Builds on #1059, which builds on #1056; until they merge, this diff also shows their commits. The branch includes main at 60087e0f46032118bf309ed9ea161a9b4a872713.

On main, an Alt-click on a plugin parameter does what a plain click does: on a slider it moves the value to the pointer, and on a choice list it opens the list. The reference guide (Pro Tools Reference Guide 2020.12, Chapter 51, "Editing Plug-In Parameters Using a Mouse", page 1126) says: "To return a control to its default value, Option-click (Mac) or Alt-click (Windows) the control." The guide is at https://web.archive.org/web/20210805202452/https://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/PT/Pro_Tools_Reference_Guide_2020.12.pdf.

  • An Alt-click (Option-click on a Mac) on a parameter sets the parameter's default value, as an Alt-click on a fader sets 0 dB (crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs). The guide documents the reset for the plugin window (inserts and built-in instruments, panels/plugins.rs). SoundCraft applies the same Alt-click to the Clip Effects window's EQ, Dynamics, and gain sliders (panels/windows.rs) and to an AudioSuite plugin's sliders (dialogs/audiosuite.rs), which use the same parameter sliders.
  • It works on the slider, on the slider's value box and on the plugin window's choice lists. The value box does not open for typing, and the choice list does not open.
  • In the plugin window and the Clip Effects window the reset runs the same command as a drag (mix.insert_param, mix.instrument_param or clip.effects_set), so one Undo brings the old value back.
  • While Alt is held, a drag on one of these sliders leaves the value where it is. On main an Alt-drag moves it as a plain drag does.
  • widgets::FineSlider has a new default_value option.
  • ROADMAP.md gets a progress log line and a revision table row, and its header names this change. docs/ui-parity.md's Plugin windows row names the Alt-click, with a revision row.

Each new test fails with part of the change taken out of this branch: without the Alt-click reset the three slider tests fail, without the hold the Alt-drag test fails, and without the choice handling the choice test fails.

  • alt_click_returns_a_plugin_window_slider_to_its_default_in_one_undo_step: EQ 7-Band's Input at 6 dB goes to 0 dB, with one undo step, and Undo brings 6 dB back.
  • alt_drag_leaves_a_plugin_window_slider_where_it_is: a 40-point Alt-drag leaves Input at 6 dB and adds no undo step.
  • alt_click_returns_a_plugin_window_choice_to_its_default_without_opening_the_list: HPF Slope goes from 24 dB/oct to 12 dB/oct, and the list stays closed.
  • alt_click_returns_clip_effects_sliders_and_value_boxes_to_their_defaults: on the Clip Effects window, Input's slider and Threshold's value box go to their defaults, with one undo step each, and the keyboard focus does not move to the value box.
  • alt_click_returns_audiosuite_parameter_sliders_to_their_defaults: the AudioSuite Compressor's Threshold goes back to -20 dB.

Merged with main at 8ca6939 (a64f8f2): main's Strip Silence refactor into strip_silence_form keeps the branch's fine_slider calls, checked with fmt, clippy on soundcraft-ui-egui and the branch's integration tests.

At 72d4d9d the Clip Effects EQ and Dynamics sliders follow each parameter's taper, so frequency, Q, ratio, attack and release use a logarithmic rail as in the plug-in window. Checked with cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo clippy -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui --test it -- plugin_default_reset plugin_fine_sliders strip_silence_sliders plugin_window (19 passed).

Validation at 8734559: cargo xtask ci completed all seven checks on Windows, with 1,459 reported test passes, zero failures, and one ignored test. The branch includes main at 1e6310f and #1142's send-menu allocation correction.

Normalize, Time Shift, and Pitch II support Alt/Option-click reset and Ctrl/Cmd fine adjustment with their existing ranges and defaults. Both new regressions failed before the correction and passed afterward. The Normalize dialog was inspected in an offscreen render. Clip Effects gain retains its reset to 0 dB and fine adjustment.

Earlier checks, with SOUNDCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_PLUGINS=1 set for the tests:

  • cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui --test it plugin_: 13 passed
  • cargo test -p soundcraft-ui-egui --lib --test it: 187 + 195 passed
  • cargo clippy -p soundcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings: exit 0, no lints
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask parity and cargo xtask wasm: ok

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, at 5f1335bf (main at 0197e27f merged in), with no other pull request merged in:

  • cargo xtask ci passes its 7 steps: 1,450 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.

The earlier git merge-tree check reported no conflicts with main at e14cea42.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Use Ctrl/Command-drag to make finer adjustments to plugin parameters, Clip Effects controls, and Strip Silence sliders. Supported value boxes also allow fine adjustment.
    • Alt/Option-click plugin parameters to restore their defaults, or Clip Effects gain to reset it to 0 dB.
    • Strip Silence sliders support fine adjustment; they do not gain a reset interaction in this update.

…is held

While Ctrl (Command on a Mac) is held, a drag on one of the four Strip
Silence sliders moves the value a tenth as far as the same drag
without the key, on the slider and on its value box. Pressing or
releasing the key during a drag leaves the value where it is, and the
drag goes on from there. Releasing the mouse button leaves the value
too. A drag without the key works as before.

The new widgets::fine_slider uses the modifier test and the tenth of
widgets::fader. Threshold and Clip Start Pad show one decimal place,
and a drag on the slider during which the key was held rounds the
value to the places the box shows.
…is held

While Ctrl (Command on a Mac) is held, a drag on a parameter slider in
the plugin window, the Clip Effects window or an AudioSuite plugin's
window moves the value a tenth as far as the same drag without the key,
as the Strip Silence sliders do. A logarithmic slider moves a tenth as
far along the slider, and a whole-number slider, such as the Sampler's
Root Note, stays on whole numbers. A drag without the key works as
before.

widgets::FineSlider is a new builder with the slider options these
windows use (no value box, logarithmic, whole numbers, a salt for
unlabeled sliders); widgets::fine_slider keeps its signature and calls
it.
An Alt-click (Option-click on a Mac) on a parameter in the plugin window,
the Clip Effects window or an AudioSuite plugin's window sets the
parameter's default value, as an Alt-click sets a fader to 0 dB. It works
on a slider, on a slider's value box and on a choice list. The click on a
value box does not open it for typing, and the click on a choice list does
not open the list. In the plugin window and the Clip Effects window the
reset runs the same command as a drag, so it is one undo step. While Alt
is held, a drag on one of these sliders leaves the value where it is.

widgets::FineSlider has a new default_value option for this.
ROADMAP.md keeps both sides' progress log lines and revision rows. For egui
0.37, FineSlider takes its id from Ui::scope_id, and the plugin slider tests
look up the plugin window and the AudioSuite parameters with Id::unique, as
main's own code does.
While Alt is held, a drag leaves the value where it is, and an Alt-click
on the value box does not open it for typing. An Alt-click on the rail
sets the default.

Walkthrough

The change adds a reusable slider widget with Ctrl/Command fine adjustment and optional Alt-click reset. Plugin, AudioSuite, Clip Effects, and Strip Silence controls adopt it. Integration tests and documentation cover these interactions. The send route menu now borrows the session bus list when filtering buses and choosing a name for a new bus.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review a64f8

Clip Effects logarithmic parameters have reduced adjustment precision, but the issue is localized and does not block normal use.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to a64f8

The shared controls preserve existing parameter ownership, validation, and undo behavior. The reviewed changes do not introduce a material security risk or expand access to session data.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected fanout expands shared presentation behavior rather than trust or privilege. Concrete consumers retain their existing session-update or processing paths, so the new interaction does not independently grant broader data access or plugin authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing engine handlers remain the parameter-validation and session-mutation boundary. They retain value validation or clamping; the shared widget does not replace those controls with UI-only enforcement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Transient drag state is pass-scoped and removed when dragging stops. Modifier changes re-anchor the gesture, while application-level cleanup ends command merging after pointer release, containing interrupted interaction state.

Explanation

The title "Plugins: Alt-click returns a parameter to its default value" matches the main change in the changeset. The PR objectives describe Alt/Option-click reset for plugin parameters, and the summaries show a new plugin_default_reset test module, FineSlider usage in the plugins panel, and reset defaults wired into the plugin slider controls. The title is short, specific, and states the primary behavior. It does not mention the fine-adjustment (Ctrl/Cmd one-tenth drag) work or the Clip Effects and Strip Silence changes, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Minor · Use FineSlider for the Clip Effects gain slider, or document the exception. · windows.rs:749

crates/ui-egui/src/windows.rs:749
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use FineSlider for the Clip Effects gain slider, or document the exception.

The gain slider at line 749 still uses egui::Slider. The EQ and Dynamics sliders in the same window use FineSlider, which provides Alt-click reset and Ctrl/Cmd fine drag. The gain slider therefore has neither behavior. The ROADMAP.md progress log says both behaviors apply to parameter sliders in the Clip Effects window and lists no exception for gain.

The gain value uses the default 0.0 dB, so FineSlider with .default_value(0.0) gives the same reset target as the other sliders.

Proposed change
-            ui.add(egui::Slider::new(&mut g, -36.0..=24.0).text("Clip effects gain (dB)"));
+            let mut wide = f64::from(g);
+            crate::widgets::FineSlider::new(&mut wide, -36.0..=24.0).text("Clip effects gain (dB)").default_value(0.0).show(ui);
+            g = wide as f32;

If the gain control should keep plain sliding, state that exception in ROADMAP.md and docs/ui-parity.md instead.

Cover one-step Undo for choice resets.

The choice test verifies the default value and popup state, but it does not verify that one Undo restores the previous selection. Add the same undo-step and restoration assertions used by the slider test.

Merged main (0197e27f) into the branch in 5f1335bf. The only conflict was in ROADMAP.md, where #1060's Auto Pan entry and this branch's entries were added at the same places; the merge keeps both. cargo xtask ci on Windows at 5f1335bf: 7 steps pass (fmt, clippy, test, doctest, assets, layers, wasm); 1,450 tests passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored in 52 test binaries. The branch also merges cleanly with main at e14cea42.

Clip Effects gain now resets to 0 dB with Alt/Option-click and supports Ctrl/Cmd fine adjustment. Reset creates one undo step, and undo restores the previous gain.

The branch includes main at 60087e0f46032118bf309ed9ea161a9b4a872713. Plugin and AudioSuite controls retain their default-reset behavior after the module moves.

The gain regressions reproduced both failures before the fix. All 14 relevant plugin UI tests passed afterward, including reset, undo, and fine dragging.

At 5b604a5884b8ef1ad0eae66eb4d278f5abdd4a1e, cargo xtask ci completed all seven checks on Windows: 1,456 tests passed, zero failed, and one was ignored. The Clip Effects gain screenshot was inspected.

Normalize, Time Shift, and Pitch II now use FineSlider with their existing ranges and defaults. The regression tests exercise Alt-click reset and Ctrl/Cmd fine dragging for all three controls. Before the fix, Normalize stayed at -24 dB after Alt-click instead of returning to -0.1 dB, and fine dragging moved as far as a normal drag. Both regression tests pass with the change.

Share the harness helpers between the two new test modules.

harness, hold, press, move_to and window_sliders are identical in plugin_default_reset.rs and plugin_fine_sliders.rs. Both modules are in the same it test binary. Move the helpers into one shared module, for example tests/it/common.rs, and declare it in main.rs. The two copies can then not drift apart when the harness setup or event timing changes.

Merged main at 8ca6939 (merge commit a64f8f2). The one conflict was in crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, where main moved the Strip Silence form into strip_silence_form. Kept main's layout and re-applied the branch's fine_slider calls inside that function. Checked with cargo fmt --check, clippy on soundcraft-ui-egui, and the branch's integration tests (plugin_default_reset, plugin_fine_sliders, strip_silence_sliders: 17 passed, 0 failed).

The EQ and Dynamics sliders in the Clip Effects window now follow the
parameter's taper, as the plug-in window does, so a frequency, Q, ratio,
