Plugins: parameter sliders move a tenth as far while Ctrl or Command is held - #1059
Builds on #1056; until it merges, this diff also shows its commits.
On main, a drag on a plugin parameter slider always moves the value as far as the pointer. The reference guide (Pro Tools Reference Guide 2020.12, Chapter 51, "Editing Plug-In Parameters Using a Mouse", page 1126) says: "For finer adjustments, Command-drag (Mac) or Control-drag (Windows) the control." Chapter 3's shortcut table (page 26) gives "Fine adjustment of sliders, knobs, and breakpoints" as "Hold Command while clicking the item" (Mac) and "Hold Control while clicking the item" (Windows). The guide is at https://web.archive.org/web/20210805202452/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Pro_Tools_Reference_Guide_2020.12.pdf.
While Ctrl (Command on a Mac) is held, a drag on a parameter slider moves the value a tenth as far, as the Strip Silence sliders do in Strip Silence: the sliders move a tenth as far while Ctrl or Command is held #1056. This covers the plugin window (inserts and built-in instruments, crates/ui-egui/src/panels/plugins.rs), the Clip Effects window's EQ and Dynamics sliders (panels/windows.rs) and an AudioSuite plugin's sliders (dialogs/audiosuite.rs), including Normalize, Time Shift and Pitch Shift.
A logarithmic slider, such as an EQ frequency or a compressor's Attack, moves a tenth as far along the slider. A whole-number slider, such as the Sampler's Root Note, stays on whole numbers during the drag.
widgets::FineSlider is a new builder with the options these sliders use (no value box, logarithmic, whole numbers, a salt for sliders without a label); widgets::fine_slider keeps its signature and calls it. Apart from whole-number sliders, a slider without a value box does not round the value. A drag without the key works as before.
ROADMAP.md gets a progress log line and a revision table row, and its header names this change. docs/ui-parity.md's fine adjust row names the plugin sliders, with a revision row.
The fix for Enter on a focused Cancel or Don't Save that this branch carried before (92a5ce9, 245523a) is now part of #1243, together with its tests, and 052d857 removes it from this branch.
All but the low-end test fail on #1056's head (the plain egui::Slider lines). The low-end test fails when the value is rounded to the places of a value box:
plugin_window_sliders_move_a_tenth_as_far_with_ctrl_held: on the EQ 7-Band window's Input (linear) and HPF Freq (logarithmic) sliders, a 30-point Ctrl-drag moves 0.08 to 0.12 times as far along the slider as a plain one.
a_small_ctrl_drag_at_the_low_end_of_a_log_slider_moves_the_value: a one-point Ctrl-drag from the compressor's lowest Attack (0.01 ms) moves the value.
whole_number_instrument_sliders_move_a_tenth_as_far_and_stay_whole: on the Sampler's Root Note, the same ratio is 0.06 to 0.14, and the value is a whole number at every step.
clip_effects_sliders_move_a_tenth_as_far_with_ctrl_held: the same on the Clip Effects window's Input and Threshold sliders (0.08 to 0.12).
audiosuite_parameter_sliders_move_a_tenth_as_far_with_ctrl_held: the same on the AudioSuite Compressor's Threshold and Knee sliders (0.08 to 0.12).
Each 30-point drag also checks that releasing the button does not change the value.
Checks on Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0 and SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1, on 30ee5b5 (with main at db51dd1 merged in):
cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
cargo clippy -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings: no warnings
cargo check --workspace --tests: no errors
cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui: 412 passed, 0 failed
…is held
While Ctrl (Command on a Mac) is held, a drag on one of the four Strip
Silence sliders moves the value a tenth as far as the same drag
without the key, on the slider and on its value box. Pressing or
releasing the key during a drag leaves the value where it is, and the
drag goes on from there. Releasing the mouse button leaves the value
too. A drag without the key works as before.
The new widgets::fine_slider uses the modifier test and the tenth of
widgets::fader. Threshold and Clip Start Pad show one decimal place,
and a drag on the slider during which the key was held rounds the
value to the places the box shows.
…is held
While Ctrl (Command on a Mac) is held, a drag on a parameter slider in
the plugin window, the Clip Effects window or an AudioSuite plugin's
window moves the value a tenth as far as the same drag without the key,
as the Strip Silence sliders do. A logarithmic slider moves a tenth as
far along the slider, and a whole-number slider, such as the Sampler's
Root Note, stays on whole numbers. A drag without the key works as
before.
widgets::FineSlider is a new builder with the slider options these
windows use (no value box, logarithmic, whole numbers, a salt for
unlabeled sliders); widgets::fine_slider keeps its signature and calls
it.

Walkthrough
The UI adds reusable fine sliders and applies them to Strip Silence, plugin, Clip Effects, and AudioSuite controls. Dialog handling defers Bounce requests until cancellation handling completes. Integration tests cover slider interactions and keyboard activation of dialog buttons.
Changes: Fine Slider Controls
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Fine slider behavior crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs
Adds FineSlider and fine_slider with modifier-scaled rail dragging, linear or logarithmic mapping, integer mode, and value display options.
Uses fine sliders for Strip Silence, plugin, Clip Effects, and AudioSuite parameters. Existing ranges and update paths remain.
Slider tests and recorded behavior crates/ui-egui/tests/it/*, ROADMAP.md, docs/ui-parity.md
Integration tests check modified drag behavior, value display, and integer and logarithmic sliders. The roadmap and parity notes record fine-adjustment behavior.
Dialog Keyboard Actions
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Dialog action and Bounce handling crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs
Queues Bounce parameters until after cancellation handling. Escape or Cancel clears pending actions, save requests, and Bounce requests. Save is queued only when “Don't Save” has not set an action.
No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed changes.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 78109
The changes remain concentrated in desktop UI controls and dialog handling. Cancellation now takes precedence over queued work, while Bounce retains its existing admission and cleanup controls. No introduced security concern was identified in the inspected paths.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected exposure remains local UI interaction affecting session parameters and a user-selected Bounce output. The new widget does not introduce command-selection authority, and the deferred output request reaches the same engine entrypoint as before.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Cancellation now overrides simultaneous OK activation before side effects are dispatched. The focused-Cancel regression test asserts that Enter closes the dialog without creating a Bounce or output file. Downstream Bounce construction still checks write access for both destination and temporary output paths.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The unchanged engine job owns an Arc session snapshot and writes through temporary output. Completion finalizes the encoder before publishing output; dropping the job closes the encoder and attempts temporary-file removal. Deferring initiation does not bypass these existing failure-containment paths.

ROADMAP.md: the header, the progress log and the revision table keep
both the Strip Silence fine adjustment entry and main's entries.
widgets::fine_slider calls Ui::scope_id, which egui 0.37 uses in
place of the deprecated Ui::id, as storytold#1063 does elsewhere.
Enter on a focused button clicks it and also presses the dialog's OK.
In Strip Silence, Enter on Cancel closed the dialog and still stripped
the selected clips. Cancel and Escape now drop the command and the save
that OK asked for, in every dialog. In Unsaved Changes, Enter on a
focused Don't Save closes without saving instead of opening Save.
Merged #1056's head (9774947) and main (eec559f) in; ROADMAP.md keeps both sides. 92a5ce9 makes Enter on a focused Cancel close a dialog without running its OK (Strip Silence stripped the clips), and Enter on a focused Don't Save close without saving.
On Windows 11 with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set, cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps on 92a5ce9: 1,448 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored. git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at a44d1b8.
Merged main at e82c168 into this branch (f554274). main had moved the AudioSuite window to dialogs/audiosuite.rs and the plugin windows to panels/plugins.rs, so the fine slider changes now sit in those files. The branch merges cleanly with main at e82c168.
On the merged head, cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -D warnings, cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui -p soundcraft -p soundcraft-web (453 passed, 0 failed) and cargo xtask assets and layers pass. The full cargo xtask ci result in the body is from 92a5ce9; it is updated once this pull request's gate check passes. Integration pull request #1107 picks the new head up at its next refresh.
Enter on a focused Cancel also makes buttons return true for Bounce. The Bounce branch then calls crate::bounce::start directly inside the dialog closure, so the bounce starts before the Cancel block runs. The Cancel block clears action, save_first, and the save state. It does not affect a bounce that has already started, so a cancelled Bounce dialog can still write its output file.
Store the bounce parameters in a deferred variable, as action and save_first are stored. Start the bounce only after the Cancel check, and clear the variable when Cancel wins.
🐛 Suggested fix
Declare let mut bounce: Option<Value> = None; next to the action declaration, outside the dialog closure.

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs at line 433:
Defer the Bounce operation in the dialog flow: declare an optional
bounce-parameters variable alongside action, and have the Bounce branch store
its parameters instead of calling crate::bounce::start inside the closure. In
the Cancel handling block, clear the deferred parameters, then start the bounce
only after that check if parameters remain.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Apply fine adjustment to the remaining AudioSuite sliders.
Normalize, Time Shift, and Pitch Shift use the fallback sliders at Lines 29, 33, and 37. Ctrl or Command therefore does not reduce their drag distance. Use fine_slider for these controls too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Enter on a focused Cancel also pressed Bounce, which started the bounce
before the Cancel check ran. The bounce now starts after that check.
The Normalize, Time Shift and Pitch Shift sliders in the AudioSuite
window move a tenth as far while Ctrl or Command is held.
Merged main (3def438c) as 7810959. main moved the Strip Silence controls into strip_silence_form, so the four sliders now use fine_slider there. cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings and the fine, Strip Silence and Bounce tests in soundcraft-ui-egui (2 unit, 32 integration) pass on the merged head. The branch now merges cleanly.

The dialog changes for Enter on a focused Cancel or Don't Save, the
Bounce Mix change that started the bounce after the Cancel check, and
their tests in save_changes.rs, strip_silence_dialog.rs and bounce.rs
are removed from this branch. The fine adjustment on the sliders stays.
Merged main (b6f9f15) into the branch. The only conflict was the module list in crates/ui-egui/tests/it/main.rs, where both new test modules were kept. cargo check, clippy on the changed crate and its tests pass.
