, zeros or suffix
without a name is an error and leaves the tracks unchanged.
While the Strip Silence window is open, the Edit window draws a
rectangle around each range that Strip would keep on the selected
tracks: the audio above the threshold, padded by Clip Start Pad and
Clip End Pad. The rectangles follow the sliders and stay while Rename
Selected Clips is open. They are removed when the window closes. The
audio and the clips do not change.
The scan runs again when a value or the session changes. Outside the
web build it runs on a worker thread, one scan at a time, and the
rectangles last found stay until it ends. A scan for older values, or
one still running after the window closes, stops before its next
window of audio.
The new query command edit.strip_silence_preview returns the same
ranges for each track. It reads the threshold, minimum strip duration
and pads with the defaults and limits of edit.strip_silence, and both
use the same scan.
Strip Silence now supports Strip, Extract, and Separate modes, optional clip naming, and read-only range previews. The UI adds mode and rename actions, cached preview rectangles on track lanes, and tests for engine and UI behavior.

Summary
Engine modes, naming, and scans crates/engine/src/io.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs
The engine supports Strip, Extract, and Separate, validates optional naming parameters, and provides cancellable range scans. Tests cover modes, naming, scan results, and cancellation.
UI mode and naming actions crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/main.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/strip_silence_dialog.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/strip_silence_rename.rs, ROADMAP.md
The dialog offers all three modes and a rename flow. Accepted naming settings persist until cleared or the application quits. Tests cover mode actions, naming, cancellation, and keyboard input.
Preview scans and track rectangles crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/edit_window.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/strip_silence_rectangles.rs, ROADMAP.md
The UI caches preview ranges by session revision and parameter values, stops stale native scans, and draws ranges on track lanes. Tests check preview updates, visibility, and lack of session changes.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 746a8
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: stop unneeded scans when the dialog closes in Mix view, and move the new query into its required command module.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 746a8
The changes remain within the current audio session and preserve undo and failed-edit rollback. A preview scan can continue unnecessarily after the dialog closes while the Mix window is shown. No privilege expansion was established, although external access controls were not fully assessed.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: Preview cancellation is coupled to track rendering rather than the owning dialog's lifecycle. With separate Mix disabled, a scan started in Edit can continue after switching to Mix and closing Strip Silence: dialog closure removes the dialog, but preview state is reset only by the callback inside Edit-track rendering. The worker can therefore process remaining audio and retain its session snapshot until completion. This weakens background-work containment; it does not establish unauthorized session access or mutation. Drop-based cancellation and per-track scan limits constrain the impact.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Within the inspected flow, command-controlled effects are clip separation, removal, and naming in the current Engine session, plus returned track/range metadata and scan resource use. No additional tenant, environment, credential, or external-session selector was identified in the changed handlers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing JSON control handler and MCP execute tool accept command IDs and delegate through the shared command path. Those dispatch implementations are unchanged in the full comparison. The new preview therefore joins existing command authority; this observation does not establish transport authentication or network exposure.
observed — Preview construction clones the current session Arc, while edits use Arc::make_mut. This preserves snapshot isolation between background reads and subsequent session edits. Naming strings are assigned to clip metadata in the inspected naming path, not interpreted there as filesystem paths or executable commands.
